Leave the Kanazawa JR station by the “East Gate”. Walk down the concourse past the “German Bakery” and at the end leave to your right. Head straight out. (If you leave from the main entrance with the large glass and metal frame lattice, turn left) As you walk, to your left you will see “Forus Kanazawa” shopping mall (restaurants on the 6th floor). Pass a “Starbucks” on the corner. Continue past the “Hotel Kanazawa”. At the corner with the “LA-MIEUR” shop, cross straight over toward the sign “DIAN” and continue up “Higashi-odori” (do not turn down the main road to your left). Continue walking a short block till you see a lane to your left and a red tile façade in front of you with the sign “Coffee Lounge Tomato House”. You will know if you have reached the correct place if you look to your right and see across the street the “Hotel Econa”, “Yamazaki” and “Am Apart & Mansion Coin Laundry”. When you look up the lane you will see the sign “OKA Hotel”. Walk up the lane. The building you want will be to your right and have gray tiles. The entrance to the lobby is midway up the drive at your right. The is no sign in the Roman alphabet.
The Central Hotel (west building with red tile façade) faces a main street and has reception up stairs on the second floor. The building has the name “Central Hotel” at the very top, but you cannot see the sign unless you have walked past it and looked back and way up.
Pleasant, obliging staff. Rooms ending in 07 are the largest, but next to the elevators. Even though they are recessed back from the corridor (so perhaps noise might not be a problem), we declined one of these rooms and requested another (smaller) room father down the corridor. The room had adequate facilities, was light, cheery and clean, and, for us, adequate as a base for sightseeing.
Even though the 07 rooms were the most spacious, we did not want to risk the elevator noise (they make a ding-dong sound when they arrive at the floor) and the coming and going of other guests. If you are less noise sensitive, take one of the 07 rooms as they definitely have more space than the others.
Both the east and west hotel buildings had a computer with Internet connection in the lobby for guest use. If you need ice, go to the bar in the west (other) building and ask. Someone at reception will give you a bucket of ice to take back to your room.
Note the 10 a.m. checkout time and the additional charges after that. Also note the 3 p.m. earliest check-in.
Soundproofing from the street was good. We did not hear noise from the night roadwork going on outside. The room did admit sound from the corridor, but it did not bother us as other guests were well behaved.
You can find a convenience store father down Higashi-odori, a short distance past the pedestrian overpass bridge you can see in the distance.
The “German Bakery” in the JR train station has delicious sweet and savory pastries which you can have for breakfast or as a snack when travelling. Collect a tray and a pair of tongs at the entrance to the shop, place what you want to buy on the tray, and take both the tray and the tongs to the cashier. The cashier will wrap and bag your selection and accept payment.
We saw the hotel sign on top of the older red brick building when arriving at the bus terminal so it was not too difficult to locate. There was an English speaking receptionist when we were there. Will recommend the hotel as the close proximity to the bus terminal was most convenient.
We got a room with a rear view of a large shopping complex. The window partially opens (to prevent people jumping out?) but just outside is a factory and we were worried about smoke coming up so we never really opened it. The room has a themostat so you can make the room as cold or warm as you like.
PROS
* Foot massager + electronic foot massager is available with the room plus extra towels to dry your feet. These are cleaned daily along with housekeeping.
* Good high view where we were at
* Excellent location, close to the station and bus stops and the "Forus" shopping complex adjacent the station
* Friendly and helpful staff
* Internet enabled PC available in the lobby for public use
* Great value for money
CONS
* No wifi (not many japanese hotels come with wifi though) and only 1 publically available PC (since the hotel is small, we didn't notice anyone else ever using it)
* Staying in a room close to the elevator means you hear the ding when the elevator stops on your floor
* No BBC / English subbed television channels (was painful since the earthquake/tsunami happened on the day we were here and we couldn't get any english news)
* Relatively hard to find the place initially, can almost describe the location as a back alley
* People smoking in the lobby and lobby tends to smell like japanese bbq at night due to the restaurant in the next room to the lobby. No real issue since you don't hang out in the lobby unless you're using the PC there.
* The key you get activates electricity in the room, so you can't leave food in the fridge when you leave to go out
The main attractions in Kanazawa are accessible via the "bus loop" which is essentially a one-way bus circuit that stops at all the major attractions. I'd suggest buying the daily bus loop pass for 500 yen instead of paying 200 yen each time you get off the bus.
Overall I'd stay here again if the price is as good as it was for us, but I wouldn't recommend staying more than 2 nights here as most of the attractions/shopping/nightlife can be covered in a few days.
We (non-smoker) booked a small smokers room, 7.000 JPY per night.
+ central location
+ attentive staff (knocked at the door and ask for changing towels and cleaning the room)
+ fridge, TV, Wifi
- poor english skills
- room stank
room was quite small and old and poor sound proof but basic amenities were in place. i like the hotel public bath too; it was a bonus to me. it only has about 6 lockers so try to go when it's not so crowded (for me I often went near midnight) wifi didn't need any password which I found slightly worrying. other than that I enjoyed my stay very much. the karaoke place just beside the hotel was a plus for me too Haha
Check out at 10am is a bit early. We were scolded by the front desk
The bathroom is tinier than my bag pack.
Clean room but nothing unique or special.
Front desk clerk was friendly but the restaurant recommendation was pretty unimpressive.
Good inexpensive place to stay near the station
"As far as we could tell from the near zero English, there is only one size room, very small."Read full review
