We spent only one night here as a luxury stop on a longer trip and it was hands-down worth every penny. We stayed in the Orchid Room which features a private spring-fed bath in case you're squeamish about the public onsen on the roof. While not at all pee-shy, I was just trying to prepare for the possibility that I...

The hotel is about 1km from SagaArashiyama JR station, which is about 15 minutes from Kyoto Station (Platform 33- Yes, its a huge station!). The hotel minibus picked us up from the station, but its an easy walk. The hotel staff speak just enough English to explain everything a foreign guest needs to know- about shoes, meals, bedding, the onsens,...

Thoroughly recommended, particularly if you are visiting Japan and want to stay at a ryokan - the 2-hour dinner and the breakfast were wonderful, and we had a room with a view out over the river by the bridge. It was only a short walk to the temples and other activities across the river, and also to the nearby Hankyu...

I wanted to have a traditional Kyoto style meal at a ryokan but most don't let you dine unless you are staying there. I chanced upon Hanaikada and they were happy to take my booking for lunch via email. The location is great, right next to the monkey park and near the Togetsu-kyo Bridge. Arashiyama is a must visit in...

After having few days of rush trip in Osaka and Kyoto, we decided to stay one night at Arashiyama as it was just in the right season - Autumn there. We chose Hanaikada after reviewing from TripAdvisor and indeed this was the right and perfect choice we had. The location is strategic and is walkable distance from the train station....

An amazing experience. A very self-consciously traditional ryokan that can also accommodate non-Japanese speakers. However, the experience here might be more rich if you are able to speak Japanese (I'm not able to but was with someone who can). Either way, this is definitely an escape from the fast pace and bustle of modern Japan. From the moment they picked...

We had a one night stay at Hanaikata on 7 Jun. The room was clean and service was satisfied, too. We enjoyed the newly developed onsen and traditional Kyoto style food (including dinner and breakfast). We didn't speak much Japanese, but the staffs guided us with simple English and gestures.

We chose this hotel because we wanted to experience a traditional Japanese Ryokan/ Onsen. It was a short 5 to 10 minute walk from Hankyu Arashiyama train station. On arrival we were made to feel very welcome and we really appreciated the high level of service throughout our stay. We selected a guest room with a semi-rotemburo which meant we...

Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.

“We had a 7.5 tatami room, the smallest type provided by Hanaikata, but it was big enough for two girls. Located in 2nd floor, the room was opened to the scenic point, Togetsu Bridge, and it was easily seen by pedastrians on bridge. It is recommended to pull curtains up when dressing Yukata up.”
