Friendly staffs, nice view and comfortable room. Oh, the hot springs are awesome!

We stayed in this hotel last year and again this year because of its location and the onsen. The hotel is on a hill so be warned that it is a hike to get back from the town. The staff are fantastic. The rooms are looking very tired and dated. They could do with an update. There is no laundry... More

Although billed as a ryokan, we felt that it was more of a hotel with some features of a ryokan. It's quite a large property so it lacks the intimacy you'd expect in an inn. Having said that it's still a very nice place to stay. We had a lovely room featuring a sizable private outdoor hot tub with extensive... More

We stayed there for two nights, checked in to a large corner room with futon bedding. Lets be honest, it's not my cup of tea. The back was sore after just one night but now i know! We had breakfast and dinner included and the presentation was fantastic and the atmosphere really nice. The location is really close to the... More

This ryokan provided a high quality ryokan experience and what we assumed to be traditional Japanese food, beautifully presented. However, the 'free' wifi comprised access to wifi for only four 15 minute sessions each day whilst in the public lounge which also serves as a smoking area and bar complete with television. There was no wifi signal on the bedrooms.

This is a good hotel in royokan style. The staff are incredibly helpful - as one comes to expect in Japan - and, although the hotel is somewhat faded and in need of refurbishment, its saving grace are the hot baths that are free accessible to all guests. The room was had on the 4th floor was somewhat cramped, but,... More

We enjoyed our stay at Hoshokaku. The staff were very helpful. The traditional pajamas t are very comfortable and fun to wear to breakfast. The rooms were comfortable and the location is good. There is a short, but somewhat steep hill to walk up. They provide shuttle service to the train station. We stayed four nights. There are plenty of... More

By the time we arrived to Hoshokaku we were already familiar with ryokan etiquette, wearing the yukatas and the like. However, this was the first place where we actually left our shoes at the entrance - all the hallways, even the elevators had tatami floors. We arrived a bit late, but were graciously welcomed, after a nice shuttle rice (our... More

I would hesitatingly give it 4 stars if I weren't sweating in my room, but that is because of the lobby being pretty and the staff. The room is like a motel room worthy of 2 stars. By far the best thing is the staff, who are ample and extremely polite. They took our bags from the cab straight to... More

We stayed on the fifth floor in a room with a private outdoor bath. It was gorgeous and relaxing. We were in and out of the tub, soaking in the water (and the scenery). And the meals were fantastic. Regarding the dinner menu, the Hida beef shabu shabu was particularly tender and flavorful. The breakfast included the traditional miso rice... More
