My wife and I took a 10 day tour of Japan, staying 2 nights in this very nice hotel. We walked to many historical temples, shrines, and incredible 3 block long food vendors street, as well as retail specialty shops. Room was excellent. Breakfast buffet was varied and excellent. We were given a teppanyaki dinner in the hotel which made...

Check in was super efficient as expected, room, surprising large, great bathroom. Bed was a dream, great night sleep. Many nice touches such as the Nespresso machine (pods replaced every day), well stocked amenities kits in the bathroom, and good info in the room about what to do in the area. The best part is the service. Left some valuables...

Arrived here for 2 day stay. Room was on the 8th floor. We could only book a smoking room unfortunately but it was not to bad. Room was very large. Had a bath and shower. We also had a nespresso coffee maker. Room a little dated but clean and tidy. Loved the little origami animals. Breakfast buffet was good and...

We found most Japanese hotel rooms to be smaller than we have gotten used to in Europe and US, however the Nikko Princess rooms are more spacious than most. Rooms were spotlessly clean and staff was extremely helpful. The lobby is lovely but it's true that the rooms could use a face lift-perhaps new carpeting. However the beds were extremely...

This is the third time I stayed at Nikko Princess Kyoto. The location is amazing and the staff is attentive. And the bar is great. The woman bartender makes incredible cocktails! However, this time I have one minor complaint regarding the check in process. My family and I were scheduled to stay for four nights altogether with one night away...

Definitely the low point of our three week Japan trip The hotel feels tired and the decor stuck in the 80s. We expected more from a Nikko hotel. Definitely geared toward domestic travelers, as few of the staff spoke enough conversational English to be helpful in most matters. Their restaurant recommendation was abysmal and our one in-hotel meal was terrible....

Stayed here two nights as part of a group tour. On entering the original allocated room (808) it stank very strongly of cigarettes so I went back to front desk for a replacement. Was then allocated 1007 which was a very well sized twin room on a corner with duel aspect windows. Large bathroom with separate wet room including bath...

Pleasant hotel, but expensive food in restaurant and bar. Breakfast very busy with the cooked food cold 20 minute walk from the centre of Kyoto but also has lots of shops round the corner We had a bar meal as stuck for time one night which was horrendously expensive and they allow smoking so quite smelly.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
