I booked the Ramada in the knowledge that it was newly opened and that I hoped the rooms would be freshly decorated and they were. The bathroom is partitioned from the bedroom by glass and there is a blind that you can lower if you want privacy. The bath itself has a hand-held shower and an over-head shower for which the run-off goes everywhere. There is a shower curtain but the design does not assist the draining of this water which ultimately ends-up in a puddle on the floor.
The room was a King sized we paid extra to get a non-smoking king-sized city room alas the view could only be seen if you stood at an angle to the window. We booked through the Ramada website and were disappointed to find that they had problems with our booking when we arrived although the free fruit that they brought to our room for booking through the site and free breakfast due to the mix-up was good compensation.
The bedroom was spotlessly clean and the bed was comfortable and the bed linens of a nice quality. The colour scheme of the hotel interior is of soft browns and beige and is easy on the eye. The carpet outside the lift on our floor looked like it needed a good vacuum, I think this is due to the carpet being new.
Breakfast was ok and not as splendid or with as much variety as we had experienced in other hotels on our trip but admittedly we did not pay as much.
The staff were wonderful and very helpful. They really were the stars of the stay.
The location of the hotel is great and very close to the Bell Tower. The no. 201 and 610 bus get you from the main station.
You can make your way to the terracotta army easily yourself by taking the 306 bus from the main station it is an hours ride. No need to take the more expensive mini-bus' the main bus is great and air-conditioned (6RMB p/p).
There is a airport bus that leaves you at the main station or Melody Hotel (near the bell tower) we took this on our return to the airport (26RMB p/p). Watch out there are three terminals. Terminal 1 & 2 are mainly domestic - best to know which one you want to go to first as there are no signs to say which airlines go from which on the drive in. There is a shuttle from terminal 1 to terminal 2.
Our plane was delayed on our arrival in Xi'an so we took a taxi. Please be aware that even if you go to the official taxi rank they will still try to bargain a price off meter. Expect to pay 170RMB to the city centre (we checked this with an official) on-meter but if you can negotiate about 100RMB off-meter. Also be aware that they will ask you to pay the toll and parking fee which is about 15RMB. If you are on the meter then note that you will get some extra sight-seeing on your journey - our taxi driver took us round the city first.
There are main placed to eat near the Bell tower. Take a walk round the Muslim area for great street food and try King Town for dinner one night.
If your time is short for your trip to Xi'an rest assured you can do it and the terracotta army in a day.
Rooms were clean tidy, and cleaned every day.
Showers were good, as was bath.
I stayed 1223 which is at the front of the hotel so problem for me was constant traffic noise throughout the night which in conjunction with jetlag made for a disturbed night.
Not a problem for me ( because I was working, and had to be up early anyway) was the public tannoy clock which starts to chime every half hour from 0600-2400, if you want a more relaxing night ask for a room at the back, the view is not so good but youll get a better nights sleep.
Service was good, staff friendly, the food was good too, but I took off to the Muslim Quarter and eat on the street for about 5 USD a night.
Its not the best hotel in Xian but its low cost, centrally placed and has creature comforts like a gym etc.
We saw Bampo Village, Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, the Terra Cotta Warriors and the City....City Wall during the day and ate, drink and shopped all night.
I had pre arranged a hotel pick up from the airport; we were charged CNY 700 - that's about £80. I then had to go back to the airport collect an item while the driver waited and return to the hotel. The hotel did kindly let me take a hotel porter with me to speak Chinese. The return trip cost me CNY 310 that's about £36.
On leaving Xi'an we got an ordinary taxi to take us to the airport - one way CNY120 that's £14 !!
I did also use the hotel booked service to drive to the Terracotta Warriors. I paid well above what the cost should be. You would be better to get a normal taxi and agree a price or agree a meter fare or go through another tour company. Note: you do NOT need a tour guide for the terracotta warriors. Audio guides are available and from what we overheard from so many guides they were just describing exactly what you are looking at. Remember take your passports to get your tickets.
The rooms were comfortable but only one room had working air conditioning. The staff were not interested. Only one spoke any English take your phone app. Rather rude imperious staff who clearly look down on western people. Odd bathrooms with glass walls and sliding partitions. Toilet and shower with no privacy so your room mate/partner has to go out if you have a shower or use the toilet.
Our rooms were on a floor with families with younger children and situated directly opposite the lifts which were bing bonging all night beyond 3am and then started again very early in the morning. No sleep. It was infuriating considering the price we were paying.
We did try the breakfast- a mix of semi western and Chinese fare. Horrid coffee. Grossly overpriced. The Chinese habit of not using a handkerchief but clearing the nose mucous through the mouth and spitting happened even in the restaurant.
Note: they will not give you your deposit back until they have checked your room to ensure you have not taken anything - absolutely insulting and a real time waster as they have lots of rooms to check and you may have left getting to the airport a bit fine.
Do visit Xi'an and do stay around this area; do not stay at the Ramada Bell Tower.
What happened was, I walked in to the room and I thought it is a very nice suite room, got a small living room area and space is very good for two people. But, things happened within an hour, first, the safe doesn't work and they came and fixed it said it run out of batteries.
Second, when we were back for dinner and washing hand in the bathroom, the sink collapse!!! Collapse! No joke about yhis! It was unvelievable. They came and fixed it for an hour til 11:30. Third, when we are about to have a shower we found that the shower sprinkler holder doesn't work so we have to hold the sprinkler for shower the whole time.
Last, when I thought everything is alright now, then things happened again today! I came back from bell tower nearby and was very hot so about to get change but then when I opened the closet door, the whole big glass fell down almost cut my hand! I held it and put it on side until staff came. They understand how ridiculous it looks but they can do nothing for me as they are quite full got no other twin suite room for us.
Well, I have to admit that I'm very disappointed but I have no choice to change hotel as I paid 6 nights before I check in so I have to stay for 5 more night. I can suggest you tho, if you have a choice, don't come! Stay some where else.
They have not do anything or try to arrange us anything when things happened. The only thing they did were offer us a One Day free breakfast. You know what, I actually don't care about the breakfast but the room quality!
My room came with no breakfast, and the other room came with one breakfast (we stayed for 3 nights).
The superior double room I had was wonderful. No complaints at all.
The breakfast was tasty, however it was predominantly Chinese cuisine; vegetables, noodles, rice, eggs, fruit. As a foreigner living in Beijing I was expecting a more continental/international breakfast from this chain of hotels as I get fed up with Chinese food!!
It costs 68 RMB per person.
The location is fabulous as it is a 10 minute walk from the Drum and Bell Towers and the Muslim Quarter and Mosque, This area has great food stalls and is good for souvenir shopping.
Upon checking out, we were told the rooms hadn't been paid for, despite the money being taken from my friends account. The hotel staff assured us the money hadn't been taken from the account and continued to show us copies of the receipts we had signed, saying this was a deposit only and we hadn't paid for our rooms! This was confusing us as we had paid - so why tell us 4000 RMB was a deposit? After a lot of confusion and poor communication they put the money back on my friends card and then charged her card once more, minus the deposit! A lot of hassle in my opinion and unnecessary work. This took about 30 minutes.
My friends were also charged for eating one breakfast despite it being included in their room rate. There was some confusion as the breakfast was only allowed to be taken on a specific day during the stay, however my friends ate the breakfast on a different day - not knowing anything about what day it could be taken. The hotel refused to refund the money saying it was our fault etc etc, After more paperwork, phone calls to the restaurant the money was refunded.
On the previous night before check out, I was told 1pm is the check out time and that as I wanted to keep my room until 3pm, I ha to pay half my room rate - 229 RMB. Reluctantly I paid it as I had a long journey back to Beijing.
The following morning I found out check out was 2pm and I had paid all of that money for one extra hour. I decided to vacate my room at 2pm and demanded my money back. Which I received.
All in all, it took 1 hour and 6 members of staff to sort out these issues.
As a hospitality graduate, this level of service was poor, inefficient and damn right unpleasant.
There were few apologies, the staff laughed at any opportunity thinking the situation was funny. Many of them did not speak English which of course made matters worse between everyone. I really liked the room and location but I very much doubt I will stay here again.
The facilities were not up to scratch, it's not particularly disabled friendly should one need the WC in the lobby (stairs to reach it), concierge would not order us a taxi to the train station, The gym was nothing to write home about and the reception staff did not communicate well between themselves or show and kind of empathy towards us.
Sad end to a wonderful trip to Xi'an.
