This was the most unique part of our 2-week Japan vacation. Hakone National Park was beautiful, and Rikyuan was wonderful. The staff was so friendly and their attention to detail made this experience perfect. We wore kimonos and slippers all around the hotel (which is fairly small, allowing for a really personal experience). The dinner was fabulous, it was so many unique, delicious, and fresh dishes. It was served to us into our room, course by course. This was my first time visiting an onsen, and we got to try both the public and private ones (which you just have to write your name down to reserve a time slot). This was a great experience. Breakfast was in a common dining room, and was such a treat! Also so many little dishes in beautiful pottery. I had read other reviews about smoky smells, which I didn’t have a problem with even though I am usually sensitive to that.

Booking a Ryokan in Hakone was the hardest part of our trip planning. Too many options, long distances and little English translations made what should be excited somewhat stressful. On top of that I have tattoos and was afraid of paying for some thing as couldn't use to boot.

Rikyuan, was the perfect choice. We were a little scared walking up to an area that looked like a suburban business section after taking the bus by hilly country side and beautiful rivers. But, from the moment we walked in the door we forgot where we were or what time it was; we were transported to a calm traditional Japanese getaway. Our room was fit with a small personal (fit for one person) Onsen and we had access to two private onsens (fits 2-4). We managed to spend 3 hours in different tubs, wear kimonos, Yukatus, and we're served a 10 course meal in our room and opted for the reasonably priced shiatsu massage in our beds. The only issue I had is that my honeymoon will have a very hard time topping this. Breakfast in the morning and off to a new sight, this was a tranquil pause in time we won't soon forget.

On another note to other stressed tattooed people - I had zero issues and everyone was very welcoming.

The traditional Japanese rooms are very nice, and so are the hot spring baths (both the small one in the room and larger ones outside). The extensive dinner was also a great experience. The location is not very beautiful (next to a large parking place) but by bus it is easy to reach Lake Ashi, Gotenba, etc. The wifi worked not very well.

We spent one night here and opted for the full Ryokan experience with a private onsen. It was very relaxing, especially after all of the miles we put on our legs touring Japan. The private onsen was clean and relaxing to use. The dinner and breakfast were all traditional and a great experience to try some traditional cuisine we otherwise would not have ordered on our own. Getting here was a bit challenging due to some buses and trains not running when we went (Dec 2019) but that was due to storm damage. The person who looked after us (the Nepalese woman, sorry forgot her name!) was wonderful and took great care of us.

Overall, we were less than blown away with this small Riokan. Private bathroom was a bonus but having no view to the outside was disappointing. The private onsen looked out to a fenced in gravel garden. The common onsen available to guests was lovely in a much more beautiful setting. I did not feel that we got our value with this inn. The breakfast was very nice. Our first greeter was not very helpful but the next day, a new staff member named Nishino was wonderful.

Service was the best I ever had, I can t rememberer the name of the young man looking after us but he was the kindest person ever. We fell very welcome from the 1st minute. The Ryokan is beautiful, exactly what I hoped for, not one of those multi floors Ryokan with elevator. This is a traditional house, with a few rooms, decoration is top notch. Rooms are beautiful and the room outdoor onsen outside is amazing. The private onsen is definitely worth trying, georgeous feel ! Honestly after our cold day walking around Hakone everything fell amazing and special. Breakfast was actually good and big, however we were a bit disappointed on the dinner. Beware that they serve healthy meals based on the Monks diet, no meat, raw fish only and veggies. For our taste and overall cost we expected to be blown away with flavours which wasn't the case (maybe 2-3 dish were great in flavours out of the 11). I m sure some would love the simplicity but we did another cheaper Ryokan in our trip where the food was seriously outstanding and impressive in terms of richness of flavours. If food for you is a major criteria of the experience you might want to try somewhere else but for the rest it has been the best experience / service I had in my life. Oh and the futons are great, I slept so so well

Accessible to tourists 2 minutes from bus stop. Clean rooms. Loved the private onsen. If you have time try the round one that you have to reserve for. It has a different vibe. Very polite Nakai. Chef was accomodating as well and asked us about how the food was. It was delicious. It really was filling even with small portions. Feels really private. Overall good experience.

My partner and I were after a traditional ryokan experience to relax after a week spent in Tokyo. We’re so glad we found Rikyuan. From the moment we arrived the staff went above and beyond to make out stay memorable.

We booked a room with a private onsen and being able to relax in this at the end of the day was blissful. The traditional style beds were very comfortable but the highlight was the food. Dinner was served in our room and breakfast in the dining room with a huge array of delish dishes.

The bus stop was a two minute walk around the corner and this gave us easy access to the sights around Hakone.

We only wish we could have stayed longer.

We were searching for a traditional ryokan with private outdoor onsens in an off-the-beaten path area with very good food and not too exorbitant prices and we hit the jackpot with Rikyuan. While we had to take a train to Odawara and then a regional bus to Daigatake (I believe that was the name of our stop), it was a quick 3 min. walk from the bus stop to the ryokan. We sprung for a room with a private onsen and it was worth every penny. The dinners and breakfasts were AMAZING with so much food we were bursting every night and morning. There's not a ton around but you can hop back on that bus to get to other attractions. You can also walk to the Lalique museum, some botanical gardens, and another museum. There's not much else within walking distance but we welcomed the serenity after the hustle and bustle of tokyo and kyoto. The onsen in the room was amazing. There are also 2 public ones you can book to use privately. The water truly does feel like it has magical properties and we bathed several times a day. Warning for some: 1) you are sleeping on tatami mats and sitting on the floor for meals in the traditional Japanese manner 2) the food can be slightly adventurous and seafood heavy but it is all delicious 3) in the rooms with private outdoor onsens the shower is outside as well. All in all, we were thrilled with this place. Wouldn't recommend for those with children.

Hi Marco P, Can't answer about the size of the private bath but I would assume they would fit at least 2 people. The shared ones that you can book are different sizes, one fits 2 and the other maybe 4. The indoor one you can visit any time and when other people are in there is larger again. The water comes from hot springs. Enjoy!
