Booked 2 raft rooms with fan, during the recent Buddhist Festival long weekend. A lot of places we tried to book, didn't have 2 rooms available, so it was with some trepidation, that we settled for 2 rooms at this guesthouse. With only paying 300Baht per room per night, we didn't expect much, but we were pleasantly surprised.
Our room consisted of a double bed & large bathroom, basic, but clean & tidy. You can sit outside your room on a night & you have a great view along the River, watching the boats zipping up & down.
No breakfast provided, but its only a 2 minute walk & you're at a 7-11 & onto the mainstreet.

Views from this hotel are fantastic, being right on the river.

I stayed in a fan room, opposite reception, for a ridiculaously cheap price.

Room had twin beds, and was quite dated, but can't complain at all considering the cost.

No breakfast or coffee options, but there are plenty of restaurants, 7 elevens etc very close by.

Only a 10 minute walk from the train station, opposite which there is a night market with a great food choice.

Around a 30-40 minute walk to the bridge and JEATH museum.

Recommended.

We stayed in the Tamarind guesthouse for a night in September. Initially I was really impressed with the service. We arrived at 7:30 AM and at no extra cost, the guy let us check in early to get a few hours sleep after a long trip from Koh Tao. They weren't quite as helpful for the rest of our stay though, a bit vague on leaving our bags somewhere safe for the day (we had a day tour which finished late on day of check out), which ended up being the chair next to reception and weren't great with directions to places.

The room was basic, we had one of the 'floating' rooms. I quite liked it, although my partner wasn't keen. We had quite a few encounters with Mosquitoes (we expected, we're on a river!), spiders, cockroaches and a lizard. The lizard was actually quite an effective pest controller. She hates creepy crawly's, so i'd advise a different room if your a bit squeamish. There are lizards everywhere though, so be warned. The reception area is best for WiFi and we sat there watching the sun go down over the river, which is simply amazing. The hotel is just outside the centre of town, but lots of bars and restaurants. Bell's Pizzeria is great for a bit of tasty Thai food and the pizzas looked amazing for the price.

If you want to book a tour, go through KTC, left out the hotel and 500m walk on LHS. Couldn't speak more highly of our guide who we booked a day tour to the waterfalls, railway and elephants with. She was brilliant and smiled all day! We also got bus tickets to Chiang Mai through her. The cheapest we found by 200B (checked 2 other places) and the journey was the smoothest we've had so far.

Good value for money and a great location, but its not a luxury hotel!

The room was very clean. The toilet has a bucket flush system. Taking a shower means a floating bathroom because the water didn't get away.
At daytime this place is very peacefull, and beautifully situated at the River Kwae. At night there is noise from livebands at the street bars if you sleep in the rooms in the building. I don't think the rooms on the rafts were more quiet because I heard a lot of frogs at night.
We booked a tour at the reception of Tamarind and it was well organised.

The best thing about this guesthouse is the view. It is located right next to the Khwae Yai river, with a breathtaking view. It is as well located just a minute from a nice road full of little restaurants and coffee shops. One negative thing about the place was that our beds weren't that soft. It felt like we were sleeping on a block of wood, but for just 3 nights it was okay. So if you are planning to stay here, we would recommend not to stay too long if you also would like to have some good nights of sleep (we had a room with only a ventilator).

Booked this last minute as we were heading to Kanchanaburi the next day and there wasn't a lot of choice available. We originally got given a twin bed room although we asked for a double and when we got into it we found little bugs all over the beds, I assume this was because the room hadn't been used in a while. The staff were very nice and friendly and allowed us to switch rooms to the raft house next door which had just been cleaned!
Our new room had a very hard bed, a shower that was broken and sprayed everywhere and expect to get plenty of bugs because there are gaps in the floorboards. The never got cleaned the whole 3 nights we were there and we had to source toilet roll ourselves as well as getting rid of an ants nest in our behind our sink.
However the raft houses offer an exceptional view of the river because you're on it! And they had a nice communal area with seats where you could eat and use the WiFi. It was also very cheap at £6 a night!
So if you're on a budget and want a unique experience of staying on the river and don't mind a few bugs in a very basic room then this could be for you.

To enjoy a night or nights in Kanchanaburi, one should try out Floating Guesthouse. A few of them are really expensive. The cheaper ones are within 20 min walk from Kanchanaburi Railway Station. A train ride from Bangkok is only 100 baht. However, there are only 2 trains departing each way between Bangkok and Kanchanaburi.

Tamarind Guesthouse is one of the few that offer Floating House on the river. There are 5 cheap rooms. The other rooms are on the land. The best room is Room No.20, the corner room. However, all these floating houses face the pagoda, and not the sunset direction. Pity.

We did not expect much. So, we were not really disappointed. There was hot shower. Sad that WiFi was not working. I only hope that the Guesthouse would consider putting more power points, especially near the bed. There was only one power point for my friend and I to share. It was not really convenient.

The location was not only near the Railway Train Station. It was a 20 min walk to the River Kwai Bridge. There were several food Cafe, stalls and restaurants nearby. 7-11 was just beside the Guesthouse. Bars and massage parlours were scattered all around.

Pity there were too many dogs around to spoil the walk. Yes, they did not bite but I did not enjoy dogs barking at me.

On the second night, the little bugs were attracted to the lights in the room and they fell onto my bed. Way too many. I had to sweep them off my bed before sleep. Still, this did not bother me much, as I enjoyed my stay in the boathouse. No mosquitoes bothered me. There was a beautiful reflection of the evening pagoda light on the river. It made the sitting more pleasurable.

This guesthouse has a very pretty terrace overlooking the river, along with the fact that it is very quiet and peaceful, a real asset that made us decide to stay for 5 nights.
The room was good enough, we had booked the fan option which was sufficient for our needs.
However, there are a few things that were below average:
One, our room did not get cleaned once in our 5 day stay, even though we asked for it. We had even put the trashbins outside and they did not get emptied. The other thing is that only after a few days, when I asked if I can put something in the fridge, we were told that the fridge is actually for guests. I just read a comment about someone here about that there is a kitchen for guest use. We were not told that either and only saw hotel staff using the kitchen in the days we were here. So if staying here, make sure you ask about all that and be insistent about the room cleaning.

Tamarind Guesthouse is located in the tourist guesthouse area but in a small and quiet alley down to the river. It's nicely decorated and has a variety of rooms ranging from singles with shared bathrooms to double aircons and floating fan rooms. I stayed in a solid fan double for 350B in January, which should be high season. The room was in perfect condition, but it lacks some furniture though. The walls seem to be very thin as well. I couldn't see a restaurant working. They have a small kitchen, but they don't sell food at all. The restaurants are just 50m away anyway. The guesthouse has a very nice terrace from where you can overview the river Kwai and enjoy a remarkable sunset. The staff is very friendly and helps where ever they can. You can also rent bicycles for 50B per day at the guesthouse. You won't find the Khao San backpackers here. I found all the guests quite mature, which was great. I enjoyed my stay here.
