Good location and cheap, yes. But that's about it, and you get what you paid for, which is not a lot. The pictures must have been taken when the place open, during the Meiji era, because the reality is very different. We booked and paid for 3, but there was only 2 beds futons prepared...What a disappointment. With so many...

The people running the guest house are very kind and friendly. We were travelling with our teenage children and the owners would often leave snacks and treats out for them. The rooms are traditional, so basic, but very clean and comfortable and perfect for what we needed. The bathrooms are tiny - not much room to move about, but that...

I spent 2 weeks in Japan and this was my last hostel/hotel. The owner was exceptionally friendly and helpful. I arrived on the overnight bus, so I got to the hotel very early in the morning, and she gladly let me check-in (I just wanted to drop my bags off but my room was ready). The room itself is basic,...

It is not really near to any of the attractions or crowded area but it is located in a serene neighborhood. In terms of convenience, it depends on where you go and how you go around the attractions. We toured around Kyoto by bus and there are several bus stops which are about 5 mins walk from the guest house....

Very nice hotel, the rooms are big, and is not that far away from Kyoto station. About a 25 min walk. The owners were very nice. There wasn't a strong internet connection in my room, but outside in the lobby it was fine.

This is one of my cheapest accommodation in all my travels to Japan so far. Stayed here for 2 nights in a single room with private bath. The single room is surprisingly quite huge, except that there is no TV. There's a window but I didn't try opening it. Yes, there is a whole list of rules but it didn't...

Very good price. A bit old but clean. Nice, friendly and helpful staff. Good location for shopping and sightseeing. Got a nice room with a view over the roofs and Kyoto tower. A nice coffee and breakfast place next door. Good value for the money.

Very good budget hostel with private bathroom (booked a twin room as solo traveller as single rooms full). Hotel is a 15 minute walk from Kyoto station, a couple of minutes from Gojo subway and bus station. The lady at the front desk was very helpful and speaks good english. The room is Japanese tatami style, a nice experience and...

We left our Kyoto bookings quite late and because we were going in the autumn high season it was a mad scramble to find something in our budget. Costa Del Sol was the cheapest place we stayed in during our two week trip in Japan. ROOM: Basic but had a small table and enough hangers and a recessed space for...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
