The Thousand Kyoto shines with a serene and stylish ambiance that celebrates modern Japanese aesthetics, as guests often highlight. Its spotless cleanliness, with rooms that gleam and a fresh-scented lobby, is consistently commended. While the staff's professionalism and courtesy are frequently lauded, some guests have noted occasional service inconsistencies and language barriers.
The hotel's modern, spacious rooms with cutting-edge amenities are popular, despite some breakfast and service glitches. Its prime location near Kyoto Station garners much appreciation, although opinions on value for money show some divergence.

Hotel's Favourite
Like other reviewers have mentioned, the hotel is absolutely stunning - modern and serene. Impeccably clean and comfortable rooms. I never wanted to leave the bathroom, hehe. The location is great - on a quiet street, yet steps away from the vibrant Kyoto Station and shopping malls and restaurants and Kyoto Tower. One evening we treated ourselves to a delicious multi-course set dinner at the Scalae Restaurant on the 2nd floor - a meal we'll always remember.
I'd like to add a paragraph about the hotel staff. Every person we met - from the front door to the front desk to the restaurant to room service to housekeeping - was kind and helpful. I especially want to thank Mr. Fujii for his warm welcome and great suggestions about places in the neighborhood - we looked forward to seeing him every day. And thanks to Ms. Padwani (sorry, I'm sure I misspelled her name) who took the time to help me organize a fun and doable itinerary for exploring the greater Kyoto area - my husband and I visited a number of fascinating places thanks to her!

The iPad in the room was your personal assistant. It controlled the lights and curtains. It had an room service / housekeeping feature so you could get refills for coffee, fresh towels. The entrance can be a little confusing the first time. KEEP LEFT. If you go right you'll end up in a neighbouring hotel where they will kindly escort you to the correct location.

This is a fabulous hotel conveniently located across the street from Kyoto station and nearby many eateries and shopping options within walking distance. The hotel is driven on sustainability where many of the items and small touch points, like many Japanese hotels, pay attention to the details. The key cards are made of reusable Japanese cypress wood, matching the decor and the actual sent within the hotel and in the bathroom amenities. The bottled water is in recyclable aluminum cans and not single use plastic.
Omotenashi at the Thousand is something to look forward to. Upon arriving at the hotel, they staff associates here help us get some reservations to some popular restaurants around town since we don’t speak Japanese. We were even able to get a reservation at a 1-star Michelin restaurant thanks to them. We also had a problem with the weather while we were here. It snowed in Kyoto, which from what I understand is not very common. And boy did it come down, the trains were cancelled and there was a mad scramble to get taxi’s. We were under to gun to make our Michelin star reservations without having to pay a 60% cancellation fee and the staff came through with getting us a taxi to get to our dinner. With the bad weather, they also provided us some umbrellas to use, which was a nice touch.
In terms of amenities here, the fitness center is top notch for a hotel gym. I went down a few times and the best part was it was completely empty and I had this pretty large facility all to myself. I also got my laundry done, a little pricey but if you put the order in before 10am, you’re guaranteed to get your laundry back by 7pm same day. The restaurants, I was only able to try Kizahashi and it was for their Japanese breakfast. If the rest of the food there was anything like their Japanese breakfast, you will not be disappointed.
My wife and I loved our stay here in the spacious rooms and would recommend your stay here, especially since the station is next door and you’re literally a hop skip and a jump away from places like Nishiki Market, the Gion district and many sight seeing locations like Arashiyama.

I really loved this hotel. The room was spacious and well-appointed but in no way cluttered, I had plenty of room to unpack and put my own stuff where I wanted it (without making the space feel cluttered), the room and hallways were very quiet, and the bed was extremely comfortable. During one of the days of my stay I was feeling unwell, and I basically lay around the room and slept most of the day. It was the most comforting and relaxing space I can imagine, and the next day I was fully refreshed and ready to resume my itinerary. The location of this hotel is ideal for a visit to Kyoto, especially if you want to use the subway, JR, and/or buses to get around the city or take day trips.
I was particularly happy with the service I received when I need to recover an item I left behind. Concierge Peiyun Chiang spent a lot of time communicating on the phone and by email about this, and front desk staff Ren Goto and Assistant Manager Tomoya Mori also helped out graciously and attentively.
I dearly hope that I can stay at The Thousand again in the future!

This hotel is undoubtedly the best in Kyoto. I am a frequent traveller to Japan, and I often stay for a while. Whilst I mainly stay in Tokyo (the Princes Gallery and Peninsula are unmissable) I always make a trip to Kyoto. I tried the Thousand for the first time in 2019 (winter). I chose a large room with a private terrace balcony.
Firstly, the whole aesthetic of those hotel is wonderful - very slim, modern and clean. True to Japanese style, it is a wonderful mix of futuristic/modern with traditional Japanese elements. The foyer has an amazing feature/artwork installed. The staff are excellent, welcoming and have excellent English skills (although they were happy to suffer my limited Japanese).
The room was spacious, airy and well lit. Very clean. The bathroom was also well stocked and luxurious. The shower and bath were particularly good.
I really recommend the private terrace rooms. There is a large private terrace with seating and it is nicely lit. The building is designed so that each balcony/outdoor area is extremely private.
The room comes with a tablet that controls all the lights and air conditioning.
The room service food was exceptional. I will probably always stay here in future when I visit Kyoto. I stayed for 5 days and it was far too short a visit.
すごい!和食は美味いと思います。僕の部屋は大きくてとても綺麗でした。一番ホテルに京都。(私の日本語は下手です!)

We stayed for 2 nights in late December, very comfortable room, well planned, luxurious bathroom with walk-in shower and deep bath. Very stylish and quiet reception/lobby area. The Bar and Tea Lounge is a very nice space with a floor to ceiling glass wall looking onto a Japanese garden. We enjoyed it for lunch and for after dinner drinks. The tea is expensive, but a lot of care goes into it, also, if you have afternoon tea, (a multi-layer feast) tea is included.
We thought the Hotel was well priced for Kyoto and for a hotel of this high standard.
The staff were friendly, attentive and efficient..
Great location, across the road from Kyoto Station.
Would definitely stay again...

We stayed for 5 nights in this property first impressions are excellent . Location is very central and initial greeting is very courteous and friendly.checkin and out is efficient but the language skills of some staff are very poor ,is the word “car park” too high a level for front hall staff to understand , a shrug of the shoulders doesn’t really answer the question, that aside baggage handling is good with minimal delay .the
The room (818) is reasonably spacious for a city centre hotel and is well appointed with a range of high tech functions , lights , curtains etc all controlled via an iPad .connectivity however is very hit and miss with a reconnect requirement every day .Sleep quality is good its unfortunate that the room is not provided with a double bed but two large singles with quite a large gap in between despite what they tell you on reception I.e. “you won’t notice the gap” - yes you do - ( there is a supplement for the same room with a double bed which calculates as twice the per night rate ) that seems to be commonplace in Japan. The bathroom was compact with a rain shower wet room with excellent water pressure , toiletries are pump action with a very pleasant fragrance.Housekeeping is very good and our room was sparklingly clean as is the whole property ,towels and linen are good quality and bright white water and coffee capsules are replenished daily . There is the option of breakfast ( additional charge ) based on a voucher system which are issued at check in , why it’s not registered on their computer's system is beyond me , the staff in the restaurant literally. Follow you around until you give them the voucher which if like me you go for breakfast before your wife and she has the vouchers leads to a degree of rigid behaviour breakfast which is a combination Ala Carte which means mainly egg dishes but not only and buffet style (which never changes ) for everything else ,the breakfast is a comprehensive mix of western and Japanese cuisine but for some inexplicable reason a selection of fruit tea bags such as camomile green tea etc which is common in all 4 and 5 star hotels is not available I was advised that a camomile tea bag was an extra charge REALLY !! ! in a 5 star high end property .yet again the language skills of some staff are poor to non existent Which in a hotel with a high percentage of foreign guests ,it seems strange that some waiters don’t understand basic restaurant requests. My wife and I are fortunate that we have travelled extensively around the world staying primarily in properties of this standard and this one has some glitches to iron out. That aside it should be said the hotel offers an attractive package if you can ignore the minor details we found illogical or just plain irritating, in short we would not return.

The building and our family suit were spacious and beautiful but the service did not meet our expectations given it was the most expensive of all of our accomodation and the hotel has an abundance of staff standing around appearing busy! Where do I start…Hard to catch a cab from the front was told there was a 10 minute wait for a cab when there are hundreds driving past constantly. Our wifi did not work the whole time were were there which is unacceptable given the price of the room per night and the business crowd that were constantly in the foyer. We went out one day at 8am and when we returned at 2pm the cleaners had only just started servicing our room and we were told it would take two hours to finish? We didn’t have and hand soap in the toilet. Our room rate didn’t include breakfast so the first morning I paid 150 for our breakfast buffet which at 9:30 (it ends at 10:30) was already dried up and unappealing. It was a western breakfast but everything was just plain weird. The french toast was created from a weird bread the croissants had ran out it was the worst breakfast from the three hotels we had stayed at we didn’t attend again. Hmmm the person who came to help connect our phone to the TV so we could stream television had the worst smelling feet to the point where we didn’t want to call for help again. The TV needed a cord to stream from phone to TV all the other hotels didn’t need this. The coffee machine took me 100 presses from all different angles to start working. When you wait at the desk for help or to pick up your bags there are 10 staff members all looking busy but not looking up to help. We were honestly left disappointed and for the price you pay I’m sure there are better options in Kyoto. The room was beautiful and spacious and the location to the train station were amazing but that’s where it ends.

This is one of the nicest hotel rooms I have ever stayed in. As soon as you walk into the building you can sense the carefully crafted ambience. The style is what I'd describe as a modern, minimalist Japanese style. The room was very large, even by London standards, we had a Superior Double, which had a king sized bed, a couch, table, bar, wardrobe, luggage area and a separated bathroom. The bathroom was large, with a walk in shower and bath tub. The style of the room really resonated with me and gave me a lot of inspiration. There is too much to describe, but a lot of thought has been put into the little touches around the hotel room, which added together provide for an extremely pleasant stay. The service was very good, the receptionist helped with a restaurant reservation. After we requested extra bottles of water on our first night, house keeping continued to provide us with extra bottles everyday which was a very nice touch. We were very sad to leave The Thousand, we will be back!

The Thousand’s hallmark is Zen-inspired modernist design, all minimalist shapes in neutral colors and luxurious natural materials. The atrium lobby dominated by a dramatic black stone stairway is striking. The sleek decor continues in the rooms, where everything is controlled by a tablet computer. The restaurant provides elaborate table service Japanese and American-style breakfasts. The location next to the Kyoto station and a busy shopping district is excellent.

Very cool IPAD controls for the room settings. Black out blinds also which helped. Temp can be controlled to both ends of spectrum, we slept with very cold and it was very effective.
