Good location, clean hotel. Pretty small room. We stayed in a twin room at £68/night (£34pp). Would try someplace else if I return to Takayama, as this place seems overpriced for what it is.
Location
Located within 30 seconds of takayama train and bus station. Lots of shops, restaurants and amenities nearby.
Transfer
You can literally walk to the hotel from Takayama within 30 seconds. No need for a cab.
Hotel Room
Very small, tight rooms. Served their purpose as a place to sleep but the hotel was expensive for this standard. With one suitcase and one hand luggage each, my friend and I struggled to find a space to put the luggage, let alone move around. The bathroom was also a squeeze but clean, with a smart toilet too. The shower was hot and powerful enough.
Bed
Japanese pillows seem to have gravel inside them, but luckily they also provide regular, soft pillows. However, like a previous reviewer, I suspect they don't wash those pillowcases (smell of sweat on them), so I switched mine from my japanese pillow. The bed was springy and I didn't sleep well, though my friend slept fine so I guess it was my bad luck.
Wifi
Reasonable speeds, no connection issues.
Service
Friendly staff. We were able to communicate with broken Japanese/English just fine. They were happy to help us out with bus times etc.
Breakfast
You choose a set meal (Western vs Japanese), which isn't really filling. Scrambled egg, toast, tea and some yoghurt. For the price of this breakfast I would have hoped for something more substantive. Having said that, it tasted good.
Other
There are computers in reception but it makes me sad to see that they've installed a coin operation box which charges you ¥100 for 10minutes use. My feeling is that this hotel is looking to skimp from each and every angle - small rooms, overpriced breakfast, pay per use computers. I would have expected at £68 per night that they would have at least kept some drinking water in the fridge! My advice would be to book EARLY and look elsewhere (most places sold out), but if you end up staying here it's clean and serves it's purpose.
Ok know for the negatives and please be assured we really try to find the best of everywhere we stay.
Traveling all through Japan we have never once come across such rude reception staff. First greeted by Maniko who never once smiled or even was was remotely interested. Given our one key card for the room and that was that. We did ask for two keys but was abuply advised , due to security reasons could not give two. We did explained that there were three of us and we needed two but again no. Once in the room settled down put air on and rested. About 4pm the room started to get really hot. Went down stair to be greeted by another staff member, just as rude and quickly advised 'no air on, only heat'. It was unbearable, so we tried to open the windows and my husband tried for about 10 minutes but couldn't.
I again go downstairs and was again greeted with the rolling eyes. He escorted me up to our room, and attempted to open the window, he couldn't, then with a mighty thump on the glass it opened, he turns around with the most condusanding tone, I told you they opened. My husband was so shocked he was stunned.
This attitude continued the whole two days.
Management really need to know this is going on because it gives the hotel the worst name in Japan. If you can book somewhere else do.
I need to say again that after 18 days traveling through Japan this is the worst we have come across.
On a positive note Takayama is an amazing place and had a great time meeting and talking to all the wonderful locals and the wonderful restaurants. Also the taxi drivers are amazing getting you around with there limited English and really go out of there way to help you out. Wish we could have stayed for another couple of days.
Fairly easy walk to all places of attractions located in the main town
When we arrived at the hotel, the check in counter seemed to be closed, as check in was from 2pm only. After calling out to a room behind the counter and waiting for a while, finally someone came out to assist us in letting us store our luggage before we can check in. The staff was very unfriendly.
Room was big enough for 3 of us, with sufficient luggage space.
