I have stayed at Kamogawakan for two times, First time with my boyfriend, second time with our 2 months old baby. Location is prefect, just a few minutes walk to the shopping district, 2 minutes walk to train, tunes of very good restaurants around, Starbucks just 1 minutes walk around the corner. Staffs are very nice and helpful, front desk... More

This ryokan is located in one of the best places to stay in kyoto! Main bus lines and great shopping are really close to the hotel, and also you are just a few steps from main streets of famous foods and izakayas! The room was really big for 4 people and the staff explained us how it works! From the... More

I loved this place! The room was a lot bigger than I thought. Walk in, little hallway with toilette through one door and bath through another. Enter into main room with table set up. Our host was the sweetest lady and super cool, very happy! She served us tea and a cookie to welcome us. There's another little room past... More

The Ryokan is very well located, near to the shopping and entertainment district of Kyoto and also within walking distance of a lot of the temples and shrines in Higashiyama. Given its location the Ryokan is therefore pretty expensive by Japanese standards. We stayed in a couple of other Ryokans during our trip to Japan and I would certainly say... More

Good accomodation. Traditional style within a hotel. Japanese breakfast was lovely. Great that you could open windows to get fresh air. The quality of the mats were excellent and the bedding warm for the cold nights. Close to Sanjo station. Not far from subway. Easy to get around. Close to excellent restaurants and convenience stores. One negative was the proximity... More

The hotel is close to a lot of restaurants and a train station. Highly recommended if you want to stay in a Japanese style ryokan and be close to the city where you can visit all the attractions of Kyoto. The Hotel is walking distance to the Gion District (Where you can see Geisha's). The staff Spoke good English, and... More

Staff were very welcoming and spoke good English. Breakfast included was delicious and served in dining room with separate cubicles so good for travelling alone. Also private enough to wear Japanese style dressing gown and slippers. Near Gion area river shops and temples close to Sanjo subway. Had a view of the river from my room. Also own little indoor... Strange that Tripadvisor ratings go from 3=average to 4=very good. I would rate this hotel as quite good. It is a traditional Japanese hotel so do not expect English TV or western things. Breakfast was nice and well-served. Room was quiet and clean. There is a strict adherence to check-in and check-out times in Japan. They called our room at... More

We came for Obon week and only spent a night here. It was a lovely night, the people who work here changed our room and set up the beds while we were out and about. They had complimentary tea, robes to wear in the room, slippers, toiletries, refrigerator, and a public bath. The next morning they held our bags there... More

The hotel other than provided us a very great experience of traditional Japanese style living, with the typical Japanese tatami room type, it also provided a very authentic Japanese style breakfast every day. In addition, the hotel is located at a very strategic location. It is just a few minutes walk to the nearest subway station and also other famous... More

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
