We stayed one night at Ishihara in February 2017 and it was a really special experience. Hiroko made us feel so welcome. The ryokan is in a fantastic location with lots of lovely shops and restaurants to explore in the neighbourhood, but it is also a wonderful place to stay to cosy up and have a break from travelling. I...

I stayed three nights with my two teenagers. We were so well looked after. The Japanese breakfast was amazing - the dishes just kept coming and coming! I'm not sure I'd rush back for the pillows, but otherwise it was a lovely break from bland hotels. The kids enjoyed meeting the turtle. Hiroko very kindly did some laundry for us...

Our experience at Ishihara was truly enjoyable. Hiroko and her husband, Mr. Ishihara are both very kind and hospitable. Ishihara is a small Ryokan that is not advertised a lot, hence, it is more inconspicuous than the rest of the more well-known Ryokans. But that does not mean it is not on par with the rest. You will feel at...

Stay here: I was so sad to only stay two nights and wished we could have stayed a week. The breakfasts were divine and the hosts were amazing. Great location for exploring all of Kyoto. Such a sweet spot to stay. Hiroko was really kind and generous and guided us right in Kyoto. This is a traditional way of staying,...

We are lucky enough to have stayed with Hiroko-san for 2 nights in June, 2015. The Akiro Kurosawa room was available and we enjoyed a mini Japanese film history lesson from our hostess as well as amazing traditional breakfasts. The room is of traditional style: tatami mats, low tables and seat-backs. The ryokan is very nicely located walking distance from...

My husband and other family just got back from our trip to Japan. Ishihara was a highlight. Hiroko-san and her husband (I think) were so friendly and always there to see us off in the morning and welcome us home at night. We felt like family. She also helped us with our bad Japanese. He husband does paper craft as...

Our short overnight stay at the Ishihara Ryokan will live forever in our memory primarily due to Hiroko-san's hospitality that made us feel like friends rather than paying guests. The room is traditional, spacious and comfortable. It renders a warm feel of the old ways reliving how locals lived in luxury. We will be back for a longer stay at...

We've stayed in many ryokans. This one is on the small side. It's traditional with a home feel to the smallest details, not in a way that puts tradition on a podium. The senior couple who have seen Kurosawa enjoying their hospitality in the past is absolutely adorable and professional. The location of the ryokan is quiet, but neighbourhood has...

This was my first visit to Japan and this our first place to visit. I felt like part of the family rather than a hotel guest and loved it. Each evening when we returned from our sightseeing Hiroko would bring us tea and chat with us about our day and we would show our photos. Local restaurants were recommended and...

We loved our stay at Ishihara. Our hosts were so friendly, and hospitable. Was a little tricky to find at first but with the help of a local we found it tucked away. The courtyard garden is beautiful. It has a tortoise that is 48yrs old! The home cooked breakfast was amazing. So much effort and detail in every little...
