Facilities: The ryokan is tastefully appointed with what appears to be authentic pieces. Our Japanese style room that was thoughtfully laid out, with ample space for a sitting area even when the bedding was laid out. The toilet and washroom were separate, and nicely hidden from the rest of the room. The bath included a washing area and a deep furo (soaking tub).
Food: We had breakfast on both of the morning we were there. We also ordered the kaiseki dinner. We concur with the thoughts of a previous reviewer. One of these days, this establishment will earn a Michelin star. The each dish of the kaiseki was creatively prepared, thoughtfully presently, and simply delicious. This dining experience was comparable to the one we had at Le Bernardin in New York.
Location: Ryokusone feels isolated, but it really is not. Kenrokuen, Kanazawa Castle, the 21st Century Museum and the DT Suzuki are all with a nice fifteen to twenty minute walk. From any of these spots, you can easily get a bus to Higashichaya and other attractions for 200 yen. And when you return to the ryokan, you really are in a different world.
Service: Highest ratings! We were treated like special guests from the time we walked in the front door, to the moment we entered to taxi cab to leave. The staff are attentive and thoughtful. Iriyama-san speaks several languages, and answered any questions we had. The Master Chef even helped carry our luggage to the cab when we left. And we will long remember the lovely and gracious Ayumi Sato, who seemed to always be there, answered our every question, and made us feel welcome and comfortable in every way she could..
These two days at the Ryokusone, peacefully placed in green surrounding of a hill and a park (with a Shinto shrine), were definitely a if not *the* highlight of our 2-week vacation in Japan! A very big thank-you goes to Mr. Iriyama, who works for the ryokan: With his profound knowledge of Kanazawa, the region and Japan in general, he answered all our questions (yes, in English ;-) and gave us many tips on what to do and what to see and even helped us greatly and showed us around during his off-duty hours to make the Ryokusone and Kanazawa a very memorable stay we will never forget - Thank you so much Mr. Iriyama-san!
With the two charming and helpful ladies working at the ryokan, the Ryokusone should be at the top of the list of all visitors to Japan!
The staff were extremely helpful and ever-willing to please, though their command of English can be rudimentary at times. Nonetheless, communication was seldom a problem here.
The property itself used to be the Mayor's personal residence, so it sits on a quiet hilltop secluded from the hustle and bustle of the city - this can be a boon to those seeking some peace & quiet, but it will mean that getting to most of the city's attractions will require a taxi.
Make sure you make a reservation for a "Kaiseki" dinner at the property's restaurant. The 9-course degustation was easily the best meal we had in Kanazawa.
The room was wonderful. We had not stayed in a ryokan before and found the whole experience fantastic.
The Japanese breakfasts were sensational. Mr Iriyama, manager of the ryokan, was very personable (as were all the staff) and went out of his way to explain some of the cultural aspects of Japan.
We had one dinner at the ryokan and although reasonably expensive it is worth it for the sensational cultural experience. It was truly memorable.
Ryokusone is an easy 15 minute walk from Kenroku-en Gardens and Kanazawa Castle. If you are in town it is best to get a taxi back to Ryokusone and costs about 1500 yen. Make sure you have the address in Japanese as most of the drivers don't speak much English.
Overall we highly recommend Ryokusone to anyone who is interested in an authentic Japanese experience.
We had 3 people in our party, so we booked two rooms - one of them being the top one at Ryokusone - the Special Room Yamaboushi. While it was pretty nice, there wasn't anything amazing about it. It was a 2-story room (the bedroom is upstairs) with steep stairs, and was moderately room but doesn't scream "spacious luxury."
Food was the highlight. They don't serve meals in the rooms (unfortunately - this is our preference) but the food they had on offer was terrific. That said, given its price one would expect a great Japanese meal, and it did not disappoint.
A few other nits to pick. The bath is not a real onsen bath, and they do not offer laundry services.
Ryokusone is not a "destination" ryokan; I would not recommend anyone go out of their way just to stay here. However, if you're already planning to be in the area, and want a decent place to stay with great food (and not much more), and have the financial means to manage it, Ryokusone is a decent choice.
