We booked this after reading the many good reviews of the ryokan and it absolutely lived up to our expectations. The managers are wonderfully friendly and helpful and the rooms are nice sized, very comfortable and what you expect from a true ryokan. The hotel is also very quiet, just on a side street but very close to main tourist areas. As others have noted, the toilet and shower facilities are shared but if you’re OK with that, I would highly recommend Murutaya.

A real ryokan experience, nice tatami room, shared Japanese hot bath which was really relaxing after a long day of walking. It will give you a taste of traditional Japan. The owner, Yuichi, is also really nice.
Keep an eye out for the phone system at the reception which is more then 70 years old.

Traditional Japanese Ryokan, with futon on tatami, onsen, shared bathroom on floor. Air conditioning in the room. Cleanliness and courtesy at the highest level. I really lived the experience I wanted to live. Many restaurants in the surroundings. Highly recommended

Fabulous introduction to living in a Japanese way. 4 of us shared a room - which might be a challenge but there are smaller rooms. The baths are simply wonderfully hot. Have the Japanese breakfast rather than the European. It is spectacularly clean. Our room opened onto a small but beautiful Japanese garden.

This ryokan is a little gem. My room was very quiet. It was also very warm and comfortable. Location is fantastic. Bath and toilet is shared. It’s ver affordable. I was able to obtain my 500 yen pass from her. My only suggestion is that they educate Chinese guests on the tradition of japanese bathing!

The best thing about Murataya is its location. It is situated right in the middle of the city and great access to food places and attractions. 10 minutes walk to Kenrokuen, Nagamachi, or the Nishi Chaya districts. Also just a short stroll to the main Katamachi area to hop on to the circular bus route going around Kanazawa city.

Murata-ya has very friendly people running the place and you feel like you are on a family stay. The rooms and other facilities are very clean and constantly refreshed by the staff. At a very reasonable cost, you get Japanese styled rooms with futon beds and tatami flooring. The Japanese breakfast set is worth every yen that you pay for, again having that homecooked quality to it. They have English instructions posted all around the place to help foreign visitors to get acquainted to Japanese ryokan etiquette.

English speaking staff who are super friendly. Traditional style Ryokan which is situation a stones throw away from the main shopping mall and walking distance to the shrines, old merchant town, and ninja district. Room However does not come with anything aside from the room (no fridge) and toilets and bathroom is a shared facility which isn’t too bothersome. They also have a traditional style Japanese hot bath or shower to use. I would definitely stay here again without hesitation

We stayed here for our family's spring vacation trip to Kanazawa. Murataya is a delightful traditional ryokan located in a quiet corner near the nightlife district. The inn is old-style with cozy wood construction with rooms surrounding a relaxing central garden. In fact, the room they gave us opens out to the garden -- a pleasant surprise. Some people may prefer to have a toilet and bath / shower in their guest room instead of shared facilities like at Murataya, but for the price and the convenient location, we were extremely pleased.
Plus there were nice touches like fresh ikebana flowers displayed throughout the inn.
And best of all, when we headed out to find a restaurant for dinner, the owner ran to catch up with us and personally escorted us to places popular with the locals -- Such great service!
We will definitely be back!

We only stayed here for 1 night but it was such a lovely place to stay. I cannot recommend it enough. The welcome was so courteous and all the people there were lovely. Nothing was too much for them. The rooms were so calm and peaceful. Ours was downstairs and overlooked the small central garden. Everything was spotless. As mentioned elsewhere, bathrooms are shared but we never met the other guests. We tried the bath/Onsen which was hotter than we expected but so relaxing. A beautiful oasis on our holiday in japan.

I just loved staying 2 nights in this family-run, traditional Ryokan. The location is excellent. The family who run it are friendly and helpful and it feels more like staying in a private home. They give guests a quirky, informative mud-map of local places to visit, including excellent restaurant recommendations. Breakfast is either western or Japanese style and was freshly prepared, tasty and generous. Rooms are traditional tatami-style with futons and the bath is communal (one for men and one for women). It was a short walk from my room to the toilet.
