Shiraume is by far the best place I have ever stayed at. My wife and I have stayed 3 times, and every time we are more than pleased. The staff is always highly professional and pleasantly personal at the same time. The Okami-san being the epitome of this personable professionalism. We are treated like honored guests. The breakfast and dinner, which are included in the price, are luxurious. My wife and I always say we want to eat out someplace else but the combination of convenience and the quality of the service and food make the choice easy in the end: We would rather have a relaxing meal in our suite. I very much enjoy being able to drink freely and for free anything I want out of the mini-fridge in our room. The toiletries are also high quality and the choice of fancy baths is again luxurious. Even the baths included in our suites are always really fantastic. The whole inn is filled with history. It is like staying in a fine antique but the antique is still used every day. I can’t imagine a better place to get a feel for Japanese aesthetics and hospitality. Shiraume is an expensive place to stay and I can’t afford to stay there every weekend but I would rather save up a little and really enjoy the best accommodations in Kyoto on occasion than stay anywhere else. Speaking of location: Shiraume is in a very central spot to enjoy many famous places in Kyoto. The Yasaka-Shrine, the Kabuki Minami-za, Gion and all it has to offer, and some many other places to enjoy are all around Shiraume. It is so easy to get there too. There is a train station just 1 or 2 minutes walking distance from it. Three words sum up Shiraume: Luxury, Convenience, Professionalism. If you can stay here do. I am writing this because I want to support this fantastic place and show my thanks to all the amazing people who make my stays so amazing. I feel I am leaving out so much but you’ll just have to visit yourself to know how I feel.

I've been trying to book this place since 2 years ago and finally out of a whim, I managed to secure a reservation and never have I been this pleased so far in my indulging. I've been to Kyoto more than my fingers can account for but I keep coming back regardless of the hordes of tourists who are all in to take away with them the rich and historical aspect of the old capital. Shiraume is tucked away in one of the oldest roads along the Shirakawa River from the bustling shopping arcade. Traveling solo, I've never felt more accommodated under the care of Tomoko-san and her staff with such attentiveness that I couldn't bear to leave even after 2 nights. After many conversations, I got to know Kyoto more than I could in the trips I've made throughout the years. How can I go to other ryokans not expecting the same thing? What am I suppose to do but to book the next following trip. I can go on and write a journal based on just my 2 days but there are plenty of other reviews here to come to a conclusion that you can't choose a better place than Shiraume. Regardless of it's imminent charms of a traditional ryokan, you can't compare it to even one of the most luxurious places there is even if it was a place inlaid with gold.

Look no further: this is the best, most beautiful location in Kyoto. For the past ten years of visiting Kyoto, I've always stayed in Gion, but I've never stayed in a more perfect place than Shiraume. Your night will include a view of the canal, white herons, wooden baths, weeping willows, splendid old artwork, sweet service, and waking and dreaming in an authentic, former geisha house. Your time will be lovely, dreamy, and unforgettable.

We booked to stay one night in the ryokan and it was the absolute highlight of our trip to Japan. We stayed in another part of Kyoto for a few nights and ended up going for a walk through Gion and came across the river and the row of houses and mentioned how nice it would be to stay in a place like that, before realising it was the ryokan we had booked (an old geisha house in a former life). The location is excellent, right in the heart of Gion. The food is incredible and the service of the staff was outstanding, a real gem. We will definitely be back!
