Set at the foot of Higashiyama Mountain in Kyoto's district of temples, the hotel is a sanctuary of space minutes from the city's cultural treasures and the bustle of downtown with double-height windows throughout that frame the surrounding beauty through every season. You arrive through an alluring bamboo forest that leads to the sanctuary of an 800-year old pond garden “Shakusui-en” at its heart, a haven of quiet dignity, discreet expression and strong engagement with nature. Inspired by traditional artistry yet exhilaratingly contemporary the hotel is a modern window into the rich history of this ancient capital city. The hotel encompasses some of the city’s most spacious 110 guest rooms and 13 suites plus 57 hotel residences; four dining venues including a beautiful tea house in the garden; an exclusive spa and indoor pool; and a series of sophisticated meeting spaces, with a custom-designed chapel for weddings and other events.

I know the review for all of our Japan reviews states Nov 2020, but we traveled Nov 2019 since TA’s calendar only goes back a year! We absolutely loved The Four Seasons and Kyoto which was the imperial city. Every feature of this hotel permeates for a Zen vibe. We had a one bedroom suite which was pricey but worth it -large and most comfortable, especially with double-height windows flooding the spaces with natural light. The stylish Japanese hotel is centered around an 800-year-old ikeniwa, or pond garden. The impeccably manicured grounds are visible throughout the light-filled building, and a charming garden terrace offers a scenic setting for breakfast or a sake toast after dusk. Kyoto is the home of green tea, so what better place to enjoy it than at Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto’s very own chashitsu (tea house) we took part in a traditional ceremony overseen by an experienced tea master, all in the serene and intimate surroundings of the Shakusui-en garden. The spa was wonderful and we had many treatments . What a wonderful stay and some of the best restaurants and shrines in Kyoto.

I had a bad experience at pool staff. Right after check-in I immediately called and make time-slot reservation at 4:00Pm but when we went there our name was not in the list the staff told us we need to wait for an hour because there is available. So I said yes and she let us use the Japanese bath while waiting for the pool. But after a few minutes we were at the bath another staff came to us and said we need to get out from the bath because she will disinfect it for the next guest so went at relaxation area but when we were there another staff came again and told us to wait a little longer because the guests before us is still using pool. I felt bad also the phone call early morning in our room from 7:30AM it keeps on ringing until 8:00. We didn’t request for a wake-up call. The last is our breakfast! We are booked for an in-room dining In dinner and breakfast but we are served of packed or take-out breakfast. What happened to Four Seasons hospitality that is famous in the World. I’m kinda sad because I haven’t had a good experience with the staff at Four Seasons Kyoto.

Good uniquely designed hotel that brings in the Kyoto element to the property. Service and everything was solid 5 star quality but docked a (point) due to personal preference for hotels that are access friendly. It’s more of a secluded property but if you like that its a five star given limited other high end options in Kyoto

We have such a long bucket list, going back for 2nd visits isn't usually a high priority for us. Our stay at the Four Seasons Kyoto changed our mind. We'd go back in a heartbeat. Suite #201 had 1 king bedroom with a massive master bath.... dual vanity, huge soaking tub in separate area from freestanding glass shower, separate make-up vanity, long row of closet space with bench for getting ready. Seated dining area for 4-5 and separate powder bath in the spacious living area. Views are amazing. Floor to ceiling glass in both living area and bedroom overlook pond, expansive gardens and tea house. Four Seasons service only enhanced by an exceptional staff. They were great with our 2 kids! (Speaking of kids, you'd never know there's a primary school just outside the walls except when traffic is stopped in front of the hotel for 30 minutes in the morning to allow the children to cross the driveway.) This property is so beautiful. We didn't make time for a tea service while we were here, but do spend time enjoying cocktails on the terrace... you'll never want to leave.

Four Seasons in Kyoto is great each and everytime. I never miss it each time I am in Kyoto. While the garden is in itself perfect, above all, the most remarkable is the people. Special mention goes to Miyu Mikami of the restaurant Brasserie for serving me well in my every visit and knowing all my quirks and making sure they are all met! The white hot chocolate is to die for, by the way!
