if you expect a luxurious resort then you will be disappointed. but if you look for a quiet, peaceful and friendly place then you are at the right location. the mooban talay is a small resort on a private beach near the main pier of ko samed. friendly staff welcomes you with a warm smile. the rooms are spacious and very clean. the breakfast is simple but very good and the coffee shop that belongs to the hotel makes a good coffee.
if you like a nice thai dinner with a good fish or a very good tom kha gai then stay at the hotel and enjoy it on the resort’s beach restaurant. the food is well done and tasty.
if i had to comain about something its only that the hotel should better care about the alluvial trash. sometimes there ist to much around on the beach.
but thats complaining on a high level. because the mooban talay resort is a nice place to forget about business and hastle and noice in the city. i definitely come back.

We really enjoyed this resort. Beautiful scenery and it’s relaxing, quite and the breakfast is tasty. The rooms where cleaned everyday which is a plus especially with all the sand. Lastly the restaurant is affordable and the food is great!

This is definitely the place to stay if you want a private & quiet relaxing stay. Apart from another couple, we were the only people there....this meant the pool & the private beach is all yours!
Location: Is is located away from the busy town but only a few minutes ride on a motorbike to the nearby Sai Keew town, where you will find the beachside restaurants & bars.
Environment: Quiet, relaxing
Cottages: No TV, radio & phone, so you can definitely switch off and be away from your usual busy life. Outdoor shower - what an experience to feel like you are showering under the trees.
Service: Minimal but always staff around to assist.
Food: Good selection of Breakfast but better to hire a motorbike and eat in the nearby towns for the other meals - more selection.
Activities: Good for wakeboarding as the water & beach is all yours!
Would highly recommend this resort for those is search for a real castaway - not for those in search for a lively & entertaining resort.

Unfortunately, this resort did not meet our expectations. We booked a room expecting to have a quiet, clean, calm holiday and we were met with anything but. Our room was small, not extremely clean and had mold in the room. The resort restaurant food was mediocre and the beach was very crowded with boat loads of tourists who came in for the day. We cut our trip short and moved hotels as we were not satisfied.

Located on the upper most point of Koh Samet, it’s nice to be away from the Main Street but not too far away with a scooter. Their beach is nice and quiet, not too many boats and clean water. The room was nice, we booked a beachfront bungalow for 2 nights. Big enough and bathroom good although they had turned the hot water off - we didn’t realize we needed to turn the water heater on ourselves. Restaurant ok the beach was ok. Heavily tastes of MSG - so food tastes great but wouldn’t eat too much of it. Breakfast is straightforward, we only had it one out of 2 mornings and went to Jeps further down the coast for better scrambled eggs on toast and a cappuccino. Unfortunately this resort is really lacking any service or friendliness. The staff seem to get the basics done overall, except one staff member in the restaurant - Ging or Gee (not sure)... was the rudest, most aggressive service staff we’ve come across in years spent living in asia, snatching 2 bottles of minere water out of our hands after we questioned the price of 2 small bottles: 100THB! Anyone should know you can buy these anywhere else in Thailand for 10 baht each. Her backchat and yelling and rude behaviour was appalling however there was no management around ever either. It’s obvious that experience left a bad taste in our mouth and we’ll never book this hotel again as the rooms are far overpriced for a 3 star rating, service and facilities available, unfortunately.

We are writing the restaurant review here as there is none listed. This is our 20th trip to Ko Samet but our 4th to Mooban Talay for lunch in 5 years. Unfortunately the 4th trip was NOT the charm, they have obviously changes chefs int he last 2 years for the worse :(( a big disappointment as we took a foodie amigo with us and so a bit embarrassing. Had 2 of the same 3 dishes as 2 years ago and nothing even similar--in particular the tom yum was frightful, straight out of a Knorr's soup pack and too salty to eat. Unfortunately the service matched the quality of food: two zombie-like waitresses who literally came to the table ONLY when you didn't need them. Mistake after mistake, like a video of how not be a waiter. And as this restaurant is 40% more expensive than the average on Koh Samet an an hour's walk from the rest of the island, there is simply no excuse. Too bad.

Travelled here with my wife after a frantic few days in Bangkok and this is a beautiful, peaceful getaway spot. Of you prefer nightlife, noise, excitement etc, don't come here. The accommodation is clean, quiet and the outside shower (open roof) is ok. Hearing the sounds of the jungle as you shower is nice too. The staff are friendly and whilst their English is limited, it's a lot better than my Thai so I'd never complain about that. Food was fine, reasonably priced for a resort, drink prices similar. Struck me as very much a place for busy couples who really want to get away from it all for a few days, we loved it. Remember to pack plenty of tropical strength flyspray as you are in the rain Forrest.

This place is soooo overpriced compared to the other (read BETTER) resorts on the island. I think perfect name for this hotel is "Sleepy" resort. You may well be the only guest in the hotel, but service is still struggling. Food is absolutely appalling, small portions and extra price. If using hotel's travel service, "Consierge" (if you may call him that) seem to be arranging most expensive tours for you, which we luckily noticed and cancelled. Staff is friendly however doesn't speak english. If you are looking for total isolation, this is your place. We however found this place to be just the opposite they are adverting, except that is is QUIET.
Koh Samet is absolutely fab island, but next time we will stay at more atractive hotels like Ao Prao or Le Vimarn cottages and stay away from Mooban Talay.

First of all getting here is a pain. There is only 1 transfer the hotel offers which is at 1pm from Ban Phe. If you reach after that, you are left to fend for yourself with the cheating and aggression of the touts at the filthy pier. Btw, be warned you have to carry your own luggage on the pier and onto the speedboat.
A beach landing, where the hotel staff were present, we proceeded to the resort.
Unkempt, poorly maintained and inefficient service are clearly visible. No one to attend at the reception, coffee shop and restaurant staff busy chatting among themselves.
Poor toiletries.
Mosquitoes.
Lack of cleanliness within public areas. The pathetic welcome drink they offered us, the glasses of which were still lying at the reception after 4 hours!
Poor quality of tea in room.
No lockers in room.
Light bulbs non functional.
Slow wi fi
When we said we wanted to check out after 1 night as were dissatisfied with the resort, they told us they would charge us for an extra night as we were booked for 3 nights. When we asked Booking.com through whom we had booked, they said it's the property's discretion and the resort says it required clearance from Booking.com. Pure harassment!
We requested an oil massage on arrival. They have NO SPA! They said a lady would come at 5 30 and give massage to me and my wife one after another. Then they informed that she was on the mainland and could come only at 6 45. When the therapist finally turned up, she said she didn't know oil massage and could give only Thai massage!
I have never given such a poor review to any property in the past but Mooban Talay deserves nothing better. Stay at your own risk!

We were picked up from Nuanthip pier in Ban Phe by hotel shuttle boat which brought us directly to the resort in about 25 minutes (twice daily at 1300 and 1600 hrs, outside these times you may rent a hotel speed boat for your transfer directly to resort @THB2000). Alternatively you can take the regular ferry to the island's ferry terminal, about 10 minutes by taxi/scooter from the resort.
Warm welcome at resort dock with welcome drinks and immediately felt the tranquility of this place. Staff very friendly, Tony the manager relaxed and helpful.
It wasn't our first time to Samed Island but this was the nicest resort we have stayed at and would love to go back soon. Its quietness at the end of a coastal road, about 10 minutes by car/scooter from the main ferry pier where there are lots of facilities like massage/eateries etc, is just great. Unlike most other accommodations on the island there are no rude and ignorant russian tourists at Mooban Talay (no offense), in fact we felt we had the whole place to ourselves (resort was about 50% full).
This is a small resort with a friendly attitude. The private bungalos are set in beautiful gardens, especially around the spa there is a nice pond area with waterlillies. There's a beautiful pool with nice design loungers and showers and all this is just a few steps (about 10 meters) from the private beach where more sunbeds with white umbrellas await (thick cushions). This is a real perk coz other resorts we visited this time were very crowded and the beach at these resorts so full with tourists that it was not at all inviting to go there.
The bungalow (we had a seaview one, B7) was nicely equipped with: - hairdryer - shampoo/conditioner/showergel (there's a private outside shower attached to every bungalow which is a nice touch, no bathtub, waterpressure from the shower could be better) - large towels and large beachtowels - free bottled mineral water (2 bottles per day) - climate control (no fan) - umbrella/beach basked - mini fridge with room for your own stuff
Some considerations: - If you like to be in the middle of the action, this might not be the place for you (although the buzz is not far away) - If you are physically challenged you may need help getting to your bungalow as there is a (beautiful but) pebbled/very uneven pathway leading to the bugalows. They might have special bungalows if you have trouble walking, im not sure. - The private outside shower area (every bungalow has one) is a nice touch and it's kind of meditative to shower outside with nothing but large trees and nature around you (and a privacy wall ;-), although I would not prefer to shower during nighttime (mainly because I dont like the idea of insects flying around). - There were quite some mosquitos around (probably not only here) so bring repellent - Just steps from the resort gate there's a shop were you can buy refreshments/also some eateries closeby as well as a scooter rental place (powerful quality scooters @THB300 per 24 hrs, a fun and convenient way to explore the island, be careful though, the road is not always smooth and well maintained, sometimes muddy and slippery).
We did not see any critters here and felt the place was clean and quite well maintained.
I would recommend this place to (picky) friends without any doubt. In fact it is one of the few places on Samed Island I would go back to (the others being the likes of Paradee Resort with a whole different price tag).
