This is, by far, the best experience I’ve had in Japan. Everything about this ryokan is perfect and the service and hospitality are topnotch. I stayed at the Baian which is also run by Shiraume and just right around the next block from the main ryokan. I don’t know where to start but here are a few outstanding highlights of my experience in this alluring place: A) the location can’t be beat — right in the heart of the the Gion district in a tree lined street right by the Shirakawa stream — it’s like going back in time. It is magical at night especially on a full moon. Many of Kyoto’s treasures are within walking distance and the main artery (Shijo Street), including restaurants, theaters, markets, malls, subways, bus stops, are all within walking distance. Don’t miss Chion-in temple especially at early dawn. B) My room was located on the ground floor of an old machiya house and was very quaint, cozy, and truly Zen that if not for the mandatory sightseeing, I can stay in the entire day. I love every little detail in the room—from the lovely view of the garden to the tatami heated floors to the wooden tub to the toiletries and amenities. Everything was perfect. C) The breakfast and kaiseki dinner were superb and delicious and presented with excellent care and attention. D) Special mention to the host Tomoko and the other ladies including Emi—they genuinely express Japanese hospitality and grace! I love their storytelling!

I can’t say enough. My experience in this place made my trip to Kyoto all the more memorable and unforgettable. A++++

If you're looking for a truly authentic experience of traditional Japan then look no further than Siraume. The cobbled street that leads to the entrance is lined with willow and cherry blossom trees providing a calm get away from the busier parts of Kyoto. As soon as you enter there is a feeling of calm and relaxation. All the women that work there are smiley, friendly and welcoming as if you are special guests in their home and are always impeccably presented in their kimonos. They are full of knowledge and top tips for exploring the local area.

We stayed for 3 nights and had breakfast every morning and the traditional kaiseki meals on 2 of the nights all in our room. This meal is well worth the experience and must be approached with an open mind. They present their food with care and tell stories about some of the ingredients which adds to the magical experience. The Kobe beef option was the most mouth-wateringly delicious beef we've ever had and you'd be missing out if you didn't get it. With each meal they provide a hand written note personal to you. We have kept all of ours including our little origami birds as momentos. They even came up with a cake for my husband for his birthday and sang happy birthday which was so sweet of them.

The rooms are bright, warm and welcoming. We were surprised at how quiet it was despite being a traditional Japanese house. The futons on the floor are extremely comfortable and we slept very well there.

The location is perfect for exploring as it's not far from the traditional streets that are very popular with tourists and there are two metro stations close by.

We wish we could've stayed longer as we felt so relaxed and happy at Siraume. We highly recommend this beautiful place and the wonderful women who run it.

The attention to detail is everywhere, from the beautiful decor and lighting of the rooms to the seasonal food (one of the best kaiseki dinners I've had in Japan). The Okami was exquisite, always impeccably dressed in kimono and checking frequently that we were comfortable without almost making her presence sensed. She also speaks great English and was kind enough to share interesting facts and stories about the seasonal food or the history of Kyoto in a very charming way. Also worth noting are the futons: they were incredibly comfortable.

We have stayed in quite a few high end ryokans (including the famous Tawaraya), and this has been by far our favorite. Thank you so much for an amazing two nights!

Perfection! Shirame clearly ranks as one of the greatest experiences as a place to stay in Kyoto. I went with my 13 year old grandson so he could experience it and we both loved it.

It is a traditional ryokan, originally 350 years old, up to modern standards, beautifully appointed, but be prepared to sleep on futon like comfort on the floor. Location could not be better, over a short bridge over a river, in the center of Gion in Old Kyoto walking distance to nearly everything you might want there. Blocks from the center of luxury shopping in modern Kyoto.

With only 5 suites, you must book as soon as you know you are coming to Japan. The service and food are impeccable. Have breakfast in in the open air in the river room overlooking running river water and see a gray heron pose for you. Have a multi course gourmet Kobe steak dinner beautiful to look at and delicious to eat. Relax daily in one of two private jacuzzi rooms and have a private masseuse arranged for you in your room (9,000 yen was quoted for one hour).

Welcoming and caring as if you are a guest in a private home, with daily personal beautifully hand written menus and notes left by Saho, the charming proprietress, decorated with origami birds. Perfection!

We stayed at Shiraume for two nights and it was probably best hospitality experience we’ve ever had.
Tomoko and her staff went above and beyond from the moment we checked in. Tomoko greeted us at the door, helped us get changed into house shoes and helped us plan out our two days of sightseeing in Kyoto. We didn’t specifically ask for her help, so this was totally going the extra mile. She helped us put together an itinerary to see all our highlights and recommended some additional sights, plus called us cabs several times to our destinations.
The traditional Japanese dinner served in your room was so unique, and became kind of a history lesson, with Tomoko and her staff sharing facts about the origins of the dishes we were eating.
Each day, our in-room soaking tub was drawn with hot water so I took several long relaxing soaks in the room.
The sleeping mats were surprisingly comfy, we had an amazing nights sleep on them.
They even have nice little touches like a welcome tea and sweet when you arrive back after a day of sight seeing, and a daily happy hour with sake and drinks available in their library.
We kept joking that it felt like the entire staff here knew what you were up to and what you needed next while we were there. We felt so cared for and pampered here, cannot recommend booking a stay highly enough!

My daughter and I had a magnificent experience at Shiraume. Tomoko, Saho and the rest of the staff treated us like royalty and took care of our every need. We felt like we were transported to another place and time, and thoroughly enjoyed the traditional ambiance, service and food.

We stayed in "Umekoyomi" on the first floor, which was spacious and had a nice view of the river. We especially appreciated the horigotatsu (hole under the table for legs), which made our long meals very comfortable and enjoyable. Our room and bathroom were immaculate, and the bedding was very comfortable.

The location of the ryokan is excellent for exploring Gion and the Higashiyama area. Tomoko is a wealth of knowledge and will provide suggestions as needed.

A word of advice... do not book reservations for large lunches while staying here, as the breakfast and dinners are very filling. You will not want to eat much more during the day, perhaps just a light snack.

It was such a treat to be served kaiseki dinner in our room... course after exquisite course. Each course was clearly explained and stunning to look at.

I highly recommend booking this ryokan early, as it is priced very well for the quality offered. There are only 5 rooms, so booking early is advised.

We hope to return someday to this superb and tranquil ryokan, run by the gracious Tomoko-san and her top-notch staff!

Look no further: this is the best, most beautiful location in Kyoto. For the past ten years of visiting Kyoto, I've always stayed in Gion, but I've never stayed in a more perfect place than Shiraume. Your night will include a view of the canal, white herons, wooden baths, weeping willows, splendid old artwork, sweet service, and waking and dreaming in an authentic, former geisha house. Your time will be lovely, dreamy, and unforgettable.

We live overseas, but have stayed at Shiraume more than 5 times over the last 15 years. We love everything about Shiraume including their welcoming atmosphere, quality service and food, beautiful location, facilities, cleanliness, and attention to details. We have stayed many ‘Ryokan’ across Japan, but Shiraume is one of the best accommodations we have stayed in the past. We will come back again next time we are in Japan. Thank you!

To say that my recent stay at Shiraume was outstanding, would be a gross understatement. From being in Kyoto, in the famed Gion area, on Shinbashi, the most beautiful street in Gion (14 brides photographed on one day), on the Shirakawa river, in a beautifully restored 1870 residence of Geisha trainees (Maiko) turned into a magnificent Japanese-style hotel (ryokan), only describes the location. This only sets the mood for what turned out to be the most unique and pleasant vacation of my long life. From the moment you enter Shiraume, Tomoko (owner, host, and soon to be friend), and her team of 6 wonderful ladies, are ever- present, smiling (I can tell, even with masks on), and there to help make your stay an unforgettable experience. Handwritten personal notes always appear when you come for delicious and personalized meals, or enter your room after a day out and them making sure you got to where you wanted to go when you ventured out. I can honestly say that I felt like royalty in historic Japan. This was my best vacation ever.

I've been trying to book this place since 2 years ago and finally out of a whim, I managed to secure a reservation and never have I been this pleased so far in my indulging.

I've been to Kyoto more than my fingers can account for but I keep coming back regardless of the hordes of tourists who are all in to take away with them the rich and historical aspect of the old capital. Shiraume is tucked away in one of the oldest roads along the Shirakawa River from the bustling shopping arcade. Traveling solo, I've never felt more accommodated under the care of Tomoko-san and her staff with such attentiveness that I couldn't bear to leave even after 2 nights. After many conversations, I got to know Kyoto more than I could in the trips I've made throughout the years. How can I go to other ryokans not expecting the same thing? What am I suppose to do but to book the next following trip.

I can go on and write a journal based on just my 2 days but there are plenty of other reviews here to come to a conclusion that you can't choose a better place than Shiraume. Regardless of it's imminent charms of a traditional ryokan, you can't compare it to even one of the most luxurious places there is even if it was a place inlaid with gold.
