This Ryokan is a perfect winter getaway. You have the feeling of being in a very isolated place and yet pampered with wonderful food, service and a restful, serene ambience. We had the Western style room with an outdoor onsen which had a great view of the stream and forest. We tried both the French and Japanese menus. They were...

Very nice Japanese experience however very cold in winter and our bathroom has no heating at all which is not exactly what you expect for such hotels. Food and service was great. So I would recommend this hotel for fall, spring or summer but not for winter times...

This is the only ryokan we've visited so we have no comparison but we'd certainly go back. The location is superb, with rushing streams on each side of the building so the view is gorgeous. We had a traditional Japanese room which was huge and really comfortable. I was a bit worried about sleeping on a futon but it was...

I have stayed in over 25 ryokans in Japan over the last 7 years, ranging from basic rooms to eye-watering expensive luxurious ryokans upwards of USD $800 a night. So I was eagerly anticipating my one-night stay at Myojinkan, and was left rather disappointed. I arrived at the ryokan at 6:00pm, past the usual check-in time so the entrance and...

Probably at the more luxurious end of ryokans, but a beautiful mix of traditional and modern. More like a cross between a luxury hotel and a traditional ryokan. This was the first ryokan visit for our family of four with two kids under 15. Very friendly and welcoming if a little formal. Food in both Japanese and French restaurants is...

If you want to experience a real Japanese onsen in extraordinary luxurious surroundings, in the middle of the mountain only about one hour bus from Matsumoto station, then this is the perfect spot. Me and my friends had the best 20 hours at the hotel with delicious food and spa overload. The staff was very kind and helpful. The best...

For all the negative reviews this place is getting, I don't believe it is warranted. From a western perspective (United States) it probably doesn't live up to Ritz-Carlton expectations, but from a purely Japanese perspective, this is among the best rural accommodations you will find in Japan. The remote location in the Japanese Alps gives one the feeling of the...

We got a room with a private hot tub / bath, and it was very much worth it (though we enjoyed the public baths as well). The room was fantastic, as was the service at both restaurants. We would love to go back at some point in the future.

Matsumoto was our last stop in Japan before Tokyo. We were a bit hesitant because it was quite a ways out of town, but were very happy we chose it. It was a very nice mix of Western and Japanese, more a very attractive and comfortable hotel than a ryokan (maybe 40-some rooms on several floors). We were happy with...

Onsen hotel with a modern touch in the restaurant. It is located in a lovely area with the mountains and streams. Most rejuvenating for the weary traveller. It is a little out of the way but I understand the hotel provides shuttle service to the train station.
