Hotel's Favourite

I typically prefer the smaller more intimate ryokan such as the ones in Gero where we were treated like kings. Hakone Kowakien Tenyu resort is part of a large hotel chain built to accomodate the masses, but the experience was still fantastic.

The infinity pool (6th fl rotenboro) was the main draw. Nothing like contemplating mid life crisis while soaking in mineral bath and staring into the distant mountains, all the while nebulizing cold fresh air. The infinity pool prob fits 50-70 peeps depending on how intimate you want to be. 5th flt rotenboro paled in comparison though still quite enjoyable. Male & female guests can enjoy these 2 onsens but on alternate days.

Our standard room was spacious & palatial compared to anything in Tokyo. It feautured 2 double beds, spacious restroom area, a real closet..gulp. Private onsen came in the form of a metal tub on the balcony. The Amenities are of modern design and included a good size safe to keep valuables.

Dinners were keiseki experience of artful presentations, they were very good but may not be for western palates. Make sure you notify them of food allergies at the start since there will be shrimps, lobsters, etc. You have to pay extra for drinks even for juices, it was odd. Breakfast was my fav & the buffet included drinks. i usually drain a few glasses of French champaigne first before browsing. The variety & array of items were impressive, that's where the advantage of a large resort chain became evident. On the flip side it can be crowded & bubbly during peak BF hour esp if guests over endulged on champaigne, wink.

Lobby was huge & inviting with mix of couches, lounge chairs & even cute bean bag chairs. They serve cold juices for guets looking to rehydrate post onsen. The coffee machine is avail 24/7 for jetlaggers. On the outside balcony there are wicker chairs and more bean bag chairs facing the mountain.

Staff were friendly & spoke adequate English. Hotel minivans provided rides to & from Hakone station. We took the H bus to Motohakone (lake ashi, tori gate, pirate ship), the bus stop is at the kowakien Yunessen resort below us. On the return trip however we were instructed to take bus #2.

Overall very satisfied stay & worth the splurge esp with the weak JPY.

Mom and I really enjoyed the stay at Tenyu and everything was per the pictures on their website and the overall experience was just top notch. Starting from them showing you to your room and introducing their facilities and the food was great too. Dinner was an elaborate kaiseki course and the buffet breakfast offered both international and japanese food. We're talking about grilled snow crab (half peeled!) for breakfast. Of course, the onsen was amazing and having to experience both the infinity pool and outdoor onsen facing a waterfall, no words could do it justice. Of course, you could also enjoy the hot spring right in the comfort of your own room. This stay was worth every dollar spent! Location wise, it's a little bit secluded if you're not driving but the hotel offers free shuttle service from the Gora train station and we also took a bus directly to the Gotemba Premium Outlets right outside the hotel.

Unfortunately it was snowing when we arrived in Hakone which destroyed our touring plans. The resort is very big and was bustling like a train station at check in. Check in experience was ok and our escort to the room was very sweet and pleasant. All the staff was very friendly and efficient.
Our room overlooked the parking lot and was categorized as a Mountain View room. Perhaps if the weather was better it may have been.
We moved to a garden/forest view room which was much prettier view. All the trees were covered in snow and you can hear the hot springs and waterfalls when you open the balcony door. Way better than the other room.
When we went for dinner we were shown to a dark back room, rather than a table that was in the main restaurant overlooking very pretty gardens. We objected and were seated at a window table. Insist on a window or main restaurant table for your meals.
Dinner was a 7 course (small servings) Japanese meal, which is not for all western tourists. Other than the Sashimi and beef dishes, the rest were tasteless!
Breakfast was a western style buffet served on a tray. It was pretty good!

Room is functional and comfortable with lovely Tatami mats and futon beds. Very clean and great traditional clothing to wear around the resort. Shower is like a closet and similar in size to a cruise ship shower.
Hot spring bath on balcony was great and very enjoyable. Did not use the public Onsen.

The hotel is VERY expensive for what you get.

This hotel is one of the best we have ever stayed in across decades of international travel, and that is no exaggeration. Every aspect of the service provided was professional, courteous and swift, from the hotel shuttle to simple requests like extra pillows. The room is massive, and with a high floor you have an amazing private hot spring bath on your balcony to watch the stars in total privacy. Large beds, luxurious trappings (cakes in the room are divine), excellent aircon and most wonderfully, incredible sound proofing. The food is incomparable, with the breakfast the most diverse and high quality of any we have enjoyed, and the evening dining session sensitively calibrated to your palate; my wife is a vegetarian and I can’t stand seafood, yet they produced sumptuous multi-course feasts that blew us away. The location is ideal to navigate the Hakone loop, and there is a public onsen with entertaining water features around the corner if you have kids. I could write an essay on the superlatives of this venue, but for now I will limit myself to providing my unreserved recommendation for anyone considering a stay.

When we arrived there was a warm welcome with them quickly unloading suitcases and putting on the carts to deliver to rooms. And then it went downhill

Staff have very limited English
You might as well not bother asking because you can never get a straight answer. Very frustrating

They gave you two pages. A rudimentary map and basic info of the facilities and onsen rules
They need to elaborate more on the amenities, how to go around town, etc

I was told there are no taxis in the morning. Told to take the bus. Never heard of taxi service only working in the afternoon only.
I was handed a bus schedule in Japanese and off you go to go figure out how to get to the shrine
There is a bus stop beside the ryokan
Bus driver goes no no go to bus terminal and points down the hill
Sad part is that I had to ask a tourist of where to go and was more helpful then the staff

There is also a free shuttle. We were not told about that. I only happened to know about it when the staff person handed me the bus schedule and it had a shuttle schedule too
FYI about the Gora station pick up. We specifically asked the staff where to wait for pick up at the station. They just kept saying at the station. It turns out that the shuttle pick up is behind the actual station so we missed the pick up.

Restaurants here are expensive. I have tried many restaurants around the world and I really cannot say that the price tag associated here was really worth it. Unfortunately, as you are on top of a hill in a sleepy town with limited transportation, you are stuck with what is available
We tried the shubashuba which is just hot pot. I would probably just stick with the cheaper main dining hall on 5F. Presentation is excellent. Flavors were ok

The paper given to me said there was free transportation to the shuba shuba restaurant. Nope. It was again another map and go find the place yourself. You would think for 174$ ppn price tag for the dinner that they would actually show you physically.
You had to follow these tiny signs to the restaurant. These signs seem to disappear as soon as you hit the supermarket

The rooms were nice and clean The amenities in the room were good. The outdoor tub could do a makeover though.

Staff were polite on the whole.
I wish that there were more multi lingual staff persons.
Frustrating with the laissez-faire attitude when asking for help

Would I go back? Rooms were big and clean but I think I would try another place if I came back with better solutions to my questions

It was truly our pleasure to welcome you to Hakone Kowakien Ten-Yu. Thank you so much for taking the time to write to us. It is wonderful to find out that you have been satisfied with the room you stayed in. However, we are sorry to know that English skills of reception staff did not live up to your expectation. We appreciate your comments about the information and will improve the information of the service in English so that it is easier for all guests to understand. Since Hakone is a mountain area, the number of taxis is limited, so if you need a taxi, you need to make a reservation in advance. Our staff should have explained about it. We apologize for any inconvenience caused. Your feedback is very much appreciated and surely helps us to improve our service. We hope to have another opportunity to welcome you again at TEN-YU and to exceed your expectations. Hakone Kowakien TEN-YU

My family of 4 stayed in 2 Superior Room with Open-air Bath, and our reservation included the "Gorgeous Kiseki Taste of Abalone and Lobster Dinner" and buffet breakfast.

Hakone Tenyu is amazing. Throughout the entire stay, we got to consistently experience the WOW factor (the staff and service, the views, the room, the onsens, the garden at night, the dining/food, the buffet breakfast, the sunset, the free ice cream :) .... all WOW, WOW, WOW)

The 5th and 6th floor onsens were fantastic. Very quiet and clean with 2 types of lockers (small ones for your phone/keys outside the change room area; larger ones in the change room area for your clothes). The facilities were well stocked with towels (large and small), soap, shampoos, hair dryers and brush, skin care products, hair care products. The 5th floor had a beautiful outdoor onsen with a waterfall and the 6th floor had the amazing outdoor infinity pool.

After a trek to get to the hotel given its location it was far busier than we expected with a wait to check in in reception. Room was nice with space and the balcony overlooking the gardens with a bath tub fed directly by hot springs a nice touch. The beds were comfortable but the rest of the room a little tired - the shower felt like I was camping with plastic walls and floor and far too cramped given the rest of the amenities it felt out of place. That said the room was quiet and we enjoyed relaxing before dinner.

We had a dinner and breakfast included rate booked by our travel agent. While the entry greeters were nice we were sat at a table next to each other staring at a window (it’s night time so only a reflection of us as the view) which was rather odd. Food was preset and not the quality expected and had elsewhere in Japan which was a real let down. The sushi pre frozen and chewy for example. You also had to visit a buffet area for your rice and later dessert. They only offered coffee not even green tea on the buffet too! While the staff were nice and made it feel like an experience i would rather have been given a choice of food (appreciating we had a preset dinner) and it have been higher quality. Breakfast was a huge disappointment- cramped space and people all over the place with their trays trying to navigate the poorly laid out buffet. Worse than school dinners!. Not a relaxing spa type experience!!

The free shuttle bus stops in lots of places to Gora and takes ages, there’s a bus you can take at the bottom of the car park that’s public and is faster to be honest. Also a bus put on by the hotel up to the ropeway start would have been more helpful as it’s far closer than Gora and you don’t then have to get the cable car up.

Given the weather and the Ropeway being closed we decided to check out a day early and not subject ourselves to the same dinner format and breakfast chaos. Real shame as I’m sure it could be a great hotel/ or was.

This is a lovely hotel with staff who always do their best to meet your needs. The superior rooms are a good size with nice toiletries and have traditional items that can be worn around the hotel. There are single sex onsens available all day, every day. In the foyer you can get a variety of fruit teas or coffee. A special coin is given by front of house for the ice cream vending machine. Breakfast is a vast buffet of continental and Japanese items.

We stayed at this lovely hotel for only one night, but how we wished we could have stayed longer! From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we felt completely looked after. The reception staff and concierge were very helpful, and spoke sufficient English so that everything was clear to us. The hotel is beautifully located amongst the hills, and is a very short journey to Sounzan where you can take the ropeway to Togendai Port (where you can take the pirate ship across the lake). The bathtub on the balcony is a great touch, but it is still worth visiting the Onsen, which includes a sauna and a hot outdoor infinity pool. I also loved wearing my Yukata all day (including to dinner). The staff clearly take hygiene seriously and the facilities were very clean.

We opted to eat the Kaiseki multi-course dinner in the restaurant. It was a fun experience; we definitely recommend it if you haven't tried Kaiseki elsewhere. The breakfast was also (by far) the best we had in Japan.

Some of the reviews for this place had me a bit worried in advance of our stay, but the actual experience was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Firstly, we were worried about getting there, but the hotel happily arranged very reasonably priced taxis (2k per head) to and from the station, so that wasn't a problem at all. Also the staff spoke perfectly good English.
The hotel itself is set in a fantastically beautiful location and is absolutely beautiful. The room was spacious and well appointed, I'd say it could do with a lick of paint in spots but given that the experience was sooo wonderful and the price not insane, I can let that go. I loved that they provided face care products in the room and makeup remover. The in room onsen was obviously fab. The bar downstairs was great, the cocktails were really good and really reasonably priced, plus the outlook onto the beautifully lit up garden were amazing.
I'm vegetarian (no fish) and Japan was a bit difficult in this regard, but the staff noted this for us from the beginning and made sure I was well catered for with varied menus both nights. I particularly appreciated the creativity of the vegetarian sashimi course. The one thing I'd say is that the lighting could afford to be dimmed a bit. Also, everyone wears pyjamas to dinner, so don't make my mistake dressing up in heels haha. The breakfast was huge and well-appointed. If you need anything extra there's a nearby family mart, and they provide free ice cream tokens + free flowing iced tea.
It's a great location from which to go hiking if you're after a slightly more active holiday, then spend the evening at the onsen. The local buses are great and you pay in cash for them.
I also had a massage at the spa which was wonderful and reasonably priced (13k yen).
Overall, we had a totally blissful time. I'd love to come back in winter.
Also, I don't know why but google calls this a 3* hotel, they should fix that as it is decidedly 5*.

I agree with previous comments. I am not aware of what the superior room looks like although I did see them on the lower floors. I was very happy with my room with a view overlooking the roaring stream and bush.

It doesn't usually snow around that area in February, but it really depends on the year. Since it's in the mountain, it might. For Onsen, you can enter with a towel covering your body and go to an individual washing area, but you can't bring a towel wrapping around your body and get into hot bath. Also, don't forget to wash your body and hair before you get into hot bath. (It's a rule and etiquette)
