After an exceptional stay at Hakone's top rated Ryokan Gora Byakudan, Mr. Uchida, the assistant manager who currently works there recommended Gen Hakone Gora as a second alternative since we were unable to book an additional night due to its popularity. We truly appreciated his exceptional level of service and his cander for catering to our needs and were completely confident that Gen Hakone, a sister company of Gora Byakudan would emulate the same level of warmth and customer service experience if we were to stay there. As ryokan addicts who have literally stayed in all of the luxury 5 star ryokans within the Hakone/Atami/Izu area, Gen Hakone is now the first on our best ryokan list. Our number one luxury getaway, our ideal home away from home.

Katosan, one of their staff members left us with such a lasting impression throughout our stay with her exceptional level of hospitality and professional demeanor, she now is also one of the many reasons why we have frequented this establishment and is planning to continue to do so from here on forward.

FACILITY:

The facility itself is very mindful of their clienteles from seniors to the physically challenged. With barrier-free rooms, ease of accessibility to the public baths, wheelchair lifts and elevators provided, we can bring our grandmother free of sentiments of anxiety or discomfort.

AMENITY:

Unique and well-thought out amenities such as chilled tangerines which are provided to soothe your skin after a detox session in their sauna and large misty and perfectly temperature controlled bathing area. Dr. Air massage chairs, ice popsicles, detox water, and nostalgic sweet water beverage which were placed in the resting area generated another element of surprise. Public baths were equipped with large and small towels, water dispenser, tooth brush, a wide range of shampoo and conditioners to choose from and every essential bathing necessities that you could ask for. Rooms were provided with everything from complimentary beverages, delicious sencha teas, Balmuda kettles, aromatic high quality shampoos and conditioners, chilled desserts, large outdoor bathtub with heavenly views of the Gora mountains, high tech dryers, and the list goes on. The lobby area offered complimentary beverages and a unique selection of teas from Yuzu sencha to Honey Ceylon throughout the day and from 8pm alcoholic beverages from Whisky, shochu, craft beer and small treats were generously layed out in bar area.

ROOMS:

The rooms were exceptionally large, approximately 115m/ 1300 sq ft, one of the biggest rooms that we have ever stayed in, especially through Hakone's standards. The open concept room were equipped with many seating options from comfortable dining room area that can seat approximately 10 people, L shaped sofa, comfy double beds, multiple lighting capabilities to customize the ambiance to your likings, wall fixtures with numerous outlets placed in convenient locations, a showering area with rainfall shower option, a spectacular veranda and kakenagashi ofuro tub facing majestic views of the Hakone mountainside. Although large in size, the room was inviting, perfectly lit and extremely comfortable. Both my mother and I slept like babies throughout our stay here.

FOOD:

Spectacular. The quality and attention to detail of Chef Osamu's cooking surpassed our expectations. Kaiseki cuisine with a creative twist that places an element of surprise that comes with each and every dish. From the best asari miso soup with the depth of the dashi permeating your tongue, wagyu beef that instantaneously dissipates leaving its natural sweetness, and the rice was by far the best that we have ever tasted.

Unlike many other cookie cutter franchised establishments that we have been to, we want to thank the owner, assistant manager Mr. Uchida, Katosan and the rest of the team for creating a ryokan that truly embodies the notion and the soul of hospitality.
