Stayed for a night in preparation for an early morning meetup the next day. Exceeded my expectations for what a cheap room in Davao looks like based on previous experience. One room single bed was clean and comfy, A/C was cool and cable TV was decent. Bathroom was sparkling clean and spacious, hot water works! Reception staff were friendly, attentive and efficient. I was able to request them to store my small bag for three days afer check-out. Only downside was that I was given a 4th floor room and there's no lift going up. If you end up staying on 3rd and 4th floor rooms, you get free exercise going up and down the stairs! Otherwise an overall pleasant experience for me. :)

We booked for an overnight stay. It was cheap yet the room is simple yet decent. The television in our room was not working properly though. Amidst the affordable price, they still offer free breakfast... The staff were friendly.

Although this hotel has only been open for 6 months (anniversary on 28th February 2018) it has gathered some great reviews in that time on some online sites which tempted me to pick it as the base for a short visit to Davao to celebrate my partner's birthday.

It is very centrally located, only a few minutes walk from the Victoria Plaza but (possible because it is so new) none of the taxi drivers recognised the name. If you're going to stay, taking note of the address will help - even then it's not easy. The best bet is to take a copy of the location in Google maps - in fact it's just a few metres from the Road 2/Road 1 junction with Surveryor Street.

The hotel is a new build on four floors, the ground floor housing the reception and dining area. There are 15 rooms with fast wi-fi access covering all rooms and the reception area. (Note: various online guides describe wi-fi as only available in the reception area - this information needs to be updated.)

There is a limited parking immediately in front of the hotel (very steep ramp only suitable for a 4x4/SUV), with some street parking. The hotel appears to have its own generator but does not have a lift - having said that, the hotel took my wishes into account and allocated a room on the second floor (American/Pinoy numbering, first floor for Brits like me!).

Our room was a good size, a comfortable king size bed, built in wardrobes (no safe) and en-suite comfort room with hot shower. Air-con was very efficient (remote). Cable TV (Sky) is provided with approx 15-20 channels. Also a desk and two stools. No telephone. Soap and very high quality towels are provided.

Everything was spotless in the room, a testimony to the standards of cleanliness throughout the hotel. Although we didn't have an outside window, this wasn't a problem as the plain white colour scheme of the walls made the room feel bright. We did notice some noise echoing from another room down the corridor but it wasn't too intrusive.

Breakfast was basic, essentially a bun with a fried egg (on day one of our two day stay) and a 3-in-one coffee. This was adequate but not spectacular, however we mustn't be too critical as the room price was only just over 1000PHP per couple including breakfast. Hot and cold water was available via a dispenser in the dining area.

The staff were incredibly pleasant and helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. On a number of ocassions they secured taxis for us within minutes.

We tend to avoid the big name hotels as they tend to provide an impersonal corporate service and prefer to go for the smaller hotels which usually have more character and where you feel your custom is valued. This is certainly the case with the Strand Suites and I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel. It was a real gem of a find and I'm glad we stayed here.

Location-wise, the property is situated in the middle of Davao City. It is located in the Poblacion District. It is less than 400 meters away the busy thoroughfare of JP Laurel Ave. near Victoria Plaza Mall. It's like the Korean Town of Davao City because of the Korean establishments around. It's just near most of the city's tourist attractions.

At first, the hotel was a little hard for the taxi driver to locate because it's inside a village and it's kinda new.

The property is pleasant in it's glorious white paint. It's well secured by a CCTV system. The staffs were friendly, polite and helpful. The doorman even acts like a concierge to help us with our needs like transportation.

The room were very clean as with its bathroom. It has a small cable equipped LCD TV. Also has wifi. Bathroom has heater.

Probably the only downside of the property is the lack of elevator. Our room is at 4th floor. Having a baby with us. It's hard to go up the steep flight of stairs. Breakfast was basic with egg sandwich & coffee. But no complaints for budget conscious travelers like us.

Not bad for 1,200/night

THE SITUATION
We were on a budget and planned to stay for an entire week. We chose The Strand because the online information said it:
1) Was in the right location (near malls)
2) Fit our budget of less than 1000 pesos a night
3) Pictures showed it was clean and looked fairly new
4) Didn't have that motel vibe

PROS:
1) Affordable -- less than 1000 a night, man.

2) Friendly, accommodating staff -- we had to change our booking because we were going to stay in another hotel after our first night in Davao, and then go back to The Strand on the third night. Of course, we gave this confirmation before the no cancellation deadline, but what I liked was that we didn't have to do any rebooking online. The staff arranged the modification for us.

3) Morning coffee and bread -- The booking.com information said that breakfast wasn't included. They actually serve one cup of coffee (Nescafe 3-in-1) and one piece of bread (stuffed pandesal) from 6am-10am. It's not a substitute for a proper breakfast, but it can stave off hunger while you're on your way to finding a restaurant or cafe.

4) New building -- It was built only 2 years ago

5) Clean -- Some dirt between the bathroom tiles but not a big deal

CONS:
1) Steep & limited parking -- We cracked the car's front fender, and there were only two parking slots. Another option is street parking, but then won't be as secure.

2) No 24-hour pharmacies within walking distance -- I got sick and the hotel doesn't sell paracetamols either. Bring your own med kit if you plan to stay here.

3) No elevator -- They only have 4 levels, so not a big deal unless you're a PWD. Just request for a lower floor upon booking, NOT upon check-in.

4) No jeepney or bus stops nearby -- it's an 8-10 minute walk from the hotel to the nearest street with public transport. We suggest downloading the Grab application so that you can book a taxi anytime. Davao taxi drivers are nice :)

5) Saggy mattress

OVERALL: Great for those who are no-frills travelers. The room was very basic, but spacious and clean (we booked a studio). However, next time we might stay somewhere else with better parking and closer to a convenience store or pharmacy.
There were other minuscule inconveniences but at such a cheap price per night I was happy to just let them go.

Excellent for short stay. Hotel is new so as expected it is fresh and clean. Just 300 meters from Seda Abreeza Mall and other restaurants. Finding transport is easy and going around on foot is a breeze. Very friendly staff and WiFi on every floor.
