=Glamorous Japanese style accommodation at ancient Hida-Takayama Japan= * The hot spring from Jindai spring gushes from 1200m underground. It is one of the few hot springs among the local accommodations. Its attractive spring quality feels like a rich beauty serum. If you touch your skin in the spring, you will feel the smooth silky texture. This particularly appeals to guests who love moist smooth skin and makes them visit again and again. * We serve you the very best out of the great variety of local fresh foods with Hida local sake according to the seasons. Wagyu Hida Beef Steak is the most popular main dish. Our selected beef supplier brings the finest quality Hida beef to us. The local Hida beef is famous for its marbling pattern but has no extra fat, and its texture is so soft it almost melts in the mouth. The cooking method for Hida beef varies including steak, shabu-shabu and sukiyaki. Dinner is the KAISEKI(Japanese traditional course meal).

Stayed 2 nites at this ryokan. Staff was friendly and efficient from Day 1, especially Atsushi. Most staff speak English. A nice property with both indoor and outdoor onsen. There’s a shuttle bus that runs between the train station and the ryokan which makes it very convenient for all guests. Food was good too.

This traditional style accommodation was exactly what our family of 8, including an infant, needed after a long trip from home to Tokyo the day prior. We traveled by train from Tokyo in the mid day to arrive around dinner time. From the moment we were picked up at the train station in Takayama until we left 2 days later, we felt very pampered, well fed, well rested, and relaxed.

As you leave the van to enter the traditional style accommodation, you breathe in fresh mountain air and are surrounded by visual beauty, with integration of the landscaping, building, and decor making you smile and feel joyful. As you remove your shoes and don the special socks that are offered, the offering of coffee or other beverages appropriate to the time of the day, in the lobby area, helps you to just unwind.

Our rooms were traditional style with tatami mats and bed futons laid out at night. The onsen, hot baths, were incredible and I enjoyed going at least once each day, sometimes twice, to see the gorgeous scenery presented in both venues (men and women bathe separately and the rooms are switched each day so that you can enjoy both venues). It was my first experience with an onsen, and it was by far the best on our entire trip - the water was so soft and luxurious, the outdoor "scene" so zen, and the commitment to quiet was divine.

We found the experience with breakfast and dinner, in our own dining room together, so remarkable with multiple courses at dinner, each described in detail and the breakfast included a map of everything in front of us (for those who chose the Japanese breakfast option). The Western option included eggs and bacon, which wasn't clear in our travel itinerary from our tour provider, so we were pleasantly surprised to have that in addition to bread, jam, fruit and vegetables. For our family members with allergies, they were fantastic to accommodate us so that everyone had something good and filling to eat.

We slept well and were so refreshed in the mornings. There was so much attention to detail and so much to enjoy at the facility that it was hard to break away to explore the local village - but we did, and we loved that as well, including a hike to the top of one of the local peaks where we learned that they have bears in the Japanese Alps - so cool.

The meandering path through the bonsai garden says “you are home”. Upon arrival the staff line up to bow respectfully and you are assigned a personal valet.

Traditionally Japanese with tatami mats throughout and a luxurious onsen with outdoor and indoor pools, sauna and cold plunge. There’s also a hot foot bath next to the koi ponds.

Meals are exquisite with a couple of choices for each meal.

Rooms are traditional with a bathtub and shower. The view is nice, especially for being in the city.

Well worth the cost.

We loved this ryokan. Admittedly we stayed in a western style suite which was absolutely gorgeous with extremely comfortable beds and spectacular finishings in the room, within a ryokan with all the traditional trappings - the onsen baths, a beautiful pond, private rooms for Japanese-style meals, etc. The service, food, ambience, etc. were all superb. The ryokan is not in Old Town but there's a continuous shuttle so it's easily accessible. This place was an absolute delight in every way.

The service of the hotel was impeccable. Staff were friendly and food was superb. The manager was very helpful when we asked for some ideas on where to go. For non English speaking staff, they tried their best to understand us and catered to our requests so we really appreciate it!

Not to forget, the onsen was also great with 2 outdoor bath and one indoor bath.

Great ryokan in a place that was way more touristy than I expected.
Great food, very heavy on Hide beef, and huge size kaiseki menus, so be aware and perhaps ask them to scale down a bit in advance.
Impeccable service, cleanliness, food, shuttle from and to the ryokan.
One thing to point out is the quality of the water of the onsen, one of the greatest I've ever experienced. I would have loved for the men / women onsen to be switched on days vs morning / evening though.

Dishonest hotel... BEWARE! booked a room with private outdoor onsen and garden with 60g of the highest grade A5 Hida Beef...and a low quality piece of meat showed up during dinner.
The manager insisted this was the best quality A5 beef depending on which part we like in the rudest manner, like we have never had the best quality A5 beef and never knew what does best quality A5 Wagyu looks like. Management was not responding to complain.
The beef was totally different from what has been showed on their website.
Refrain from booking this hotel, not worth it!
On the other hand, the place feels more like an amusement park rather than a traditional Japanese Onsen Hotel. The experience is unauthentic, not up to any of the Onsen hotel standards I have been to..

We stayed at the ryokan based on tripadvisor reviews and are disappointed we did. The food was the worst we had in Japan, the facilities were extremely outdated, and the service felt like we were in Disneyland. We stayed in many different places over our 2 week stay - from luxury hotels to basic temple rooms - and enjoyed every other experience. Hidatei Hanaougi is the only place we would not repeat. It was fine but if you're looking for an authentic experience instead of a forced one, stay somewhere else.

Lately we have become enamoured with trying out ryokans in Japan. Indeed there are thousands of pages dedicated to the experiences travellers have with ryokans all over Japan.
Basically a ryokan is a traditional Japanese Inn, usually small but some are very large. The usual rooms are tatami based but of late many western style hybrid rooms have become commonplace.
Two things are often featured which are traditional Japanese baths or onsens (communal single sex baths with a spring fed hot pool for soaking) and set or kaiseki dinners which are often elaborate multi-plated, multi-course meals that serve just about everything you can eat (and more) that is currently in season.
This ryokan is in Takayama which is a valley town ringed by mountains in central Japan.
A cultural town with an old quarter that has many museums, art and craft shops and a very nice weekend street market, it is the scene for a famous float parade twice a year.
But I think the jewel in its crown is this ryokan.
Service is beyond top notch. Dinners were so elaborate with such a range of local produce that each meal surpassed the previous. Plating utensils were works of art.
And we had a room with a private onset that allowed us to enjoy the first days of Spring in comfort, space and privacy.
For non Japanese speakers like us, having many staff that spoke perfect English was a pleasant surprise. We remember fondly Hanna whose ambition is to be an architect. She waited at our dining table and drew lovely pictures of our food, explained them to us and was a gem in helping us suss out the difference between firesquid entrails and mountain yam!
If you visit Takayama do consider this ryokan. We've stayed at more than a dozen all around Japan and this remains the gold standard.
