Stayed for 3 nights in the Hinoki Suite. The location was great - close to the subway and easy walking distance to the cherry tree-lined canal, the river, the train, Pontocho, Gion, etc. It was very well equipped and we appreciated the washing machine and the bath. I wasn't a fan of the loft bed with it's steep stairs and...

We stayed 4 nights in early June in Bamboo and Ninja. The location was perfect. So close to subway station and bus stops. Grocery store Fresco is around the corner as well as Family Mart. Washing machine and soap in room is nice but takes way too long and still not dry enough, so we used the laundromat around the...

We stayed 1 week in the Bamboo Room here in Kyoto. wlaking distance to the Gion and everything including bus and subway close by. For 2 adults and 2 kids it was just right for us including cooking and laundry facilities. The room was comfortable and we really felt like we had our own space ,It was getting cooler when...

Caveat that this isn't terribly "authentic" and would fit in well with any boutique in the US (aside from the leave-your-shoes rule). But we still loved it. The price was right. Location was ideal for getting around Gion and the entire Higashiyama areas, and the subway was just around the corner. Was a little worried that it is on a...

We stayed for 4 nights in the White Crane machiya townhouse. It was perfect and exactly what we sought: a good place to relax after a long flight with our 2 young kids and acclimatize before exploring Kyoto. The people of Sakara were very helpful and friendly. I can definitely recommend anyone travelling with kids this hotel/townhouse!

We have just came back from a trip to Kyoto and stayed for 5 nights in Sakara. As a family of 10, we booked all of 4 rooms available, therefore we had the whole property to ourselves. It was good because the kids could be a little loud and we didn't disturb anyone else. We love walking around the area...

My family of 4 people (2 adults, 4yr old + 6 yr old) stayed for 4 nights in the bamboo room in January. The room was located on the ground floor, had two double beds, a separate toilet and bathroom, a kitchenette and washing machine/dryer. The room was a great size for the 4 of us. The location was fantastic...

We recently stayed in the Hinoki Suite for 6 nights, a summary follows for those with families. Our children aged 10 & 11 shared the loft bed and loved the novelty of sleeping above their parents! The suite was fully self contained and very useful for us to have a washing machine and kitchen facilities - although very small and...

We stayed in the Bamboo room, 2 adults + 1 Toddler. The room was perfect for us. Plenty of space (2 queen beds, kitchen, dining table, big bath and even a washing machine / dryer!) So clean and the staff are very welcoming. Perfect location in a little shopping mall with the subway station only meters away. Easy walk to...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
