Baan mai is in a brilliant location free from tourists with it own private beaches. The one and only restaurant on the island was over priced for poor quality food. The manager was very pushy asking us repeatedly if we wanted to pay for excursions. Cottage was small, but clean with good air conditioning, be warned the bathroom is outside with very little shelter! With a bit of work this hotel could be 5*.

We stayed there just one night. Unfortunately, our long tail boat picked up us late for 1.30 hrs. We disappointed . When we checked in, we were cordially greeted by staff with refreshment that was very nice and made us smile. Cottages was lovely size but looks tired. It needs to be renovated.(No TV and safety box)
For dinner, I totally agree with other reviews that very expensive ex. fried rice costs 350 Baht per dish but I recommend coconut iced shake though. :)
Staff at the reception was helpful and friendly.
All in all, I'd recommend for 1-2 nights here. If you want more tranquil and private, escape from being overcrowded.

Baan Mai cottages is so magnificent for lovers of lots of green and peace & call. If thats what you want, it is second to none. Has a very original pool surrounded with Palm trees and you will constantly hear tropical birds tweets.
However although the beach is lovely, sea is full of stones. Not a comfortable swim therefore.
Cons is food is very expensive and there ara no other places to eat. We stayed there for two days (2 adults, 2 kids) and for 2 lunches & 2 dinners and occasional soft drinks for the family the cost was approx 10000 Bahts.
The staff is really pleasent and helpful. Especially the lady in the reception is so friendly.

We first visited Baan Mai in 2011 with a group of friends and liked it so much we returned seven years later with a smaller group. Unfortunately, the place has had no up keep in that time. We had booked for seven nights and ended up only staying three as it was intolerable. It was disappointing that we forfeited $160/night. The beachfront rooms were riddled with termites with their dust settling over everything including our toothbrushes. The door and fly screen door do not open and close without significant effort, the curtains are so old they are almost brittle and do not close properly, the mosquito net was so dusty we had to tuck it away as the smell was terrible. On our second day we were asked if we wanted the room cleaned, we said just towels will do which we never got and we weren’t asked again. There are cats everywhere and whilst they help with the rat population they laze in the restaurant including on the tables that you eat from (and in the kitchen). The pool is green. Yes, it has green tiles but there is visible algae settled on the steps and sides. It is not properly maintained as they suggest. It was the same in 2011 though. The pool lounges are so old and dirty they are unusable. There are coconut trees everywhere which look nice but they do not remove the coconuts so they drop sporadically posing a serious safety issue. The worst thing however is that they turn the power off just after breakfast each day to save money on generator fuel ,about 9am, and don’t turn it on again until 5pm. Therefore no aircon and no fridge AND no running water as the water pump needs power. When we were there the pump broke so we had no water in the evening. They let the guests share a shower which somehow still had some water. My husband and I take regular medicine which all went soft as it was so humid and no aircon or fridge to keep it cool. One of our friends had their aircon break down in the middle of the night. After sweating all night they were moved the next day. They claim to be 4 star, I think 1 star is being generous. On a positive note, the food is nice home cooking. Maow (one of the two sisters operating the place) does a commendable effort in preparing and cooking the food. The beds are very comfortable. Lone Island is very quiet and untouched so great if that’s what you want. Just make sure you don’t pay more than about $60-$80, as that’s all it’s worth and be prepared to rough it a bit. Don’t forget your beach shoes as there is a lot of dead coral. The place needs some serious money spent on it to bring it up to even a three star standard. They also need to monitor and respond to emails.

My husband & I visited these "cabins" in February when they were not very busy, but still got horrific service! We have traveled all over the world & are very easy going people that have NEVER given a bad review, but this place was awful! Once they have you stuck on their trashy island they nickel & dime you to death!

We don't need a fancy room (which is good because they did not have that either) but were surprised to find out that they charged us an exorbitant amount for the boat ride to AND from the hotel each time we needed to get off the island.

When we were on our way back from our tours for the day, we called the resort to let them know we were headed back so the boat would know & be ready...No one ever answered & after 4 calls they finally picked up & we were told the boat was on the island & we would have to wait TWO HOURS until he was scheduled to pick up another couple. It's only about a 7 min boat ride but we had to wait hours for a pick up, even though they were charging us for the boat ride! We were exhausted from the long day, hungry, & just wanted to take a shower & go to bed.

When we needed to catch our flight home at 7 am we were told that was too early & the boat driver was NOT available...THEY LITERALLY TRAPPED US ON THE ISLAND & could care less that they we were going to miss out flight! I have never been so stressed in my life! After an hour of them arguing with us, & only after we told them we were going to give them a bad review, they agreed to charge us $40 for a 7 min ONE-WAY boat ride!

Outrageous & horrific customer service by two cranky old women, with terrible food...Would not have my worst enemy stay here!

What a wonderful place! My husband and I stayed here on the last leg of our honeymoon in Thailand. Although it was slightly confusing to get to at first, we were picked up in their long tail boat (free of charge) and brought to our own bungalow right on the beach. We stayed here for 5 nights. We were worried about not making it to the mainland enough, but we went over to the big island 4 of the 5 days. We ate several meals here and every one was absolutely fantastic. The chef even let us back in the kitchen with her (we were the only people staying there for 2 days) and taught us how to make authentic Thai food. You can walk on the beach around the island, go on trails up the mountain, or just lay around in the hammock. There's a beautiful pool, the staff is extremely friendly and accommodating, and it was a wonderful stay.

We visitied baan mai as a family of 4, youngest only 6months old and we loved it. Our house was right at the beach, the atmosphere is very relaxing and the staff is super friendly. As a family we loved it. If you want to relax this is the place. If you want shopping you can take the boat (10min) free of charge at set hours. We will return and stay longer next time.

I would definitely head back there because it feels like home.

Location : 15 mins boat ride from Chalong Pier.

The resort : Beautiful. Peaceful. Clean.

The people : Amazing - the owners & Num who gladly help with everything we requested for. He never fails to put on a smile. This is truly service from the heart. :)

Food : Rather pricey. Nasi Goreng and Samosa with chocolate sauce is to die for.

Rooms : Beachfront cottage. Love it especially the verandah and the outdoor bathroom.

View: speechless

Will I come again or recommend to people : that goes without saying.

Thank you guys for the warm hospitality. See you all Mama's in Sept for my mothers birthday!!

My wife and I booked ourselves at Baan Mai for 7 nights for our honeymoon while in Thailand. We had initially planned to stay for one week but loved Thailand so much we extended it to two weeks. So glad we did and chose this place. So glad. Our previous stay the first week was at a self proclaimed Five Star resort. In my opinion Baan Mai was better. It is not a Five Star but it is a very good boutique hotel run by two lovely ladies. If you want peace, relaxation, sunshine, and local people this place is for you.
The setting is wonderful. Walking out of the beachfront bungalow are mere steps from the sea and right on the beach. Gorgeous. The accommodations are great for couples. This is nestled on a beach and backs into a jungle so you will get some critters that hang around the bungalows. None of them harmful, of course. Although the look on my wife's face when she encountered some large geckos in the outside bathroom at night was priceless. The housekeeper and other staff do a wonderful job in keeping everything tidy, including the beach and garden areas clear from fallen leaves.
If you need a break from all the sunshine on the beach we recommend exploring the island a bit. We recommend heading to the Muslim fishing village and talking with the local people. This made our trip as we met a wonderful woman, Aroonspi, whom shared with us a wonderful Thai papaya salad (Som Tam) and great conversation. Who knew a nearly 70 year old Thai woman would enjoy watching the NFL on television?
The boat transfers to Chalong pier were always fun and free of charge so if shopping or other activities in Phuket are on your intermarry no need to fret. They will get you there no problem. If you are so inclined and even tire of staring off into the sunset everyday the ladies can arrange a multitude of activities for you.
The food is fine and I have no complaints. Some of it is quite wonderful. I don't know how she handles such a large menu but she does. We stuck to the Thai offerings of course and in particular the more localized dishes. Glad we did as they were great.
This is a relaxed place that moves at a relaxed pace. All of the fellow guests that we spoke with during our stay were of the same mindset, which is probably why we enjoyed everyone's company. If that isn't suitable and the sortied nightlife of Patong is your thing then best look elsewhere.
Baan Mai is the place for a stress free stay with sunshine and relaxation. It has so much to offer in a beautiful setting. Much thanks goes to the ladies for making us feel so welcome that we plan on coming back next year.

My boyfriend and I were staying in Phuket town and were looking for an authentic getaway not too far from Phuket as we had very limited time. Well, Baan Mai wss exactly what we were looking for. Conveniently located 20 minutes away from Chalong pier (note that free pick-up anf drop-off transfers are provided) this island offers a relaxing atmosphere with lots of wildlife, watersports equipment available for free rental, pool, hammocks and sets of towels. Food is delicious and not so overpriced as some reviewers say. Also note that you can help the chef make food at no extra cost. To the reviewrs moaning about the animals, I would like to remind them you have a lovely bungalow in the middle of the jungle, 3 meters away from a beach that is home to crabs, you should be glad there are still animals around, meaning that us humans havent ruined the ecosystem...yet! This place is not a stetile 5-star resort but is a shabby chic bungalow resort, typically thai, a home away from home. probably the best place I have stayed at during my month travelling in south east Asia. Also did I mention that we got a free upgrade from garden to beach bungalow?

The free transfer is great if you fit in with the owners' ever changing boat schedule. If not, you are charged THB 500 per person for a one way trip from the island to the pier. In terms of drinks, a large Chang beer cost THB 200. Other hotels in Thailand charge around THB 100.

Answer from onephinepeace

No, it is 50 meters off of the pier at Chalong. There are no convenience stores on the island. However, if you would like to mingle with the locals in the village there was a small gathering place for the fishermen on the beach that had some drinks and food.

Thereis a freshwater swimming pool which is really nice and secluded. Due to the tides swimmming is not possible at low tide but at other times it is beautiful, calm and clear with very little current. However if you wish to swim in the sea at low tide the resort long tail boat will take you to a nearby beach at no cost and drop you there. You can arrange a suitable pick up time to return The food is really, really beautiful and Meaw, the cook , produces excellent Thai food, spiced to your requirements. It is a very laid back place with excellent service and smiling faces in a wonderful setting surrounded by virgin jungle. Lots of monkeys, squirrels and lizards.Daeng is the owner, and nothing is too much trouble..
