On a shingle cove overlooking a tiny harbor, at the heart of a UNESCO Geopark, ISANA Resort benefits from a modern and comfortable design with a natural hot spring on site. The mild climate, the immensity of the sea and an exquisite natural environment combine to create a truly exclusive, authentic and refined setting. This is from this exceptional coastal environment that ISANA draws its name: "Whale", "Big Fish" in ancient Japanese. Taken in reference to a unique and caring animal respected in Japanese culture With only 10 rooms, we aim to provide a personal and convivial experience along with memorable meals and great service. The resort benefits from two public natural hot spring baths, one restaurant and an array of activities around the hotel from golf to pottery, hiking, sailing and diving.

We wanted a few days out of Tokyo to spend time with our son and his partner who live there. We were delighted that we chose Isana Resort.

Having travelled a fair amount in Japan, we have found some places a little 'inaccessible'. Isana gives the authentic Japanese experience in a way that is enjoyable. As an example, the food is delicious gourmet food, a beautiful fusion of French and traditional Japanese, but (unlike some places we have stayed), we understood what we were eating and how to eat it.

The owners and staff (Cecile, Hide and Tiffany) were attentive, courteous and respectful; they could not have been more welcoming. The rooms were clean and comfortable. We chose the suite so we could have a sitting area and were delighted with the stunning coastal view and private onsen on the balcony. The western style bed was very comfortable, unlike futons which may be more authentic but we don't find so comfortable.

We spent much of our time snoozing, such was the relaxing atmosphere, but also enjoyed walk down the stunning coastline.

In summary, we were delighted to have chosen the Isana Resort and highly recommend it to others.

My Japanese friend recommended me this beautiful boutique hotel by the sea. It opened this year and I thought it should be noted and recommended particularly for the following two unusual qualities for small hotels in Japan.
Besides their fantastic French dinner (optional)and tasty breakfast, this resort is staffed by the friendly and multi lingual employees!
Besides Japanese, they can service in English, French and Chinese!!
Unless we stay at large chain hotels, it is very rare for foreign tourists to be fully serviced in languages besides Japanese.

Secondly each room has open hot spring private bath. Many foreign guests feel a bit uncomfortable in public big bath where we bathe without swimsuits and we ended up using small hotel style bath in the room that is normally not a real hot spring water connected. This hotel’s bath is real “onsen” hot spring water overflowing abundantly even in the private bath at the balcony and can bathe any time of the day!
This hotel also offers complimentary shuttle service from nearby train station.
I had fun visiting UNESCO site by Jyogasaki bridge that is 10 minutes pleasant walk from the hotel.

Isana Resort melds the aesthetics and flavors of traditional and modern Japan. Although you may come for the relaxing soak, you’ll be lured back — even if from afar in your mind — by meals meticulously prepared and presented in ryokan style, but exploring influences of France and flavors of the West.

The views are beautiful, the waters soothing, and the service impeccable. Isana Resort offers a restorative balm to visitors weary of work or worried about global crises.

Our large room with a lovely view of Futo Bay featured its own rotemburo, an open-air bath. Those concerned about maintaining personal space can enjoy a private soak in constantly refreshed hot water.

We couldn't pass up the chance to relax in the larger communal indoor bath, which can be reserved for private use. Hot water cascades down a waterfall into the tub, and plate glass windows look out onto the ocean.

If you rise by dawn, you can saunter down to Futo Harbor to watch fishermen unload and auction their catch. By hiking south along the Jogasaki Coast, you can explore the UNESCO GeoPark, including the Kadowaki Suspension Bridge.

At dinner, we savored a succession of flavors and textures: cold-smoked Fuji salmon on crispy toast with sardine aioli. Angel shrimp cake with tomato butter sauce that was almost too beautiful to eat, but too tempting to ignore. Sawara (Japanese Spanish mackerel) and scallop in a clam consomme. Sendai beef with ponzu sauce, mushroom-stuffed shishito pepper. Oh, and the Zaku sake!

I could have spent hours deconstructing my dinner, had I taken better notes.

The staff happily accommodated (if notified in advance) allergies and preference.

Breakfast featured more taste sensations, highlighted by the perfect soft-boiled egg in dashi (soup stock), sashimi of takabe (yellow-striped butterfish) and shiira (mahi-mahi) hauled in by Futo fishermen that morning, house-made sourdough bread — possibly the best that I, a San Francisco native, have eaten — and house-made yogurt with fruit.

If you ever need a last meal, or perhaps the first to open your eyes to a new way of eating and being, visit Isana.
