We walked with two medium-sized suitcases from the main Kanazawa train station. The walk is pretty straight-forward and clear (follow the instructions from their website) and took about 20mins. When you arrive, please remember to take off your shoes before entering the main foyer area (slippers are provided if you wish). You are shown around the floors where the bathrooms and toilets are as well as to your room.
The room is sparse (as is normal in a Japanese Inn) with only two chairs and a table although a tv and phone were also in the room. You have a small wardrobe where a wash bag for men and women are given as well as a kimono which you are expected to wear in the room and walking around the Inn. The futon beds are in the cupboards and are made up for you by one of the staff members.
We had booked a traditional dinner (see pictures) with our night's stay and was served in our room - you get a lot of food! You have tempura, sea snails, miso soup, sashimi and other dishes. Drinks are not included. We paid just under 1000yen for one small bottle of sake and a non-alcoholic beer. The food was excellent.
We also had breakfast which is served in the breakfast room on the ground floor. When you check in you are asked to let them know if you want a Western or Japanese breakfast. We had one of each. The Japanese breakfast had fish, soup and other dishes. The western dish was hearty with cereal, pancakes, egg and bacon. We also had a choice of tea or coffee. The breakfast was also excellent.
The bath facilities are separate for men and women. They call them public and they really are public and not for the bashful! The showers are all open (no cubicles) as well as a hot bath - again open with no screens. You are provided with baskets to put your kimono and other personal items whilst you are in the shower/washroom. There weren't many people around when we were in the Ryokan so we only saw one other person in the shower room (in each of the male and female washrooms). There are separate basins available along one corridor on the first floor (open to all) for brushing teeth etc - we only saw one person walk past whilst we were using them so we didn't feel it was too public.
The room and Inn overall was very clean and tidy. We slept well on the futon and ate very well here.
The staff are friendly and spoke good English (not the older staff members though). You can leave your suitcase at the hotel after check in if you need to at no cost (we did to look around the market before we took our train to Kyoto). Just as we were leaving the staff gave us a token gift of a boxed set of chopsticks. It was a lovely touch (which we weren't expecting).
We definitely recommend this Ryokan for those who want to experience a very Japanese stay for a reasonable price.
Dinner was a feast. For the price, it was well over my expectations with many dishes done in different styles. Felt quite pampered the way it was served in the room with the dishes introduced. Breakfast was also substantial and I liked how coffee is served with a chocolate mousse sweet.
As for accessibility, the ryokan recommends taking a taxi from Kanazawa station and that cost me around 700 yen. The driver knew the ryokan right away so I didn't have to explain. Returning to the station is far easier since there is a bus stop on the next street. Just ensure the bus displays Kanazawa station (金沢駅) on its front. Also, despite what it appears on some maps, the Higashi Chaya district is a comfortable 10-15 minutes walk away. I recommend taking a slow stroll there after dinner. The quiet chaya district, in the evening, is one of those quintessential Japanese experience that should not be missed.
Must come back for our next stay.
Crix and friends from Taipei
We arrived early in the day and they were happy to hold our bags for us while we went out to explore. The older lady spoke enough english to get by but the two younger girls spoke good english and we didn't have any problems communicating with them. Our room was very basic (as is customary at a ryokan) but was comfortable and they had laid out yukatas for us to wear around the ryokan (also customary).
There are no toilets or bathrooms in the rooms but there is a ladies and gents onsen and toilets nearby on every floor. The food was served in our room that evening (you tell them when you want it when you arrive) and was a beautiful spread of seafood, chicken and vegetable dishes. Some dishes were challenging to our western palette but it was all perfectly prepared. They even made their version of fish and chips for us as a side dish which was lovely!
After dinner the girls laid out our beds for us. The futons were quite thin - they were the first I've slept on so I'm not sure if they are always that thin but they were a little bit uncomfortable.
The next morning we chose a traditional Japanese breakfast. They do offer western but we didn't try it. They were happy to keep our bags again and let us borrow bikes in the morning. Definitely do this! Bikes were brilliant and a great way to get around the city.
When we left they helped us to book a taxi and gave us a small gift. Such a lovely friendly family run business.
Rooms are simple but fine
Public bath and toilets, all Japanese style to immerse you in their culture
Location is good, very near the west entrance of the castle park, but not close to the station, like 25 min on foot
The food is great and plentyfull!' Choice of western or japaneese breakfast.
Location is perfect and close to all major sights!
One thing I have to say is that the dinner was EXCEPTIONAL. It is served between 6pm and 8pm and is brought to your room. I cannot begin to describe how amazing it was; typical Japanese local food to die for. There were lots of courses; lots of fresh fish, delicious breaded shrimp/chicken, tempura, stews, soup, seafood. The works. Be warned though, if you're the kind of person who is always going for the "Western" option then maybe you would be slightly out of your comfort zone but I have to say it was incredible and would recommend to everyone to try the Japanese menu. We stayed two nights and were totally blown away by what we were served on both nights. Breakfast is served downstairs near reception and I believe you can have a Western or Japanese option.
We had to leave very early on our check-out day and they arranged for a taxi to pick us up and take us to the airport bus stop. I'm sure had we been leaving later, they would have taken us there themselves but it was super early, too early to have the breakfast even. They gave us a set of lovely chopsticks as a leaving gift which was very nice!
Lovely, authentic, well-located ryokan.
The Ryokan is located within easy walking distance from the Kanazawa Castle Park, Kenrokuen Garden and Omicho Market. We took taxis to and from the JR Station (approx. 1,000 yens each way).
All staff at the Ryokan were very friendly and welcoming.
A nice, quiet location located near the market, castle and other attractions on the bus loop. We went during cherry blossom season and enjoyed Light Up our two nights there. Walking to the castle and Kenrokuen was a smart choice, as the dinner they serve is enormous. Our 8-year old LOVED every dish served (save for the sazae) and still raves about the dinners at Nakayasu Ryokan.
We had a room with a small adjoining bath, which was adequate for 2 adults, 1 child. I rarely bathed in-room, opting to use the public bath because it was more spacious. Loved the futon and pillows. I fought to use the more traditional, Japanese pillow.
The older gentleman who sometimes sits behind the desk wasn't too interested in guest interaction, but the rest of the staff was just lovely.
"If you get a room facing a competitor ryokan, you are likely to hear lots of tourist noise from the ryokan across the street."Read full review
