Set in beautiful and tranquil surroundings, the Mount Meru Game Lodge is nestled between the Usa river and the sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to water buffalo, birds and monkeys, including the elusive Colobus monkey. Conveniently located just 30 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), the lodge is an ideal starting point for your safari. The lodge & sanctuary date back to 1959 when Dr. Von Nagy bought the property as a family home. The main building dates back to the 1930's and was originally the farm manager's house. In the first half of the 1900's most of the area on the southern slopes of Mount Meru were coffee plantations. Dr. Von Nagy's was passionate about animals and he quickly turned his family home into an animal sanctuary and orphanage. He setup the Mount Meru Wildlife Reserve in order to protect the wildlife on Mount Meru, what is now part of Arusha National Park. He also helped the government to establish the Wildlife Collage and used his animal sanctuary and orphanage as a training facility for the students. His home and passion attracted visitors from far and wide, rooms were added to accommodate his visitors and the lodge was born. The lodge is one of the oldest lodges in northern Tanzania. Great effort has been made to keep the lodge as original as possible while at the same time offering some of the modern day comforts. The lodge has grown in popularity over the years and our visitors have included numerous presidents as well as members of European Royal families. When Dr. Von Nagy retired in the 1980’s, the animal orphanage stopped taking on orphaned animals. The Mount Meru Game lodge remains in family hands till today and the family look forward to offering you a memorable experience during your stay in Arusha.

Mt Meru game lodge and sanctuary is a hidden secrete in USA river Tanzania. Harry, Kim and all the staff go the extra mile for you and the Lodge is beautiful. It still holds so much history from the original owner and is the most peaceful and tranquil place in USA river. I spent three days here and struggled to leave as its so lovely. The animals they have are just the icing on the cake- wildebeest and zonkeys as well as the resident monkeys/colobus. I cannot wait to stay here again and I was that impressed with the whole experience that I have booked my parents to stay here in February.

Our visit to the lodge exceeded our expectations. It was beautiful!!! Every part of our experience was wonderful. This is a unique and special place. There are many lodges and places to stay in the area and no place is like this. The family history and the way the lodge has modernized yet kept its old traditional feel is remarkable. There is no other like it! Watching buffalo and zebra while while eating breakfast!!! What a treat! From first arriving at reception, to our rooms, the food, and the animals, it was all around wonderful. The staff were amazing!!! They were kind, helpful, knowledgeable, sweet and fun. They were all wonderful english speakers and made us feel welcome and safe from the moment we arrived. The Mount Meru Game Lodge is a gem! Thank you Zummi and all who make it possible!

We enjoyed this lodge very much and booked again to come back towards the end of our trip as it was such a great place. Friendly and professional, clean, excellent service, good value for money. The beautiful old trees and the animals are a joy to be surrounded by. You can relax at the swimming pool, the patios or at your own veranda. It is a retreat from the busy areas around Arusha and Moshi, yet close enough to visit their center when necessary. It feels very safe and well taken care of. They make sure you find a car for transport to Arusha, Moshi or any other day trips you want to make- they really take good care of their customers. I will return for sure on my next trips and recommend it to those who appreciate a lush tropical place to relax.

Being a vegan traveler in this part of the world is never easy. My emailed question regarding vegan meals was never answered. Very limited options for food. Pool was nice if basic. The water pool with a few animals was different. Rooms and amenities were clean.

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent experience of the Lodge. Our apologies for not getting back to your emailed query before you arrived. We had two requests in the space of a week for vegan meals, which highlights to us the need to have such menu options available for our guests. As mentioned to you on the day, our vegetable curry and rice, vegetable cashew nut and rice, and some salad dishes are vegan-suitable. We're currently busy working on signage and planting up the gardens around the pool area. All the best from the team at Mount Meru Game Lodge

This was our 3rd trip to Tanzania and we start and end our trip at the Mt Meru Game Lodge each time. It is.conveniently located between Kilimanjaro Airport and Arusha, set back off the road to feel like you are in a lush garden. We have always been impressed with the warm welcome by the staff and special attention from staff throughout our stay. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The property grounds are beautiful. We love the history of the lodge and the serenity the location provides. The evening campfire, the morning coffee watching the nearby animals are an added benefit to our stay. Highly recommend it.
