I booked this Ryokan after reading previous reviews about the dinner served and I was blown away. If you are a foodie then this is a must! The chef created an 8 course master piece from local seasonal ingredients purchased that morning - the pictures speak for themselves. The Ryokan itself is traditional and very well maintained. Rooms are small...

Firstly, be very careful about how you book a stay here. I booked mine through Expedia, and at no point was it mentioned that you had to book dinner at least 3 nights in advance. The ryokan's website doesn't make this clear either. And after all, one of the best things about this ryokan is meant to be the food!!!...

Dear Ms. Claire P, Thank you for your stay. We mention on every booking website, of course Expedia, that guests who want to have dinner in our Ryokan need to reserve it 3days before you have. Moreover you have 2 choices whether you stay with dinner or you just stay(not having dinner in the Ryokan) when you apply for your...

My friend pre-paid for the rooms and dinners thro agoda.com. An error was made for the dinner reservation on the 2nd night, whereby we will be returning late from a day trip/ Upon check-in, we informed that we needed to change the dinner for the 2nd night to the 3rd night. We were informed that it cannot be done, nor...

Dear Mr./ Mrs. Mei Leng C, Thank you for your stay. My partner and I stayed for one night during our trip to Kyoto as we wanted to experience a traditional Japanese ryokan. Rooms were fairly comfortable and came with a sink and toilet. There are 3 shower rooms which are shared among all the guests. Dinner was a stellar experience, food was very interesting and nothing like what we've ever...

I LOVED this ryokan, this was my first destination of my 18 day holiday in Japan, and by far the best!! i simply loved everything about this ryokan, it made Kyoto even more special. Stayed in here for two nights with my friend. The room was very great with very traditional Japanese style design. The staffs are very welcoming and the hotel itself is really close to Kyoto station, so you can actually just walk there. If you want to experience Japanese living style, you definitely should stay here!

Stayed here for one night and we loved it. The location is perhaps not the most tranquil (with a car park directly opposite), but once you step inside the ryokan, you feel like you're in a different world. The ryokan was built over 150 years ago, and was sympathetically renovated a few years ago. The room was cosy but well...

Stayed a night with Kaiseki dinner. Excellent Kaiseki with very attentive staff. Room was cosy with separate room with table and chairs where breakfast served. The breakfast was also quite enjoyable. We had a traditional Japanese breakfast, being in Japan, which was also quite tasty. The only drawback was that the inn was cold. I saw that the building had...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
