Staying at a ryokan is a great way to immerse yourself into Japanese life (or a least a very cultivated version of it) and we scheduled our stay at Madokano Mori at an early stage in our latest trip to Japan. The Madokano Mori delivered as a quintessentially Japanese experience and also as a very luxurious base from which to enjoy Hakone. Our room was quite magnificent and we made amble use of our private onsen on the balcony. Breakfast and dinner was served in-room by a charming member of hotel staff. The food was very good but didn’t quite match some of the stellar meals that I have enjoyed in other ryokan.

The Madokano Mori has fairly decent public transport links, which is particularly useful for those with an Hakone Free Pass. We walked to and from Sounzan ropeway station, from which you can take a cable car over the collapsed volcano and onwards to the lake. Do use the baggage drop off/collection service from Hakone-Yumoto station, if that is the start/end point for your trip to Hakone. This allows you to get on with your day without having to firstly (or lastly) go to your hotel to drop off/collect your luggage.

There is very little incentive to leave Madokano Mori in the evening (non-residents tend to come to it, if anything) and accordingly it was nice to have a decent bar on hand to refresh oneself in the evening. I found a few drafts of sake to be a very nice prelude to a dip in the outside onsen in the evening.

For us, staying at Madokano Mori was something of an extravagance, but after two luxurious days and nights it felt like money well spent.

My partner and I treated ourselves to a one-night stay at this luxurious boutique hotel in Hakone. We experienced exactly the updated traditional Japanese ambiance we were looking for. The private onsen in our room was stunning, especially at night. Additionally, the public onsen, located near the woods, was exceptional; we had it all to ourselves, adding to the exclusive feel. The dinner served in our private dining room was one of the best we had in Japan, and the service was impeccable. We stayed in the 'Sumire' room/suite and highly recommend it. The price of a stay at this hotel is not low, but the service and all the amenities make it proportionate to the overall experience.

Nestled at the top of the hill in Gora lies this beautiful inn. Tasteful decor greets you almost as warmly as the staff. Kind, gentle and peaceful can best describe them. Nothing was too difficult and they made it clear through their actions that our comfort and enjoyment were paramount to them. The rooms are lively and well appointed with beautiful views. We had a private outdoor onsen. And the dinners were positively delicious!

While it can be a little troublesome to get to, the effort is well worth it. This place is amazing! The staff are all angels, and the rooms are fantastic. And the BEDS! SOOOO comfortable!! I slept like a rock! My boyfriend said they were the most comfortable beds out of all the places we stayed! The kaiseki dinner was absolutely delicious, and so was the breakfast. It was also snowing when I woke up, which just added to the magic of our stay, as I haven't seen snow since I was a child! Taking a morning soak in the balcony tub as I enjoyed watching the snow fall was a highlight.

After a grueling few hours of travel from Kyoto, we arrived at Gora Station on the Hakone Tozan railway. A few minutes later, a black Mercedes-Benz van arrived and whisked us up the mountain to Madoka no Mori. Inside the van, the same serene soundtrack that plays in the hotel lounge played to set the mood. Nice touch!

Check in
We were immediately greeted by the staff and sat down at a table in the lounge where we were served coffee and a delicious little rice cake. Once we completed the paperwork, we were shown up to our room (#311 EBINE) where a light snack and tea were waiting for us.

The Room
The room was spacious and split into a living/vanity area and bedroom with two gigantic plush beds placed adjacent to each other. The private open-air bath on the patio overlooks a beautiful patch of trees and the valley. At dawn, we were treated to an incredible sight as the sun set into the mountains above us. Sitting in the bath with a glass of beer. Can't get that out of my head.

Accomodations
A comfy set of yukata and pajamas were provided for us both. The Tamanohada bath products smelled incredible. We got the fig scent in our room but the gardenia scent in the public onsen was my favorite.

Dinner & Breakfast
We had dinner in the dining room on the basement floor. Every course was an absolute hit. The presentation was exquisite... and they know it too. The lighting overhead is perfect for taking pictures of their delicious food. Breakfast was served at 8am in the same room.

Spa
After a few grueling days of travel, we needed a massage. Luckily Madoka no Mori has an on-site spa. We made an appointment for an 80-min full body oil massage (~20,000 JPY). The hotel also offer in-room shiatsu massages as well. The massage was pure bliss and really worked out the kinks in my shoulders and tired legs. Coupled with a dip in the hot springs, we had the best sleep of the entire trip.

Overall, we loved our stay. Hope to return to Hakone and stay at Madoka no Mori once again.

We had a very pleasant and relaxing one-night stay at Madokano Mori in the Noshungiku room. It was large with more than enough space for two people and included a private dining area, living area, bedroom, and a private hot springs bath.

The service was excellent and attentive. The food, both dinner and breakfast, were both delicious and beautiful. Plus they were very accommodating to my food allergy as I notified them in advance.

But of course the best part of the stay was the private hot spring bath on our balcony overlooking the mountains. It was peaceful and relaxing and was the highlight of the trip to Hakone.

At the end of our stay, the drove us to the Gora station which was extremely convenient.

TIP: When we arrived, we followed the advice of a fellow TripAdvisor member and walked to Madokano Mori's sister hotel, Gora Hanaoug (right outside of the Sounzan station), to ask for a ride Madokano Mori. This was a real life saver as there were no taxis around and the walk would have been long and confusing. Alternatively, you can call Madokano Mori to ask them to pick you up from the station.

A very different experience to staying in a regular hotel, which i suppose was the whole reason for going ! If you want the whole wearing the Japanese robe and eating pure Japanese kasakei food in the prviacy of your own dining room , being very quiet and being in bed by 9.30 then this is for you. A once in a lifetime experience which i personally would recommend for one night . I was so glad we stayed, as for someone not from Japan it is kind of how you imagined Japan to be or used to be . I cant really compare it to other similar properties as i have not visited others . I was not disappointed and was exactly the experience i was hoping for with the usual high standards of service . My only disappointment was that i didn't get to meet Blofeld and no one said ' we are expecting you Mr Bond ' !

Staying here was an absolute dream! Gorgeous design, serene and peaceful atmosphere, generous hosts that provided the highest quality and attention to detail in everything- from the amazing food, gorgeous onsen overlooking the forest, luxurious toiletries. If you are a lover of design (think mid-century Japanese minamalism) and a lover of fine food this is the place for you. Awesome onsen, bedrock bath (horizontal sauna), gardens. The staff are super friendly and professional. It is a dream of mine to come back if I am lucky enough to return to Japan. Congratulations and thank you to the generous owners and team for this impeccable ryokan.

From the very first moment we felt like in heaven. Luxury 6seater picked us up from the Gora Station, warm welcome at the ryokan followed by very smooth check-in. Everybody knows the hospitality level in Japan is one of the highest in the world but at Madoka No Mori they managed to push the bar really to the top. Lovely spacious room with wooden bathtub on the balcony, amazing breakfasts and dinners, relaxing outdoor onsen with milky way above you and fantastic service everywhere. If you travel from Tokyo, take Shinkansen to Odawara (just 35min) and then either taxi or the local train to Gora Station. Views from Lake Ashi on Mt. Fuji are breathtaking.

My mom and I just had a wonderful one night stay at this ryokan recommended by our friends in San Francisco! We were exhausted from our long train and car ride from Kyoto, but upon arriving and entering the vicinity, my mom and felt welcomed, cared for, and pampered until the moment they waved us good bye after dropping us off exactly where we had to go the next day. This was our very first ryokan experience coming from our stays at two fabulous Ritz properties in Japan and at Hoshinoya Kyoto and I have to admit, I was initially a bit nervous that we would have been already too spoiled by their 5-Star hotel amenities and facilities. However, this hotel which perfectly blended modern decor/amenities (I.e. stand-alone sink, illys espresso machine, plush beds, etc) without losing its integrity as a ryokan and essentially allowing us to experience what traditional vacations were like back when the above were not available yet. We especially loved the table with seats covered atop a Japanese heat-pad and covered in Asian style blankets as well as the wooden open air bath deck that’s available for all rooms in the building.

Highlights
-The public bath: the bath area here boasts multiple outdoor onsen pools of various temperatures, allowing you to enjoy onsen looking at the stars (or snowflakes in our case!). I was also very impressed by the spacious and flawlessly clean and well-manned vanity and shower stations, overall elevating our bath experience here greatly.

-The very personalized attendance to your needs during your stay that felt continuous as the same server/room attendant who came too check you in will serve all your meals as well

-The courteous, warm staff who all spoke good -enough English

-Separate dining facility apart outside of your room

-The lobby lounge area that’s half open air where you get to enjoy the nature while being served Tea/Coffee

-The luxurious Shiseido skin care products (lotions, soaps, etc) available in your room and in public bath

-The very high-tech massage chairs!! Best free massage chairs ever

Lowlights
Honestly not too many, but if anything, probably that it was 1) a bit further out from Odawara station and therefore expensive to get to via taxi when it was snowing 2) not reaching out personally to confirm arrival details after your reservations in order to work out your arrival time/means and 3) the food relative to other places we’ve eaten at - Hoshinoya Kyoto and Gora Kara - were not as delectable. However, the Hida beef, the sashimi course and the breakfast porridge were very impressive yummy.

Overall, the level of hospitality, the well-maintenance of its luxurious facilities, the awesome public onsen, the open air bath available in every room, the personalized service and attendance including your transfer to/from this ryokan make this place a top-notch ryokan in Hakone that delivers its 5-Stars hospitality experience without needing iPad docked rooms or a gym staffed with Power Plate machines. I’d take the superb massage chairs over a gym any day anyway ;)
