We had high expectations for Suimeikan Karukaya Sanso and we weren't let down. It's set on a quiet road on the way to the Shin-Hotaka Ropeway. We traveled from Tokyo via Toyama and the bus from there (nouhibus) dropped us right out the front. The building is comfortable, quiet and warm. The rooms seem typical of the ryokan style but...

We wanted a nice outdoor onsen in the mountains and were not dissapointed. The place was a little hard to find as we went by bus, but no problem with a GPS. We had a small room, pretty cheap, they have bigger ones as well. There are 3 private outdoor onsens, very nice! One big outdoor onsen, mixed, and 2...

The hotel staff is ever so friendly, giving my family and I an brief introduction of the hotel upon arrival/check-in. The hotel also served us dinner which was delicious. The hot springs are very relaxing. This is perfect spot for a family weekend.

e stayed here in November 2015. We came from Kamikochi and passed through Hirayu to get here, and took the Nohi bus in the direction of the Shin Hotaka ropeway. We'd been so worried that the bus wouldn't actually stop near the place and we'd be left lost wandering around a busy road with luggage, but in fact it stopped...

We didn't stay in the ryokan - but took the bus from Takayama for the day. The outdoor onsen is beautiful - a huge, steaming pool set on the river with mountain views. Different areas have slightly different temperatures. There's also a private ladies bath (really beautiful, but no views) and some private baths (didn't use). There was only one...

Regret to have chosen this onsen hotel. Expensive with poor value for money. Facilities very raw and seems not well maintained. Rooms facing the mountain side are incredibly small. Will never choose an onsen hotel without a private bathroom like this one again...very inconvenient. Meals of average quality and not impressive. Outdoor onsen is big and unique. Yet, more privacy...

The staffs were very welcoming and friendly. Onsen experience was excellent. There are few types of private and open baths with different settings. Both my partner and I feel that the food can be improved. We are frequent Japan travellers and have tried different Ryokans before.

This hotel is one of the 100 secret hotspring in Japan. It's 1.5 hour away from Takayama, tucked away from the mainroad in the valley. Arriving at the hotel front, we were initially a bit put off by its seemingly torn outlook. It is an old property, definitely need some refurbishment for the room. And there is lack of bathroom...

After staying at this hotspring resort, you will find most of the other resorts average. Shortly after departure, I am already planning to bring my parents here next year. It's an hour drive from Takayama City, but it is well worth the time. Indeed, this is one of the few members of the Japan Secret Hotspring Association (all member resorts...
