The location of the hotel in the very pleasant and quite interesting city of Takayma is unbeatable: almost directly opposite the train station, there from the 2nd floor. Floor with the escalator. The reception was friendly. We asked for a quiet room and got one in which we were disturbed all night by the hum of some fans or similar. We asked for soft beds and pillows - they are available in Japan !! - and got rock hard beds with hard pillows. The air conditioning was not individually controllable, so we thought we were in a sauna at night. The room otherwise clean - if you didn't look in the corners. The bathroom small as the whole room but clean. Breakfast was served Japanese-style on a tray. Very nice to look at, but low in content, the coffee was the thinnest on our 14 day trip in Japan. There seemed to be the same thing every morning - and then it's not so nice anymore.

The best thing, because we only stayed 2 nights, was its location, 100 meters from the train station and 150 meters from the bus station to go to the ShinOtaka Cable Car: excellent if you have large suitcases. The historic center is very close, walking about 700 meters. The very small room, 11 square meters, with a good shower and acceptable bed. The square meter in Japan is very expensive and that is why the smallness of 3* hotels is understandable, but we were in similar ones of 12 and 13 meters and those fewer meters are very noticeable. The room is uncomfortable. Breakfast was optional at a cost, but there are many cafes and restaurants around so we did not hire it. Service and cleanliness like all other Japanese hotels: excellent. There was a kind of jacuzzi included but due to lack of time we did not use it.

Synopsis (Overall + Value)

Good location, clean hotel. Pretty small room. We stayed in a twin room at £68/night (£34pp). Would try someplace else if I return to Takayama, as this place seems overpriced for what it is.

Location

Located within 30 seconds of takayama train and bus station. Lots of shops, restaurants and amenities nearby.

Transfer

You can literally walk to the hotel from Takayama within 30 seconds. No need for a cab.

Hotel Room

Very small, tight rooms. Served their purpose as a place to sleep but the hotel was expensive for this standard. With one suitcase and one hand luggage each, my friend and I struggled to find a space to put the luggage, let alone move around. The bathroom was also a squeeze but clean, with a smart toilet too. The shower was hot and powerful enough.

Bed

Japanese pillows seem to have gravel inside them, but luckily they also provide regular, soft pillows. However, like a previous reviewer, I suspect they don't wash those pillowcases (smell of sweat on them), so I switched mine from my japanese pillow. The bed was springy and I didn't sleep well, though my friend slept fine so I guess it was my bad luck.

Wifi

Reasonable speeds, no connection issues.

Service

Friendly staff. We were able to communicate with broken Japanese/English just fine. They were happy to help us out with bus times etc.

Breakfast

You choose a set meal (Western vs Japanese), which isn't really filling. Scrambled egg, toast, tea and some yoghurt. For the price of this breakfast I would have hoped for something more substantive. Having said that, it tasted good.

Other

There are computers in reception but it makes me sad to see that they've installed a coin operation box which charges you ¥100 for 10minutes use. My feeling is that this hotel is looking to skimp from each and every angle - small rooms, overpriced breakfast, pay per use computers. I would have expected at £68 per night that they would have at least kept some drinking water in the fridge! My advice would be to book EARLY and look elsewhere (most places sold out), but if you end up staying here it's clean and serves it's purpose.

The hotel has a nice location for exploring the city. The hotel is in the center of the city with lots of rest and very near the train station. The room is adequately sized with nice twin beds. However the hotel is old and just updated but the staff was very accommodating. the breakfast was adequate.

Only saving grace of this place is the location which is right across the JR station and bus terminal which we took a bus to Shirakawago. This is about the only hotel out of the 30 other hotels we stayed that provided no amenities and I guess very basic. The receptionist was an old man who wasn't at the desk when we checked in and had to holler before he waltz out and with no greeting or expression. Overall, can't complain much given the price and location but don't stay too long I guess. Oh and it's about a 10 min walk to the old town which is good too.

Do yourself a big favour and read all the negative reviews on this place as they are all accurate. And do yourself one more favour. DONT stay here!! A hostel would be a better choice and value than The Washington. Apart from free WiFi there are no other positives. Total rip off for what you receive. We paid $300 + AUD per night and no breakky included. Incredibly rude reception staff, beds like laying on concrete slab, only 1 pillow provided, air con is heating only, bathrooms look like something you would experience on a 2 star cruise ship, fridge didn't work, window wouldn't open, no amenities eg bar fitness centre One interesting comment - unlike other hotels they charge full room charge on arrival - I guess because they are worried people will realise how pathetic it is and walk out!!!?? In summary if I had the choice of sleeping on a park bench or staying at The Washington I would choose the bench...

I will start with the positives. Location good, room size good for three. Bathroom ok with all you need.

Ok know for the negatives and please be assured we really try to find the best of everywhere we stay.

Traveling all through Japan we have never once come across such rude reception staff. First greeted by Maniko who never once smiled or even was was remotely interested. Given our one key card for the room and that was that. We did ask for two keys but was abuply advised , due to security reasons could not give two. We did explained that there were three of us and we needed two but again no. Once in the room settled down put air on and rested. About 4pm the room started to get really hot. Went down stair to be greeted by another staff member, just as rude and quickly advised 'no air on, only heat'. It was unbearable, so we tried to open the windows and my husband tried for about 10 minutes but couldn't.

I again go downstairs and was again greeted with the rolling eyes. He escorted me up to our room, and attempted to open the window, he couldn't, then with a mighty thump on the glass it opened, he turns around with the most condusanding tone, I told you they opened. My husband was so shocked he was stunned.

This attitude continued the whole two days.

Management really need to know this is going on because it gives the hotel the worst name in Japan. If you can book somewhere else do.

I need to say again that after 18 days traveling through Japan this is the worst we have come across.

On a positive note Takayama is an amazing place and had a great time meeting and talking to all the wonderful locals and the wonderful restaurants. Also the taxi drivers are amazing getting you around with there limited English and really go out of there way to help you out. Wish we could have stayed for another couple of days.

Decent hotel stay as its located at a convenient location, opposite of the station and bus terminal. Surprised to see that most people have had feedback about the lukewarm reception - it's certainly something that falls short of what I've experienced in other hotels but I guess I can overlook this.
Fairly easy walk to all places of attractions located in the main town

This hotel is conveniently located opposite the Takayama Train Station.

When we arrived at the hotel, the check in counter seemed to be closed, as check in was from 2pm only. After calling out to a room behind the counter and waiting for a while, finally someone came out to assist us in letting us store our luggage before we can check in. The staff was very unfriendly.

Room was big enough for 3 of us, with sufficient luggage space.

This hotel is very old and dated, the bed is as hard as concrete, the room stunk of cigarette smoke and the man at reception didn't seem to care about anything when we checked in. The only saving grace is there is free room wifi and the hotel is in a great location, walking distance to transport, shops and sites
