We stayed at Universal hotel as part of a 2 week China tour for 2 nights...and believe me, that was TWO NIGHT TOO LONG. As other reviewers have noted, the lobby area was so-so;but the real nightmare was the rooms. We had booked 3 rooms, one for us and two for the four children. Now, I've NEVER in 35 years of...

When pulling up to Guilin Universal Hotel on a muggy April night, I thought to myself, I will survive here. The lobby was somewhat passé (but so is a lot of mainland China), but appeared acceptable. However, after getting off the elevator the sketchiness of the hotel began to turn my fatigued night into a fate worse than death. The...

Stayed as part of a small tour group, so we had no issues not speaking chinese as our guide managed the check in / out process for us. We had a river view room, which almost made my back pain after sleeping on the beds (planks of wood in disguise) worth it. Great people watching / river watching from the...

We got a very strong sense that westerners were not welcome here. While we can understand that staff may not have much English the attitude leaves much to be desired. Lackluster performance, deadbeat staff, ignoring requests, generally dismissive. Clearly native chinese were given preferental treatment. We booked a standard room and upgraded it at extra cost. However we were placed...

Everything here was disappointing, except the river view from our hotel room. Hardly anybody spoke English; when we checked in at 10 pm it seemed as if we were an annoyance. They could not recommend a Chinese restaurant for us to eat at, so, for two nights we had dinner at an Italian restaurant around the corner. Don't have a...

Stayed here as part of a long tour of China and it was perfectly fine. Have to say I'm a little biased here as I completely enjoyed everything about Guilin - apparently 75% of it's tourists are from within China, and it felt less 'westernised' than other places we visited. The hotel is in a very good location, right on...

We stayed at the Universal, and didn't book before we arrived and were shocked at the rack rates and the staff were only prepared to budge a little, so we went to the conference room and booked the hotel on eLong.com for a heaps cheaper rate. However the booking didn't show up for reception staff so we still have to...

My friends and I stayed at Universal Hotel for two night in Guilin. We traveled to Guilin just for ourselves. We were so exciting when we arrrivaled at there. And we walked aroud the downtown. The sightseeing near the Jiefang Bridge on Li River was so amazing. It was lucky that this hotel just on the end of this bridge....

I stayed in the Universal for three nights at the end of October and, all in all, it was good value for money (around CNY250pn, found on wego.com). Location - this is what a hotel is Guilin is all about (stay in Yangshou if you'd rather be in the mountains instead of a city). The Universal is a very short...
