The Nanzenji Garden Ryokan was amazing, the best! A great location just along the Philosopher's Walk for cherry blossom viewing and easy access to two beautiful temples. Our room was fabulous, traditional Japanese but with a definitely updated ambiance. The private garden and variety of our sitting areas made it feel like a luxurious home-away-from-home. We enjoyed the wonderful soaking tub every day. The staff was excellent, helpful and friendly. I am telling all my friends there is no other place they should stay in Kyoto!

Staying in a Ryokan in Japan is a must. The Yachiyo Ryoken is a lovely, quiet family runned oasis. Yes, it might give some people the impression of being old fashioned BUT this is exactly what you want - getting the charm and spirit of how the old days and feeling like a Gaisha or Samurai.
If you don't, you are better off in a chain hotel.

We also had the traditional dinner and traditional Japanese breakfast where I discovered new foods - amazing! They really look after you and introduce you into Japanese traditions and culture and will help you if you don't know how to wear a Kimono or the way to eat your food. Everything is absolutely clean and perfectly arranged.

Last but not least, it was heartwarming when the owner sang a Japanese song about Switzerland (I'm Swiss) I wished I would know the name of this song to be able to look it up.

We would definitely come back :)

The front desk clerk manager and night shift manager went out of their way for us when we got in at 11 pm. The chef gave us wonderful stories and details about the entrees and pottery, and our rooms were absolutely immaculate. The baths in our rooms were so nice we didn’t even need the usual “onsen”. Thank them all for us!! Marie, Scott and Ellie Rooms 307 and 310 from 11/11 to 11/13 ps Nearby temples were incredible hidden gems. and an 800 yen taxi to and from our main station, or a single bus 3
min away takes you directly to Arashiyama.

My expectations were high given the (mainly) high ratings given by other reviewers. However, I was sorely disappointed. The room was run down with old and mismatched furniture. My room had a private bathroom with a tub that had a piece of wood wedged on one corner to prevent it from rocking (although it still did). The sliding doors didn’t slide but wobbled. In the morning, there were piles of used sheets in the corridor and cleaning items left on the chair outside the room - giving a real messy feel to the whole place. As I had a road facing room, traffic noise could be heard throughout the night (although Kyoto is a quiet town and this is in a fairly quiet part of town, the ryokan is along a mid size road with moderate amount of traffic going by).
The staff were nice but nothing else about the place really justifies the high price charged for the room. Honestly, I’ve stayed in hostels that provided a much higher level of personalised service and guest experience compared to this.

Don’t go here. Much better places for the price. We paid over $500 and got the oldest room without garden view with the thinnest futon mattress. Food is good as is a restaurant however everything else is poor. The water filter needs to be changed in the “bath” area as it tastes like mold. Bathroom is straight from 1970s, closet door hinges broken, wall paper dirty and patched up. Dusty and we had terrible allergies after. The manager said “no one else in your floor is complaining” (I speak Japanese and complained that the website pictures are deceptive) most staff are nice. Upset by false advertising and poor room.

Terrible, please do not go to this ryokan as there are many better options. We chose the biggest room, with the amount paid, you can easily find a good quality room at other hotels. Things were not maintained well and are old. Really think hotels shouldn’t market as “traditional” and get away with upkeeeping of the residence. There was mould. We could hear noise (from other rooms?). Staff were not very welcoming, did bare minimum. Place doesn’t feel clean.

Our stay at Hotel Kyoto Nanzenji Ryokan Yachiyo was a serene escape into traditional Japanese hospitality.

For dinner, we opted for the Kaiseki lunch box, which was an amazing culinary experience.

The ryokan's attention to detail was evident in every aspect of our stay, from the comfortable yukatas to the tranquil cedar tub baths. The ryokan provided not just accommodation but an authentic cultural experience, making our Kyoto visit truly unforgettable.

A highlight of our trip to Japan. Highly recommended for those seeking a blend of tradition, comfort, and culinary exploration.

This beautiful Ryokan was our best choice on our trip in Japan. It’s located a few steps from Nanzenji Temple.
And around 10 minutes walk to a subway station. But it’s nice to take a bike and go for a bike tour around the city, and it’s offered for free.
We had a room with garden view and loved it. Every is incredible friendly and has a family feeling. The Japanese Breakfast was fantastic and we still miss that. For sure one fine day we wanna go back there.

Unfortunately, the room we were given (which I later learned was in the old part) did not look like the ones in the photos. It was large, which was great, but very outdated. The bathroom in particular was cheaply constructed and awkward to use. The host asked if I wanted to book the onsen but there were no instructions as to how to use it, where towels were (there were none), etiquette, etc. I ended up skipping it. The general parts of the ryokan, except for the restaurant and garden, really need some updating. All that being said, the staff were nice, the garden was very pretty, the neighborhood is lovely, and the restaurant served a wonderful dinner. I suppose I just expected more for $300 a night.

Tokyo, Japan32 contributions2 helpful votes
Thank you. FUSHIMI INARI It is about 35 minutes by train. From the Kyoto Garden ryokan YACHIYO, take the Kyoto TOZAISEN subway line traveling to TENJINGAWAUZUMASA. At the SANJYOKEIHAN Sta, change the train to the KEIHAN Line traveling to . Get off at Fushimi inari Station. If you walk straight, along the Niomon Dori Street for 5 minutes, you will see the Yachiyo Ryokan on the right side. The entrance of the Ryokan is on the approach lane (Sando) that leads to Nanzenji Temple. NISHIKI MARKET It is about 20 minutes by train. From the Kyoto Garden ryokan YACHIYO, take the Kyoto TOZAISEN subway line traveling to TENJINGAWAUZUMASA. If you walk straight, along the NKawaramachi Street for 15 minutes. Welcome to Kyoto Garden Ryokan Yachiyo GET THE BEST OUT OF A RYOKAN Kyoto, once prospering as the nation's capital for over 1,200 years is the city of arts, tradition and history. Kyoto plays a significant role in the identity of Japanese people. Experience this authentic part of Japan in a Ryokan. Why do Japanese people feel most comfortable on Tatami floors? Why do Japanese people from outside Kyoto praise Japanese food in Kyoto? Why is it difficult for Japanese people on vacation to decide whether to stay in a hotel or a Ryokan when they come to Kyoto? Kyoto is the city where Japanese people can reassure their ethnicity and remember the most important things about being Japanese. In a Ryokan, get more out of the basic necessities in life; food, shelter and clothing. An experience different from the common hotel. A Ryokan is an accommodation facility original to the owners taste, influenced by Japanese culture, style and feel. A service that can't be found anywhere else in the world. Only here in Japan. Don't miss the opportunity to experience a deeper Japan.

Hi there Can a standard room accommodate 3 guests? And is the standard room a traditional ryokan room? Thanks S
Answer from Hans christian R
Singapore, Singapore1 contribution
The standard room we had could easily fit two adults and two small children. One child in a babycot(which we brought) and the other one on the two mattresses with us. If the third person is an adult you can ask for an extra mattress, there is room for it but I don't know if they will alow it. Have a great trip!
