We were part of a tour group that booked this hotel for 2 nights in Kyoto. The hotel has a nice lobby and a adjacent bar with a cascading waterfall that makes for pleasant respite--downside is that a beer from the min bar is $5.00 but at bar it is $9.00. The hotel is close to a subway station and...

Three metro stops away from the railway station and quietly located right in front of the Unesco World Heritage Site Nijo Castle is overlooking a park and the in the distance snow topped mountains. Hotel rooms are reasonably sized with all guest aminities in the bathrooms, minibar, safe, coffee and tea making facilities. The 'concierge' Simon (a New Zealander) speaks...

This hotel is situated next to Nijo Castle which is 10-15 minutes drive from Kyoto Central. The excellent regular Shuttle Bus service to Kyoto station means that you have easy access to downtown Kyoto. If you arrive at Kyoto station look for the information office as I doubt you will find the pickup point without some assistance. If you like...

The key annoying thing was smell of cigarettes even at non-smoking floor. Otherwise value for money hotel in good location. Not fresh but clean. We didn't indicate beforehand that we need a non-smoking room and by default the room was on a smoking floor. Took a while to solve this issue

Never stay in a place that misleads you. My husband and I chose the property for the pool but it didn't open until 1300 hours each day and the staff requested a cost of approx $10. each for one to swim in it. When I spoke to the NZ bell boy he indicated the pool was a separate entity yet...

The beds are hard, the pillows are lumpy and there is no air conditioning. It was warm when we were there, and the rooms were stifling at night. If you like tired and worn 80's decor you might like this place, but we did not. We found it depressing. The best thing about the hotel is the shuttle bus to/from...

ANA was our hotel for the second leg of our trip to Japan. Unbelievably wonderful staff! Everyone was extremely helpful, polite, and helpful. I visited the front desk at least twice a day everyday for 7days for recommendations and instructions on how to go to places of interest (I always felt that they were genuinely happy to help). Whenever we...

Our very first arrival at the hotel was warmly received by the Australian concierge Simon, who made us feel very welcome and taken care of. He showed us all the way up to our room and gave a quick explanation of the amenities in our room, which I thought was a very nice touch. The room was of a decent...

I'll never forget my stay in this hotel. Main selling point for this hotel were the staff. They're superb and go so far above and beyond. American hotels should use Japanese hotels as case studies. All the effort goes into performing to an extremely high standard, and choose to take pride in their work over and above tips. Limited communication...

Very friendly concierge (Simon from New Zealand), beautiful lobby, spacious room and bathroom, comfy bed, free wi-fi, and good location. Didn't try any of the restaurants because most of the 6-7 restaurants in the hotel only seem to have set menus and was pricy given that my friend was a vegetarian. Got a deal online so was definitely worth the...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

The ANA Hotel Kyoto looks almost out of place with its modern exterior nestled amongst the sublime beauty and historic grandeur of Japan s old capital. This however belies the traditional hospitality and classic atmosphere to be experienced within her four walls. ... more   less
