We loved our stay at Hotel Mume. The beds were very comfortable, the breakfast was delicious (eggs, fruit, vegetable soup, coffee, bread... really beautiful spread), the location in Gion could not be beat, and the staff were exceptionally warm. They continually noticed little things (my husband and I asked for an extra egg the first morning, and from then on...

This beautiful boutique hotel is a hidden oasis in the Gion district of Kyoto. This hotel is very well located for shopping, restaurants, gardens and temples. What made our stay so unforgettable was the exceptional quality of service provided by all of Mume's staff. Through their helpful recommendations my husband and I ate a wonderful variety of meals in restaurants...

Until you have stayed here, you just won't understand how amazing, helpful, thoughtful and kind all the staff at Hotel Mume are. Mume is located in an excellent location in the beautiful Gion area. It was our first ever trip to Japan, and as soon as we arrived, I knew we were in for a very special 6 night stay....

We stayed at this hotel because of the great reviews on TA. All reviews were accurate. It is a lovely boutique hotel in a great location in the old part of Gion surrounded by great restaurants. Train stations are within easy walking distance. The thing that sets this hotel apart from anywhere we have stayed is the exceptional service from...

We spent 3 wonderful nights at this hotel. Not only is it well situated in the Gion district but the services and staff are fantastic. Before our arrival they made us dinner reservations for every night we were there, taking into considerations our requests. In addition, they offered us advice on each day's activities, and on several occasions, made the...

had an absolutely fantastic stay here. Staff were incredibly helpful (booking restaurants, printing off details of train times and how to get to our next hotel, all without being asked), the room was comfortable and clean, the breakfast was nice and varied and set us up nicely for a day of walking around the city. the location is great too,...

From the moment we arrived we were made to feel incredibly welcome by the staff who offered unbelievably attentive and friendly service throughout our stay of 2 nights. We stayed in the Moon Room which was perfect for a couple and we really enjoyed coming down and having a drink or two in the evening in the common area. The...

After a week staying in small business hotels in Tokyo and traditional ryokan, Hotel Mume felt like a luxurious retreat. We arrived at the red door looking weary bearing our backpacks. They were immediately taken to the room, and we were ushered into the lovely dining room for complimentary afternoon cocktails and snacks. Soon our room was ready, and we...

We were lucky enough to stay at Hotel Mume for 3 nights in January 2015 and as a previous reviewer stated when planning to visit Japan first book your accommodation at Mume and then plan your flights around it. By far the best service and experience of any hotel we have ever stayed at. From the warm welcome, amazing atmosphere,...

The staff were so friendly and genuine (beyond the usual Japanese politeness). We stayed in the flower room and it exceed our expectections. The room was beautifully furnished and showed Hisako's attention to detail. Happy hour is included in the cost and we were served Hisako's homemade Ume liquor, which was delicious. The included breakfast was fresh but was a...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
