There are many reasons to go to Kanazawa, for us it was the Kenroku-en Gardens. And there are many hotels to choose from, but the Ryokan Asadaya seemed special—and it was.
What made it special?
Asadaya is located in walking distance of the Kanazawa Castle Park and the Kenroku-en Gardens as well as other sights. It’s right across from the fabulous and bustling Omi-cho Market, but when one enters the beautiful old building one is immediately transported into an atmosphere that combines warmth and tranquility. The rooms, baths, and appointments are traditional, beautiful, comfortable, and spacious. Meals at Asadaya are memorable in every way. We loved the focus on regional mushrooms, vegetables, fish, and duck prepared with deep culinary understanding and artistry. The presentation of the dishes made one want to know more about the local craftspeople and their wares and traditions.
The skilled people at Ryokan Asadaya pull it all together. The building and staff work together to create a lovely realm that feels timeless and relaxing.
And one gets to enjoy one the top three gardens in Japan.

Looking out the windows of Asadaya, you’d never suspect you are in a large city. From the second you are greeted, time just seems to slow down. My wife and I are two very loud people, personality-wise, but the politeness and reverence of the staff is infectious - you can’t help but slow down as well. From the incredible culinary offerings, to the on-site onsen (including a private suite if you want to reserve it with your partner), to the accommodations themselves, I can’t praise this place enough. Put it on your list.

outstanding service is immediately noticeable from the moment you enter. right after we entered, we were immediately greeted by the cheerful okami-san and an attendant. the ryokan is about a 10-15 min walk from the JR station and across the street from omicho morning market. we dropped off our suitcases in the morning before walking to all the sightseeing areas. check-in is in a beautiful tea room. our nakai-san (yasuno) studied english for a year in buffalo, ny, so we had a grand time with my broken conversational jpns and her very good english. there are only 5 guest rooms here and they really make guests feel special. after i booked our room online, it said occupancy was full but there was no sign of any other guests around. the ryokan is updated traditional, not contemporary. the guest room is quite large and has a separate sitting area. the shower room has a ceiling unit which can be used as a sauna (or drying clothes). there is a family bath which didn't smell funky at all. meals were served in a different room (which also is a guest room w/o private bath). the food is spectacular, probably the best-executed ryokan food we have had. flavors were subtle, delicious and beautiful. when they learned we were celebrating a special event, they added celebratory touches to our meal decorations and also included an extra celebratory dish. this is the only ryokan i've been to where they actually set up the futon as a single bed for couples (they used a "king" size fitted sheet over two sets of futon) and the futon was super thick, like mattress-style. this place isn't like western luxury but guests are definitely made to feel very welcome. location is convenient too; about 15-20min walk to the samurai quarters and maybe 25-30min to kenrokuen which is very beautiful.

We wanted to experience one traditional ryokan during our month in Japan, and we could not have made a better choice than Asadaya. Our welcome was gracious and following a tea service we were shown to our tatami room. We had just spent a week in a western-style hotel in Tokyo, and this room could not have been more different. When the door closed, we sat on the floor staring at each other in our simple suite, and my husband said "Are you sure this was a good idea?"
At that moment, I wasn't sure. Neither of us had experienced such simple accommodations before and we're not bed and breakfast types. But we changed our minds quickly when we allowed the peaceful zen of the place to take over. We fell in love with every single thing about our experience: our beautiful and simple suite, the comfortable beds (made extra long for two tall guys), wearing yukatas, enjoying the family bath (we never even used the in-room shower), afternoon tea, and the over-the-top kaiseke meals served on the most gorgeous dinnerware you'll ever see. It's hard to put into words the level of personal and respectful service we experienced throughout our three night stay. By the time we checked out, we felt like honored guests and close family, both at the same time.
As we continued our travels through Japan, we met several natives of Kanazawa who live in other cities. Each of them knew of Asadaya by reputation, and each said the same thing: "Asadaya is famous in Japan. Asadaya is well-known as one of the finest ryokans. You're so lucky to have stayed there." Indeed, we were fortunate to experience this traditional ryokan experience. We'll be forever be grateful to sixteenth generation owner Qta, his mom Mrs. Asada, and everyone who hosted and cared for us. We're happy to have made their friendships and to experienced Japan through their hospitality.
Tips: Don't miss the D.T. Suzuki Museum, one of the finest pieces of contemporary architecture on the planet and an equal of Mies' Barcelona Pavilion. If you're in town long enough, be sure to visit one of Qta's restaurants. We enjoyed phenomenal teppanyaki at Rokkakudo. Kanazawa is a wonderful small city. We highly recommend a multi-night stay to have the time to relax into it and enjoy all it has to offer.

The TripAdvisor ranking for this hotel is ridiculous. Asadaya is quite simply one of the best hotel experiences you could have anywhere in the world. Yes, it is expensive but the price includes a 10 course kaiseki meal, a marvelous breakfast, a private onsen and, most importantly, the best personalised service you could ever imagine.
Quintessential Japan.

Thank you very much for taking your time to share a review of your experience. It is wonderful to finish my day by reading your impressive review. We are so appreciate that you noticed what we care the most...personalized service. We used to have 37 rooms at same location with reasonable price but 40 years ago, we rebuilt it into 4 rooms luxury style in order to provide personalized service. Everything we asked during your stay such as food like/dislike, pillow choice, Yukata robe size are keeped as a repeaters record, so at your next visit, you won't have to tell us all over again. We all look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit to Japan.Thank you very much for staying at Asadaya. Thank you very much for your wonderful review. I have to start with Kanazawa itself which was a delightful surprise to us. A modern, beautiful city that has enclaves from centuries past within 50 yards. Asadaya, at 140 years, is one of the oldest ryokans in the city. Our room was lovely and put together in such a way that we felt we were in an isolated part of the country rather than the middle of a big city. In fact, during our whole stay, we had no idea if we were the only guests in the ryokan or not. The staff strives to make each guest feel like they are the only ones staying at the ryokan. The kaiseki both nights were extremely good, beautifully presented and delicious, including the tiger shrimp and clams we cooked ourselves on a hot stone! and the shabu shabu which we cooked ourselves in a paper pot (no kidding.) Breakfasts were also excellent. When the staff gathered outside to wave goodbye to us, it was one of those quintessential Japanese moments.

Our stay at Ryokan Asadaya was the highlight of our two weeks Japan trip. Excellence of service is achieved here and everything was close to perfection (the dinner, the breakfast, the sake, the shiatsu massage we got in our room, the family bath, etc).
If you want to spend a night at a ryokan to experience true japanese hospitability (and you should), this is the perfect place to find it. The only caveat will be that they don't have a natural onsen, but their family bath makes up for it. We are already planning our next trip to Japan and we'll make sure to spend more than one night in Kanazawa next time so we can properly enjoy this ryokan and the city.

Let me preface by saying that we stayed here a few years ago, and I didn't realize I have not written a review!
We came to Asadaya on a recommendation from a colleague. We were here in March, and it was very cold and snowing. The staff was superb, making sure that we were able to eat breakfast/dinner in different rooms. They were also very good at having us move around so we never actually saw any of the other guests - I don't know how they do it, but it was nice to feel very secluded from everything. We had a traditional room with a view of a small pretty Japanese garden outside. Meals were very good. We visited the local fish market that the chef buys his food at every day, it was a nice tour for us, even after Tsukiji. The staff at the hotel were very perceptive about our needs and the local weather, and offered rain boots for us with little warmers inside which we used to walk around the snowy, wet weather. Lovely town to visit as well.

A fabulous ryokan in the heart of Kanazawa. The owner and her staff were extremely welcoming and did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable. The room was very large and elegant, and had a small private garden in front of the window. Dinner and breakfast were served in another room, also with a great view on a private garden. The dinner was fantastic, Kaga style kaiseki cuisine with lots of local ingredients and fresh products. The private family bath was simple, but extremely enjoyable. Great breakfast as well - we went for Japanese style. Honestly, one of the best if not the best ryokan I have been to in Japan.

My husband and I spent the month of October touring Honshu. We stayed at 5 ryokans and Asadaya was the best, fulfilling all of our expectations about what a ryokan experience should be. We stayed two nights and hated to leave.
Asadaya is very traditional but still offers all of the modern amenities that you need including reliable fast Wi-Fi and an in-room safe. The decor and artwork are exquisite throughout the property, but what really sets it apart is the service. You are so well tended that you can't help but feel like a VIP. While everyone was delightful we especially enjoyed Naomi and Yuki, two lovely kimono-clad young ladies who assisted us during our stay. As others have commented, you never see any other guests, which leads to feelings of exclusivity and peacefulness.
There are only 5 rooms and we were assigned to Takao which features an elegant main room as well as a small sitting room overlooking a carefully tended garden. While Asadaya is located on a busy city street, while within the property you'd never know it, since every room overlooks a garden and we never heard any street noise. The futons were very comfortable with luxurious linens and you have a choice of different pillow types. We chose fluffy feather pillows. Our facilities included a bath room with a deep marble tub and a shower with excellent water flow. Toiletries were high quality and the hairdryer was amazing. I'm not sure how it differed from others but my hair never had so much volume.
As you'd expect at a ryokan of this caliber, the meals were excellent. The beauty of the serving pieces, which included fine Kutani ceramics, enhanced the artistic presentation of the food. The dinner kaiseki menus included appetizers, clear soup, sashimi, a steamed dish, deep fried dish, broiled dish, simmered dish, vinegared dish, rice dish, miso soup and dessert (usually fruit based). They offered a very good selection of sake as well and it was served in a clever and lovely decanter with a center chamber for ice to keep the sake chilled. Breakfasts were also very tasty and varied. Meals are always served in a different room so you get to enjoy various attractive rooms throughout the property.
There's a private bath room that you can reserve to enjoy a soak with your partner.
We had a wonderful, relaxing stay and can very highly recommend Asadaya!

Thank you very much for staying at Asadaya in October. Thank you very much for spending your time to write a review. This is very heart warming review that we can't help appreciating. Yes, we do care about artistic Deco, memorable dinner experience, fast Wi-Fi, pillow-bar, security and privacy. But more than those, hospitality is what we chersh the most. We are so glad to know you mentioned it and enjoyed your stay. I printed out and showed your review to Naomi and Yuki. They were so excited to see their names on Trip Advisor. We are all looking forward to seeing you again. Thank you very much again.
