We wanted to have a more authentic experience while in Japan and were told we needed to stay at a Ryokan. We found this place online and it was great. The room was what I had expected, but the meal was an amazing experience where they brought the food into our room. There was sushi, miso, tempura and a number... More

overall this place was ok - we had a nice room that was really warm and futons weren't as comfy as others we had stayed in . we booked the sukiyaki dinner for the night and weren't that impressed with it , was a quick throw together and poor quality beef just not as we have had in small shops... It is not a real Ryokan, modern version…But that said, with the exception of messy check in, service was old school meaning very good… There was a mix up during check in early morning: i had cancelled my first booking and replaced with a new one (with different dates), but they somehow assumed totally cancelled. Once we got that sorted,... More

The room was exceptionally disappointing: a Motel 6 version of what a ryokan should be like. Absolutely the cheapest appointments and furniture. Only plus: very helpful and friendly staff--- wonderful gentlemen.

We were not sure what to expect staying in a ryokan but this ryokan is a great mix of modern hotel and traditional ryokan. The lobby area is very modern and the rooms very traditional. The rooms are very spacious and have everything you need including a flat screen tv. Sleeping on the floor takes a little getting used to... More

The location of this ryokan is perfect as it is closed to lots of attraction in Kyoto. The room is huge and clean. The only disadvantage is the price. Not sure if it's worth the price we paid. For 1-2 nights, it's ok.

Stayed here 3 nights just after New Year. Hotel is a traditional Japanese hotel with tatami matts (ie sleeping on the floor). Good location and clean premises. Enjoyed the traditional Japanese breakfast. Only real downside is that it's not good value for money (imho). It's things like advertising push bikes only then to told that they don't have any but... While in Kyoto we have decided to stay at this traditional guesthouse. The staff was always available, extremely kind and even though they forgot about our Maliki/geisha dinner they have did everything possible in order to book us another nails dinner at another ryokan. Which I have to say it was perfect! Absolutely enjoyed it!

Negative: For the price we paid breakfast should have been included. There is no "do not disturb sign" so one time one of the cleaners just entered our room while we were sleeping and that was very weird and uncomfortable. Check in at 4pm and check out at 10am seems unreasonable. Positive: location, free wifi, front desk staff is super... More

My husband and I stayed here with another couple and we had a great time. The meals were good and the staff very hospitable. They were kind enough to allow us to cancel our dinner reservation on the same day. The rooms are sparse but we did not miss anything that was essential. I would stay here again.

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
