Located in a beautiful area in the middle of excellent gorge, with a great view of the purest river it is an excellent place to spent one, mostly two nights. Service and food are excellent, sleep quality is great, everything is near perfect. It's just that there is not much to do nearby and the hotel is not easily accessible...

This ryokan was wonderful. The staff were friendly and attentive, the room spectacular and the setting tranquil and scenic. It was a good place to stay for a few days, with easy access to the northern parts of Kyoto, but if you want a more central location, consider what we did, which was to stay at two different ryokans while...

Dear Christine M, Thank you for taking time to review our property. We truly appreciate your genuine compliments. As you said, the atmosphere here in Arashiyama is different from the one in the Centre of the city. The natural setting in Arashiyama has been favored by locals since a long time ago. There are seasonal events such as cormorant fishing...

I should blame myself of not looking into details before booking the hotel. I thought they have onsen, but it doesn't. We were quite disappointed due to this, but who can we blame. Other than that, the service and the scenery of the hotel is just stunning. If you choose to stay here, please do dine at their restaurant. We...

Dear Tsui K, Thank you for taking time to review our property and also thank you for choosing HOSHINOYA Kyoto from among a numbers of hotels in Kyoto. In the meantime we regret that we could not meet your expectation in regard to onsen, we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your recent stay here with us. We truly...

I think the Hoshinoya's greatest strength is also its weakness. As a hotel, it does wonderfully-- everything is beautiful, the staff are kind and helpful, and the scenery is stunning. However, the Hoshinoya's main selling point is that it's secluded; it's pretty much impossible to walk to the hotel on your own at night. You can take the boat during...

Dear DaisySRose, Thank you for taking time to review our property. Our hotel is situated in a protected heritage site and panoramic forest-lined scene could be enjoyed from our boat. We provide shuttle services for 24 hours upon requests and the path along with the river is suitable for a morning walk. As you mentioned, Arashiyama is becoming one of...

From the moment you arrive to the hotel area you feel pleased and relaxed, with the river ride to the hotel. Room view is to the river and a mountain with no construction across the river, and rooms are modern design of typical ryokan rooms with modern amenities. Area has a great bamboo forest and temple/gardens. Food in hotel has...

I really loved the serenity of this place and the tremendous staff service. Fantastic memories and hope you like these pics! I stayed for a period of 4 nights in a standard room. I also used some of the hotel activities such as the rickshaw ride and the kimono dressing which are highly recommended. Tended to eat outside but the...

If you're looking somewhere to stay for a couple of nights to get away from the city, somewhere with great views and relaxed atmosphere, this is it. Hoshinoya is what people say it is. It is a bit secluded, it does take some time to get into Kyoto, but it was a lovely place to have a break from our...

If you are looking to get away and enjoy a peaceful retreat, this is the place to stay. A boat takes you up the river to the property. The hotel is situated on a bank, overlooking the river. All of the staff were extremely friendly and very helpful. Dinner at the restaurant was exceptional. There are not many other options...

The worst part about the Hoshinoya is having to make your way to the pier to get the boat. However, once you are on their boat the manic nature of Saga Arashiyama town falls away into the background and you can enjoy the views and sounds of the river. The walk up to the rooms is beautifully designed and the...

We expected a good service and comfortable, relaxed stay as we experienced last year. But this time only available room was Tani living. As the name Tani, meaning valley or bottom of valley, implies, it was on the lower floor and has a shared entrance(Don't keep expensive shoes). When we were about to relax, we heard big noise from upstairs....

Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.
