It's kind of a quirky little hotel that looks like it's maybe past its heyday. But we both enjoyed our stay very much. For the price, the option to stay in a traditional Japanese room was very attractive. The breakfast in the morning was varied and good. The onsen at the hotel wasn't bad (read: not great, but not horrible either); I'd recommend instead checking out the Tenzen buplic bath nearby- which lives up to its reputation on this site.

This delightful Yuokan was a place I could have stayed for a week instead of the two nights designated by our tour.
This hotel does yuokan in style! I just loved everything about it but especially the rooms and the way they magically switched from day setting to night setting whilst we dined! The attention to detail with the tea settings was a joy. Don't be afraid of futon sleep the futons were soft and comfortable provided you find a place for any dodgy hips! The view and sound of the waterfall from ?all? the rooms is a joy. Unfortunately I was in a room which had previously had a heavy smoker -so double check for a smokeless one, but for me I just got used to it.- sadly couldn't open the widows! The hot-water kettles took some learning but hey where else can you set to 3 temperatures for 'just-right' brewing of your green teas? Take care not to trip up the small steps into the bed/sitting room from the small inner 'porch' or to and from the bathroom and toilet areas. Unfortunately I forgot once after a long touring day and tripped headlong - time NOT to take the Onsen but go directly to sleep! But the onsen experience is an absolute joy and in this hotel one can take inside or go to the covered outside area which I much preferred - overlooking the river and waterfall. Hakone itself is hilly so not particularly close to anything - definitely need transport but well worth it. The banquet experience for our tour group was a joy and the staff so sweetly friendly despite language gaps. Hotel shop tiny but if you must you'd find a small gift or two.
One of the best things about this hotel was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff.
I'm a large single and required 2 futons side by side but that was no problem - except they slide apart during the night... Overall the most impressive of all my Japanese hotel experiences

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights as part of a small group.

From a westerner's point of view one may call this "a unique style of accommodation" with tatami mat floors and authentic cuisine and futon bedding. We are aged 69 and 70 and found the accommodation and bedding very comfortable and we enjoyed our stay immensely. No shoes on the tatami matting.ie indoors. Slippers ans socks are provided for moving around the guesthouse.

Hot spring baths are available, both indoor and outdoor, and house kimonos were provided and changed daily.

Japanese food is served which was of the highest quality.

There is a shower/bath adjoining each room, but this is quite exposed to the elements and when we were there it was quite cold and uninviting so the shower and hot spring baths were the way to go.

The location overlooks a river and waterfall (NB not all rooms) and was very quiet.
The guesthouse is some distance from the nearest from the nearest railway station but there is a small bus that I believe would be available to collect guests (see photo).

The staff were very obliging and courteous.

The temperature in our room was well regulated with a very good A/C. Lighting is also able to be controlled remotely and can be dimmed.

I would highly recommend this guesthouse/hotel as a great place to stay in the Hakone area.

visited on a tour. Room was excellent with view straight into a cherry blossom tree in bloom. Room had been updated. meals were excellent, being 2 traditional style Japanese meals. Staff spoke English and were very helpful and cheerful. Room was 2 single bed and Tatami room with Futon. loved sitting at the coffee table having a wine and looking at the blossom. Dressed every night in the traditional yukata. great fun

A good Japanese-style hotel is suitable for the family who travels by car,
in front of a river, a small dam and waterfall is seen and heard.
the parking is valet service. They have a good hot spring bath with clear water.
It's a little far from HAKONE YUMOTO station. You should use a shuttle bus.

Stayed in 2 room suite "Tsubaki" with private outdoor hot springs bath. Two rooms separated by hallway and 1 full bath with toilet just adjacent to bathroom so if someone taking a bath can have privacy yet toilet available for others. Recommend for family reunions.

We stayed here for two nights in a traditional room. The room was for Japanese standards very big. There is a free sauna in the hotel next to some great onsen baths (indoor and outdoor) getting to the hotel was easy with an shuttle bus. It is nog near a city centre so you are dependent of the hotel kitchen. We only took breakfast and that was ok.

Check in was done as a group and was quick and easy.
This hotel is a traditional Japanese Inn so the rooms are not like western hotel rooms. We all had Japanese style rooms. The main room is covered with tatami mats and the seating is on the floor. The futon was made up while we were eating dinner. Yukata's were supplied in all rooms and worn by all of us for our included dinners.
Wifi was only accessible from the lounge area.
If you stay at this hotel, you should take a communal bath.
I was in 2 minds about taking a bath before I visited here but decided that "when in Rome" and I'm so glad that I did. The ritual before bathing is very "cleansing/relaxing". I thought I would be embarrassed, bathing in the nude with women that I did not know but the bath itself is so warming and relaxing that the nudity just isn't a consideration.

We stayed in 2 traditional Japanese style rooms as we were a group of 6 friends. The hotel is gorgeous. The hot pools/ spa area is amazing and the all you can eat buffet that was included in our room price was to die for.

Amazing value for money, great service and very comfortable. Both our rooms were on the 3rd floor with views of the waterfall. Very romantic!

I would absolutely recommend this hotel and Hakone to all my friends and family that visit Japan.

This is an authentic Japanese hotel with authentic cusine. The room is large with tatami mat floor, entry area to leave shoes to change into slippers to wear on the mat floor and throught hotel, case area with robe, room with seats and a table with tea facilities hot water from small urn, flat screen tv. Separate balcony room with small fridge to sit and take in the view of the stream, waterfall and tree filled mountainside. Late afternoon the table is moved and futon mattress added to floor, extra mattress and bedding in a cupboard, and suggest adding another mattress as we did. There is a bathroom with a seperate shower room with a window with views outside. Within the hotel it is encourage to wear the traditional kimono and slippers. Different sizes are available but for a more personal colourful choice you can hire them at reception for 500yen. Free internet is available in the lobby area. There is also a public hot spring bath facility that has both indoor and outdoor pools. Males and females are segregated as you must bath naked. You store clothing/towels in a room next to the bath and sit on a stool to wash before entering and after leaving the bath. The water is extremely hot as they are unable to regulate the temperature, if its too hot move to the outside bath as in the cool air it is very invigorating and soothing. A must try. This is a nice hotel but as its nestled on the mountainside there is not much around the hotel.
