I stayed here after a recommendation from a friend the rooms are well sized but the bathrooms are really small they have a common car park with one other hotel in the street, a couple of times I went to park my car there the car park was full which later found out was from the non-associated sports bar across the street. The hotel is well position to the main shopping centre and markets all within walking distance. I only had one issue with the staff which was due to me unable to find my key, I was issued with a new one after paying 300 bath, a day later I found the key in the seat of my car. When I went to return the key the staff said they couldn't give me back my deposit which I wasn't happy with. There are many hotels in the area which are just as good if not better. So I would not stay here again!!

This is my third visit to UT, have previously stayed at the Charoen (see other reviews).

Top Mansion is a lesson to anyone who wants to learn how to build a budget hotel, it's like a Formule 1 with staff. It's main attraction apart from price is that it's close to everything, for those who've never been to Udon before "everything" is as follows.

1. The strip of girlie bars. Top Mansion is next door but two from the main group of bars but Nutty Park and the ""budget" bars are less than 4 minutes walk.
2. The bus station is a close walk (8 minutes...or a 40 baht tuk-tuk ride with luggage).
3. Central Festival shopping mall for those who need a retail fix. It's pretty crappy.
4. The night markets which are one of the best in Thailand, 6 minute walk

If you're coming to UT for "1", you'd already know about this hotel so I don't need to sell you on it. But for those coming through on the way to Laos or to BKK I can highly recommend Udon as a 1 or 2 day stop and Top Mansion as the place to stay. Most will catch the train but ggetting a bus and stopping off at Khon Kaen and Korat are highly recommended. Songkran in Korat was one of the most frenetic things I've been involved in.

But back to Top Mansions. It's a well built hotel which means it's vermin proof, bug free, the plumbing and drainage and air--conditioning works, these are some of the things that let Thai hotels down. If there was an earthquake or fire I'd fancy my chances in this building. The rooms are very basic but spotless (I saw the cleaning lady literally scrub the tiled floor with a scrubbing brush), the bathrooms are impeccable, basically it's just a simple, solid, reliable product. Rooms are made up daily with new sheets / towels.

The check--in was completely smile free (except from the ladyboy), and almost hassle free. My first room smelt of cigarette smoke but I was promptly given a non-smoking room. I didn't specify when I booked, I don't suppose one should expect mind-reading at the price. Wi--fi is standard of course and quite fast with no dropouts. I had to pay 5 baht for a plastic cup too have a cup of instant coffee in... stingy??? Oh well.

There is no restaurant but right across the road is Nobi's restaurant which has western and Thai food, the local fare is excellent and cheap. Motor bike hire is also across the road at the hair salon. Friendly enough but they make you leave a 2,000 baht deposit, fair enough I suppose.

If the hotel had a pool it'd be perfect, but then the price would also go up so it's a question of balance. In a hot climate like UT I'd personally pay more for a pool but for many residents that would take money away from the girlie budget.

The proximity of the bars will be an issue for some, firstly because some people have a moral objection to prostitution, then there's the noise from the bars until after midnight that is largely, but not completely, eliminated by closing the louvres. You won't escape it so if you need absolute tranquility to get to sleep DO NOT stay here!! As for any moral considerations about old western men with young Thai women, make up your own mind but a warning that there will be a steady stream of these newly found lovers passing through the lobby in the morning. Who is really being exploited is the question that should be asked.

Overall this is one of the better value for money places I've stayed in Thailand and I come here often, have lived and worked here. If and when I build my own hotel in Asia this is the model I'll follow. Highly recommended.

met my wife in udon 8 years ago!! due visa problems we rented a room for her in top mansion for close to a year while i sorted all the red-tape in the uk. she was in fact the very first resident and hotel was brand spnking new. admittedly have not been for awhile but have stayed about 14 times in last 7 years. basically you have a faultless hotel for the price. clean, friendly, airy, convenient and well maintained. some more expensive hotels could learn from these guys. tip: they have a couple of bigger rooms they do not advertise for a very small extra charge so would reccomend them especially if a couple.

Very please with my £10 a night room. Greeted with smile on arrival. Easy check in and although the hotel is a bit dated the rooms are very large clean and fitted with air con. Fantastic base to explore the North of Thailand from, The hotel also offers free parking and is in the Heart of the city . With a good selection of bars and restaurants on your doorstep.

Great big clean room big bed TV with many channels great air conditioning friendly staff. Internet quite fast also.

Located around the corner from central festival mall and also very close to the night market

No real downsides for the money it in un beatable

I happened upon this hotel because my partner was admitted to Bangkok Hospital (Udon Thani).
It's literally around the corner from the hospital. Given that it's in the red light district the rooms are fairly quiet although the surrounding streets are inhabited by old farangs with ladies of the night. At the upmarket hotel about 50 metres further on a good buffet breakfast can be had for 150 baht.

Udon Thani relies mainly on sex tourists as there is little reason to stopover here otherwise. Top Mansion is located in the heart of the bar/massage parlour district and is an excellent hotel. The beds are super comfortable, there is satellite TV, free wifi and a good clothes-drying area which is in a kind of mini balcony. The only shortcoming is that there is no lift. Room prices range from 450 Baht for the cheapest rooms to 790 for the most expensive. The hotel is very popular, but they usually have an ample supply of twin-bedded rooms since the sex tourists occupy double-bedded ones where they sleep with the bar girls they are dating. It is best to request a room towards the back as the back is farly immune to noise from the nearby bars. There is a car park on site.

This is a nice, clean hotel, but I was a bit skeptical when I first saw the exterior of the building.

Pros:
Nice sized, clean rooms.
A/C
Good, fast wifi
Friendly staff
Good location: walking distance to the night markets and the big mall in town. Close to lots of restaurants
Fridge in room
Cheap price
Comfortable bed with nice pillows (couldn't feel any springs in the mattress)

Cons:
A/C was really loud and turned off a few times
close to a bunch of seedy-looking bars

I wasn't expecting much for £9 a night but I was pleased to discover the Top Mansion to be perfectly acceptable. My room was clean and air-conditioned and the shower worked. TV as well. I wasn't disturbed by the night life and slept very well.

Location-wise it was ideal. Within easy walking distance of the main shopping centre and close to all the bars and cafes. A tuk tuk was always outside so transportation to train and bus stations was easy.
