Hotel is just about 5 - 10 minutes from the JR Train station, however, it's all uphill. So better to get the hotels phone number before coming to Gora, so when you are at the train station, you can call them for a free shuttle pick up at the station. (cost is 10yen to make call from public phone).

Hotel is a bit older, but for Japan, the rooms were HUGE. Actually, even compared to US standards, the room was very big. Had a balcony with a little bit of a view. When checking in, they give you a traditional Japanese robe (forgot the correct Japanese name for it) to wear while you are at the hotel, cool experience.

Not many places open in the evening for dinner so expect to get stuck eating at the hotel restaurant where the least expensive dinner runs about $40 / head. Or just next to the hotel is a convenience store that you can buy some Noodles, or sandwiches if you're on a budget.

Hotel I just next to Gora Park which was a beautiful garden with blooming flowers and a water fountain in the center of the park. Nice place to hang out and relax for a bit.

Downside of this hotel was there is NO INTERNET connection. So for those of us (you) who definitely need to be connected to the outside world while on vacation, this place won't work out for you.

If visiting Gora, buy a 1, 2, or 3 day FREE PASS while back in Odawara station. This will give you unlimited access to all public transportation and even all tourist attractions while in Hakone. So, it's worth buying.

We booked the western room with open-air bath and mountain view. The room was huge and comes with plenty of amenities that is expected of it. It is abit on the pricey side, even though it was on offer. Paid about 30,000Yen for 1 night inclusive of full-boarding, ie. dinner and breakfast.

It is a pretty steep walk up to the hotel from Gora station. Don't be deceived by the look on google map. If you arrive at the hotel from 3pm-6pm, there is a free shuttle service to pick you up. But you will need to contact the hotel upon arrival or make prior reservations on the time of arrival for the shuttle to come pick you up. This service is a per-basis only and there are no fixed timed departures from Gora station. If you arrive earlier or later than the specified time, you can take the Hakone ropeway up 1 station and walk over to the hotel from there. This would save you the tiring climb up the hill and costly taxi fare.

There is also a service from the hotel to Gora station in the morning for guests checking out. The service starts at 9.40am at 20 minutes intervals for 3 trips. If you can wait for the timing, it is a convenient and fuss free method of getting back to Gora station.

The command of english of the staff is very basic and they cater mainly to local tourists. However, they do make an effort to communicate and help us with our inquires. English maps and instructions are also available so that helps with the language barrier.

This hotel is located near the Gora station but in a hard slope. However a trick is to take the cable car from the station for one stop and then you are just at the level of the hote, so it is pretty convenient to visit the Hakone arel. The hotel is not recent but in good condition. The rooms are very large by Japanese standards, and usual by western standards. This hotel is expensive if you are not taking the full board. But it is really a good deal with the full board. Then you get excellent Japanese breakfast and dinner. The dinner has many dishes (more than 10) including raw fish, cooked fish, meat, vegetables. rice, soup, etc.
If you expect steak with french fries, you should probably look elsewhere...
Breakfast is the same, do not expect bacon and eggs...

The room was very basic. If you are looking for something nice, look elsewhere. Their shuttle service also didn't work for us. We reached Gora station at 1 pm and called for shuttle, and they said the shuttle service hadn't started for the day. On our way back too at around 9 am, they said they couldn't drop us. The hotel is 10 min walk from station and is uphill, so we landed up taking cabs, which was minimum care of around 700 yen. We didn't eat at the hotel as it was very expensive, ate at Gyoza Center which was 8-10 min walk from the hotel. The onsen was open till 1 am, which was great. The wifi only works in the lobby. There was a small convenience store couple min away from the hotel. Not a lot of dining options around.

It started with us calling 3 times in advance to the hotel asking for the shuttle service they offer on the web site to come and pick us up.
After 20 min of waiting we took a 3 min taxi to the hotel.
The front desk were nothing but impolite.
Over the time of our visit we were able to receive only very few answers and service, struggling with front desk that doesn't speak any English.

Breakfast is 100% Japanese. So a great experience to those looking for it. With a 3 year old, it was difficult.

Bottom line, the hotel is aimed for Japanese guests.
Being in Japan for a month, I suggest you choose a different hotel that knows to cater both Japanese and western guests.

Service needs to improve.

Hotel is outdated.

Rooms are large and comfortable.
No wifi in rooms.

Hotel recommends only Japanese restaurants in town. They are not aware of any others.
Check my recommendation for Itoh Dininning, and Meissesn restaurant. Two wonderful Japanese-western fusions.

We booked the Merveille Hakone Gora for the full ryokan experience and we are very happy that we did.

The staff are friendly and hospitable, both at the check-in desk and in the restaurant. We chose to include both dinner and breakfast with our room and they didn't disappoint. We stayed for two nights and two different dinners/ breakfasts were offered for both nights.

Our room was huge- a bathroom, a tatami room (which could house two traditional beds), two single beds and a wooden bathtub on the balcony (with privacy screening). The bathtub was perfect for a soak after a long day of sightseeing.

There is a convenience store across the road to pick up any drinks and snacks, and the usual vending machines on each floor plus hot springs in the basement.

We felt that we got value for money, given that we travelled in Autumn, and the view to the mountains is beautiful, as the leaves are starting to change.

The location of the hotel is very convenient, being right at the end of the Hakone Tozan line and the beginning of the Hakone cable car. The hotel is at the top of a steep hill, if you are travelling with heavy baggage or a mobility impaired person, you can call the hotel pick up service (between 3.00pm and 6.00pm) OR catch the cable car to the first station (Koen-Shimo) and walk from there, as it is a level walk with a small uphill as you get to the hotel.

Upon arrival in Gora, we realized that this is a place created for tourists only and that we would not have a true Japanese experience. We also realized immediately (straight away when entering the hotel lobby) that this hotel was very run down and surely not worth the 150€/night we had booked. So we tried to shorten our stay to only 1 Night (instead of 3 that we had booked), but it was not possible, the cancellation fee was 100%. After pleeing and bedding, the hotel agreed that we would only need to pay 2 nights out of Goodwill. Then we saw the room. It was the most disgusting room we have ever seen when travelling. So run down! So old. And worst of all, it smelled so badly. Situated on the ground floor with a balcony facing the backyard, we would not even have been able to leave the window open at night. We complained about this terrible room and were granted an upgrade to a superior room (because we would be paying 2 Nights for 1 night stay). That room was very nice, with a private Bathtub on the Balcony. But all in all, 300€ for such a shabby hotel in a village where you don‘t get anything to eat after 7pm (we arrived around 7pm and could not find a place to eat, so we bought some instant noodle soups at the supermarket to have in the hotel room...). We find it is a really bad Price-quality rate and we would never ever return there!

Seems that was a grand hotel a long time ago but they didn’t upgrade it allot
The onsen is nice but they don’t have outside spots
If you are not Japanese don’t include the breakfast in your booking cause later there is no way that they give you back
For breakfast you have fish rice soup and that’s it
The hotel staff is really kind
There is a huuuuugeeeeeeeeeeeeee hill to arrive to the hotel so better call the hotel transport from the station cause with suitcases there is no way you are going to make it
Don’t miss the open air museum next to the hotel

The hotel is conveniently located in Hakone Gora to access the ropeway and enjoy the views of mt Fuji, owakudani etc. Rooms are very spacious but felt a bit dark.

However, we had a sense that in the autumn it’s better to stay around Hakone Yumoto station to enjoy the hot springs.

Hotel is located on a steep slope as others have pointed out but thanks to info provided by others, I took the cable car from Gora station and it is a easy walk from the 1st cable car stop.
Hotel is a little dated but otherwise clean and rooms are of good size. Booked a Japanese room and a double room. Downside is that they do not offer help to lay out your futons and its a DIY. (Other inns usually will provide this service).
Booked package with meals and dinner was a good spread, likewise for breakfast.
Many other guest were local Japanese, so guess this hotel have their regulars.
Decent size supermarket just round the corner and a few restaurants nearby.

Generally no but the Japanese are so polite they probably won't say anything to stop you - if they don't see them before you go in.
