This hotel is absolutely wonderful. The customer service is fantastic--the entire front desk staff stands up to greet you when you walk in the door. They provide a hot towel and cup of green tea while you are checking in. There is a lovely bar/coffee counter in the front as well. The room is impeccable and beautifully designed. It has...

Great location, 5 minutes walk from Kyoto station which makes it a good place to stay of you want to do day drips from Kyoto (like go to Nara). Nice decor, clean and well maintained. The hotel has a nice modern Japanese style. Rooms are relatively big but not very well planned. There was absolutely no wardrobe or closet so...

A great hotel with a super fusion of traditional Japanese and modern hotel. One of the best places we stayed in. The rooms are much larger than normal. If you have a nag for beauty, you will love it. Super clean and best staff I have seen in a while. Excellent English. Great location, 10 pedestrian min from the train...

My husband and I stayed for 3 nights in a deluxe room on the second floor. It certainly had a real wow factor when we entered the room and the bathroom and round cedar tub was truely beautiful, however there was no hanging space for our clothes. Only a small section of hanging space (jackets and shirts) but not long...

We stayed there for 2 nights for our wedding anniversary. We took a room which was very traditional looking with the wood (cedar) bathtub, tatami area, ... Really beautiful room with great comfort. The hotel is superbly located: not too close to Kyoto station but just one hop via the metro or even walking there. You have access to the...

Gorgeous. Modern. Stylish. Comfortable. Cool. If you want a hotel that has all the modern amenities, but is still steeped in tradition, stay here. Each room has a small area outside the door with a little Zen like garden and wood screened entrance that makes you feel like you’re staying in a small ryokan rather than a mid-size hotel. Upon...

For our 25th wedding anniversary we decided to visit Japan and chose the Kanra Kyoto based on TripAdvisor reports and the fact that the entire hotel is smoke free. When we arrived it was before checkin time but the checked us in and stores our luggage. We also discovered that it was in fact the first day of operations following...

Staff was extremely helpful and made several recommendations for sight seeing and dinner, all were excellent. Rooms were spotless with a touch of modern tradition. The breakfast was excellent, they served both Japanese and Weatern options. We will definitely go back.

We stayed here as a family of 2 adults and 3 children for 4 nights in September. This was our favourite place to stay in our trip. We all got to stay in one room which is near impossible for a family of 5 in many places in Japan. Our room was beautiful and clean. Loved the little details like...

Stayed for one night and found the deluxe room to be modern, spacious, clean and well appointed. The bed was massive and very comfortable. The hotel was about a 10-15 minute walk from Kyoto station which made it very convenient.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
