The Chapter is a great hotel in a central location in Kyoto. It has a boutique hotel feel that offers the benefits of being a Marriot Bonvoy property. Rooms are not big as is common in Japan, but in typical Japanese fashion they have maximized the space in the room so that it feels larger and yet cozy at the same time. The toilet and shower is separate, which is nice, and the bathroom and entrance area can be separated from the sleeping area with a traditional Japanese sliding door. Our room didn’t have a view (actually the window was frosted, and when opened just revealed the side of a building), but the hotel isn’t that the tall so I don’t think views are really why one should stay here. The hotel also has well-appointed gym, and a traditional Japanese bath. As I am a platinum bonvoy member we were given free breakfast which is served in the lobby restaurant. The lobby restaurant is open for lunch and also offers drinks in the evening (with Bonvoy platinum members and above getting free wine, beer, and sake), but the restaurant is not currently serving dinner. Staff was nice, although, mostly not from Japan which caused an issue with my invoice (long story short I am allowed a tax exemption and the first staff member I dealt with had no idea what I was talking about, and just shut me down, a manager rectified at check-out), but overall staff are friendly and accommodating. Overall, for the value and location – walking distance to a lot of restaurants – this is a great hotel to stay at when visiting Kyoto for any purpose.

The hotel opened in June 2021 and has a good location and stylish design but the overall experience was mixed. As a Marriott Tribute Portfolio property, it supposed to be a luxury hotel but the overall service level was not up to that standard. There was a large lounge/restaurant but it was empty all afternoon and evening so it did not feel welcoming. At check-in, the staff did little other than give me a key and didn't attempt to suggest how I could use the hotel facilities. The room was fairly small for a luxury property and what was advertised as a king bed was actually a queen. The entrance to the room was so small that it was impossible to enter and take off shoes as supposed to without stepping on to the wood floor designed for bare feet. The hotel is so close to the adjacent building that the window is covered with a Japanese paper screen to hide the view. The communal bath was nicely designed. There was only one choice for breakfast, which was a Kyoto-style "obanzai" set. The food was nicely prepared but the portion was small and the buffet only offered drinks. More choice would have been nice along with some food items in the buffet. Perhaps it will be better once pandemic restrictions ease but for the moment, it is not worth paying a premium to stay at this hotel.

Dear 917seths -sama, Greeting. I hope this note finds you well. Thank you very much for saying at our property. We regret to hear that your stay experience did not meet your expectation, especially for your check in experience. We did share your valuable comment to Front Office in charge and they are working together with me to seek how we can improve current service quality and make sure we satisfy for our valuable Marriott member like yours. As for breakfast selection, due to current sentiment, it was limited choice at this moment, nevertheless, we take your comment seriously and discuss with chef how we can improve our breakfast experience. Once again, thank you for your time to share your stay feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back in near future. Kind regards Satoshi Furuya General Manager HIYORI CHAPTER KYOTO, A Tribute Portfolio

Great location and hotel to get your zen back after Tokyo or Osaka.

The hotel is in a great location and easily accessible by public transportation from the bullet train. The main shopping area and restaurants are about a 15 minute walk. There are also sightseeing landmarks within a 30min walk.

The staff at check in were awesome and got some goodies upon arrival. They also upgraded my reservation and gave me options for a bigger room, but I decided on the larger room with a bigger bed. The happy hour for members is very limited from 5-630pm. They should really consider changing or extending the hours to 8pm. The staff stay behind the bar and don’t pick up plates so it would not be that big of a burden. The appetizers are very limited and I went there for the sake sampler.

The rooms are not big, but fine for a couple. The bathroom is also small, but I was surprised that they provided a 3 step facial cleanser and moisturizer… so nice!

There are no views, but the trade offs are worth it - the rooms completely blackout and the place is so quiet. I really booked the hotel for the public bath - beautifully designed for you to relax. I spent at least 2 hrs during a rainy day. So it’s a good alternative to bad weather or just a day for r&r.

I was not a big fan of the breakfast, but I’m biased with having an American breakfast. I should have taken the points, but it was fine. The staff at the restaurant and during happy hour are great. They were always happy to welcome you.

Overall, highly recommend and I would book again if I’m in town.

Located in a great part of Kyoto, walkable to the imperial palace as well as Gion, this property was extremely convenient for my exploring of Kyoto. The interior of the property is very sleek and modern looking.

The room is a traditional Japanese style room with a tatami mat. Decent size for Japan and the bed was super comfortable. Very clean — spotless, and I felt very relaxed.

The hot spring/public bath was very well kept and was a very nice addition to the overall feel of the hotel. Additionally, the late night ramen service was exactly what I needed after exploring all day. Breakfast was a bit overpriced but it was still good.

Service was top notch—I could really tell they wanted me to enjoy my stay here. This was a fantastic hotel and I’d come here again in a heartbeat.

We stayed for three nights at this comfortable hotel, which is centrally located for most of the sites. Most of the tourist sites can be accessed by local bus or train within easy walking distance of the local bus sto or station.

The hotel is a modern Tribute hotel and is in nice condition. The room was “compact” to say the least and we did not have an outside window. The rooms are aligned with traditional decor and of a minimalist layout. Although small, the room was functional, comfortable and adequate for a couple of nights. The bed linen was of a high quality and the thick bed topper provided a comfortable sleep. The shower/wet room, again, was of a compact nature, however the shower itself was excellent. The bathroom soap and creams were of a good quality.

The reception staff were friendly and offered a welcome drink on arrival.

A nice hotel for a short stay, if looking for a longer stay or a stay for business this property may not fit the bill.

Our family of 5 spent 4 nights at this lovely & fairly new hotel in Kyoto. The staff was helpful, especially maiko. Rooms were very clean yet on the small side, but comfortable. We had a superior king with shower; I was told all king rooms were in the center and the small window you couldn’t see through nor open. Our 3 sons stayed in a superior twin room with shower (with an added third bed). Their room was cramped inside, but it had windows that faced front of hotel. We had trouble with the air conditioning a couple of times, but eventually worked. The bathroom was nice; best shower I had in any of the hotels! The public bath/ onsen and women’s locker room was nice & relaxing especially after a long day of walking. Breakfast was nice but crowded, and we also had free udon at 9pm! The coin operated washer & dryer were also very handy (can get busy, so must be patient). We were about 8 minutes/several blocks away from the station, which was near the gion matsuri (festival) parade route! Walking distance to nishiki market and gion. We ended up taking bus which was easy and convenient. We also stayed at Hilton garden inn Kyoto which was also new and nice. Would stay at either place again, especially chapter!

Beautiful, clean, centrally located hotel. The rooms are appointed with Japanese pajamas, air purifier, aromatherapy room and pillow spritz. They provide “Tabi” or Japanese socks for you to keep. There’s a Japanese bath/spa, breakfast buffet (delicious), and the staff were very friendly, polite, and helpful. Don’t look further, this is where you should stay while in Kyoto:)

Great modern Marriott property on the quiet end of a busy shopping street in downtown Kyoto. The room was small but quite functional. However, the sliding screen door between the bathroom sink and the bedroom made it difficult for me to squeeze out of bed without bumping into the screen and waking my hubby.

We were lucky to get a top-floor room which was very quiet and had a nice view of the river. The onsite onsen was brand new and very popular at prime hour ( between 6 and 8 pm). There are several good restaurants in the area but they tend to close early.

The staff was helpful and pleasant. The bathroom amenities were great, although I lament the disappearing individual bottles to take home! The lobby is attractive. It would be nice if they offered a cold drink, a cup of sake,, or a small snack at the onsen as many places we visited in Japan did. A good Marriott Bonvoy redemption although I did not receive any special recognition or welcome.

This new modern hotel is in a great location to walk to Nishiki market and many shopping areas & is very close to public transportation. The rooms are tiny for three people and do not have any drawers to put clothes away and have a tiny open closet/ hanging space. The room we were in was very dark, with a frosted window that we believe looked out at a wall (we aren't sure because the glass was frosted). We knew it was day or night but couldn't see anything - this made it feel very confined.
I would only stay here again for the location but would be sure to request a view.

Room of stay: Hiyori dbl (integrated bathroom with bath tub), without breakfast

Pros:
The hotel is comfy and very new, room is clean, sized ok for affordable hotels in Japan and well decorated, and the public bath is nice to have after a whole day of sightseeing. The area is silent. Good for those looking for a more silent area for relaxation.

Cons:
Accessibility is not so good. The closest bus stop being the one next to the Okura Hotel. The other bus stops and the closest subway station are indeed a bit far away, at least 10 mins walk. i.e. the location is not so convenient if you have to go in and out of the hotel rather often, or hurry for your plans in early morning.

Also there's not much choice for food or groceries in the area. You may wish to walk to at least Shijo for that.
