Detailed Reviews
We stayed over Labor Day weekend, as we have previous years, also. Our stays have been to attend Blues in the Bay, however, that was canceled this year, but we chose to go regardless as we enjoy Alex Bay.
Each time we have stayed our room has been very clean and well appointed. This year the decorative pillows, etc (unnecessary items) were removed from the room which was to be expected. Every area of our room literally shined. I mentioned that to both Erik and Lisa (front desk) as I wanted them to know housekeeping did an amazing job. I had a phone conversation with Lisa prior to arrival and she was extremely pleasant and helpful. Lisa was as pleasant and helpful when we were on site. She's a real asset to Capt Thomson's! I would also like to give Erik a separate shout out as he was very welcoming and pleasant upon our arrival. He was the same whenever I had contact with him throughout our stay. That being said, every employee we came in contact with were very friendly and if we had a question, they were very helpful. A job well done, by all!
We love the location as it is on the water and we are able to park our car and walk everywhere throughout the weekend. Our room was in the Upper Harbor. We love the views from the Upper Harbor. We had a view of the Castle, up the Main Channel, and the Bay. We also enjoyed being on the balcony in the evening, listing to the music that was playing across the water at the "Pointe". That was a real bonus this year as Blues in the Bay had been canceled. Just and FYI - we did not hear the music from inside our room.
We highly recommend Capt Thomson's and cannot wait to return next year! Already booked :-)

Enjoyed our annual trip to Capt. Thomson’s the beginning of July. Totally different experience this year with the Pandemic but still enjoyable. Masks were mandatory in all the shops & restaurants locally & maid service for the rooms was suspended for the duration of our stay. No worries.........the room was immaculate upon arrival & any necessities could be requested via phone & delivered to the room & placed on our door in a bag. The pool was not open which is understandable & the absence of travel buses for Uncle Sam’s Boat tours was certainly not missed! All in all the staff did a fantastic job making this another memorable summer at Alex Bay❤️

Since my passport is now practically made worthless by ignorant fools who refuse to wear masks in this country, I can only travel so far. Thank goodness my home state NY is compliant on so many fronts as I don't feel safe traveling anywhere else. It is evident in this hotel and many other establishments around Thousand Islands.
We stayed in the efficiency suite on the main channel. Check in/out were simple and easy. Anything you need, just ask the front desk staff and they will promptly respond. In these COVID days, things are pretty much contactless. I think face masks are provided if you don't have any.
The room itself was clean and spacious. With the exception of the sofa bed, all the beds and linens were comfortable. The unit was equipped with everything we needed to make a simple meal. I would wash all serving ware and utensils just to be extra cautious. I LOVED waking up every morning to eat breakfast on the balcony with a view of the Boldt Castle across the river.
The hotel was in close proximity to plenty of restaurants and shops. It's literally next door to Uncle Sam's boat tours and Cornwall Brothers Museum. Scenic View Park is a short walk away. A short drive will bring you to drive-in movie, Wellesley Island and Clayton, where there are many more activities to do.
This was a great stay and I would come here again!!!

I recently booked a 3 day stay to suprise my wife for our anniversary. What a huge mistake. They call it a resort but it is a basic motel and nothing more. Where do I start. 1) While checking in we were told the pool was closed. When I booked the motel the website said nothing about the pool being closed. The fact that the website said it had a pool was false information. I asked the front desk if we would get a discount do to the fact that the pool was not open. She said they couldn't do it. 2) When we opened the door to our room we were hit with a vile smell so strong it could have knocked us over. When we opened the refridgerator we found out where the smell came from. It had food from the last guests along with a container of dead worms. I then went to the front desk to inform the clerk. His answer was that they were short staffed. I personally saw 2 maids that could have been cleaning.I have stayed at other motels in the past before the pandemic that were cleaner than this motel. With this motel booking at only 50% capacity the rooms should be spotless and sanitized. I emailed them twice to give them a chance to redeem themselves but received no response. Needless to say we will never stay there again.

I just read the room description again and in fact there are no microwaves in these rooms. We just had a three night stay there and luckily, were able to get their companion restaurant, Riley's to care about our leftovers and to be nice enough to reheat them for us. We had gotten the food the previous night from them and I wanted to finish it before buying more (not cheap), so this made all the difference to me. On the part of our room, it was great but not spotless. Our two large windows were dirty and there were lots of dead little buggies for me to wipe up. The bed itself was heaven, and I slept well for those three nights. There is a large t.v. and a decent sized fridge in there. There is a pod coffee maker and an upgraded shower. By the way, the tube was spotless...trying to be fair here. We thoroughly enjoyed our three nights by just being in the room, loving the castle views, and appreciating the quiet, uncluttered beauty of the area.

This was the 12th year in a row we have come here for our vacation/anniversary. Once again we had a truly awesome time. With the country in a state of a pandemic, they did an amazing job keeping their guests and staff save. Room was very clean and well stocked as they are not doing daily housekeeping. However, if you needed anything, a call to the front desk was all we had to do. They would put whatever you needed in a plastic bag and hang it on your door to avoid contact. The only dissappointment was the pool was closed due to a new liner being installed. They did let you go to their sister hotel to use that pool, which was nice. Again, Thank you Capt Thomsons for another enjoyable stay. See you next year.

My wife and I have been coming here for at least 10 yrs. Each. Year. We find new improvements to the property. This year in light of COVID the innkeeper and the staff have adjusted their bookings and services to best protect the customers and the staff. Still a great place to call “home” if even for a week. The river views are fantastic.

I would not call this a resort but a nice motel.
The staff was nice, uninformed on the area, I asked for a restaurant recommendation & was sent to a place that is closed for the season. The Sunset room was WELL WORTH the additional cost. The room faces the lake with a private balcony to watch the ships & sunset. The front desk could have done a better job of telling us about the property, there is a gazebo that we found on our own, a fire pit that we found out from others is part of the “resort” The fire pit should be moved to the pool area this time of year so guests could actually use it.
The room is a good size & very clean. There is a love seat with coffee table, a desk & chair, a good size dresser. The mini fridge is the best of any place I’ve stayed. We had no issues with not having fresh towels each day, nor our bed being made. If you want these things you can have them by asking.
Alexandria Bay is a bust this time of year. Quite a few places are closed or close by 5:30 or 6 in the evening, which is ok if you’re doing nothing all day but if you tour the area & come back “shopping” is out. Only 2 restaurants & 1 bar/restaurant open for dinner & 1 for breakfast, no place for just a coffee & muffin (on a Tuesday & Wednesday)
Capt. Thompson’s is worth the money as long as you get a room with a view. If you can’t then stay at a less expensive place that is just as good. Don’t expect a resort
We were in the area the 2nd week of September & stayed a Monday & Tuesday night

The Bad: Room next to Uncle Sam Boat Tours, Boat was less than 16 feet away from building, diesel exhaust fumes and loud every 1/2 hr. for 10 minutes made balcony useless during day. Lap top and phone very week wifi would not work, staff (didn't seem to care) blamed it on cable company even though neighboring establishments signals were strong. Had to work out of room near hub at another building, yea!. Could get wifi from motel on tour boat?! Balcony light could not be turned off at night which attracted swarms of bugs making night time use difficult at best.. Crowds at entrance from Boat tours during morning hrs. not a big deal, but you will have to stop for people when entering or exiting. Limited parking, not enough for all rooms, was told by front desk staff we could park at Uncle Sam Boat tours handicap area???! I would call this is a motel.
The Good: Friendly staff, clean newer room, 3 out of 4 buildings have excellent location (other than they are in Alex Bay), good pool with 2 gas fire-pits.
If you HAVE to stay in Alexandria Bay this is one of the better places, I DO NOT recommend stay in the "Lower Harbor" unit. And if you have to have wifi, good luck.

We were in Alex Bay for the annual Thousand Island River Run and once again stayed at Capt Thomsons. The hotel is located on the end of the main street in town so it's very convenient for walking around and taking in the sights. Also the rooms are very nice and comfortable with a mini fridge and coffee maker in each room. Our room also had a great view of Boldt Castle. The only negative? As we were checking out and planning on making our reservations for next year we were told that bike weekend next year will be a 3 night minimum, really? Not exactly a popular decision with us or the other 3 couples in our group. I definitely understand a 2 night minimum since the rally starts Friday and winds down Sunday but 3 nights is pushing it, a good majority of bikers are heading home Sunday so it doesn't make sense to stay a 3rd night. We've enjoyed staying here but we'll be looking elsewhere for next year, a 3 night minimum makes no sense. Don't get greedy and try to take advantage of your customers, there are other choices in town.
