The location is unique and the property is yet another colonial example of Galle heritage. We had good Sri Lankan lunch served by friendly staff. I was told that most staff has been working for long years. Though difficult, a better eye for maintenance will take the hotel a long way.

Great place, very comfortable, views terrific.Staff were delightful rooms spot less. Decor a bit tired but renovation is on the cards in the near future,I personally loved the dining room and the relaxing areas lhope they do not modernize it too much as it gives you the feel of past elegance.

We stayed here for 3 nights. The hotel is quite old, and unlike some old hotels we stayed in, it has not been renovated for quite some time. Its major strength is its location overlooking the ocean giving guests wonderful sea views. The staff are also very friendly and helpful, and the dinners are very good, while the breakfasts are... What a delightful escape from the usual hotel ritzy busy dazzle of today....possibly the establishment needs some freshening up but on the whole this is what makes it unique. Recommend Closenberg to anyone who loves historic/colonial places to stay.

What a gem located on a cliff top. The hotel is historic and quaint, the rooms although not modern have stunning views onto the water with private balconies. The service was personal and friendly and the Sri Lankan breakfast was delicious, each morning the staff would reserve the same table for us. There was a staff member who had worked... More

We stayed our first two nights at the Closenburg and were dazzled by its charm and the service which we received. The situation of the hotel on the promontory overlooking the ocean is beautiful, the sound of the Indian Ocean from the bedrooms is relaxing and the cocktail bar by the infinity pool was perfect! We were wondering why we... More

Comfortable rooms with a mini bar,Tea/Coffee making facility,AC & ceiling Fan and room with the colonial effect. This is one of the greatest parcels of property I've encountered in my travels. Unfortunately, the rooms are well below par and desperately in need of renovation. But it is in the common areas where this hotel shines. The infinity pool is stunning, affording expansive views of Galle Harbor and the daily surfers (get a second floor room and you'll... More

We stayed here for two nights as part of a comfort-style trip around the country. But comfort couldn't be further from the reality. The hotel has old world charm for sure, and I understand that there aren't the funds to repair broken ceiling fans and drains, but the hotel was filthy. We had stained sheets and towels. The curtains and... More

This historic old building has the most amazing views - including an infinity pool that looks out over a bay full of surfers. Their local cuisine is limited but very very tasty. The rooms are very old but clean and comfortable. The staff are pleasant and helpful.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Closenberg was built by Captain Bayley in 1860 on top of a peninsula overlooking Galle harbor and the Indian Ocean. Since 1889 it belongs to the Perera Abeyewardene family and is today preserved as a heritage hotel. Large spacious halls, long verandas adorned with antique furniture and terraced gardens are in keeping with Dutch architecture. High ceilings resting on tall round columns and large louvered Teak doors set in arched doorways permit the flow of cool air. Alongside an experience of Sri Lanka's rich colonial past, we offer our guest a welcoming atmosphere, fine dining and an unparalleled view. Closenberg Hotel unique features are: The best location at the middle of Galle Harbor, Uninterrupted seaview from all our rooms, Direct access to beautiful sandy beach ideal and safe for surfing and swimming in all seasons, The unique and timeless elegance of an old Sri Lankan Heritage Hotel often copied but so hard to achieve, A sophisticated blend of service, tradition and cultural experiences Luna Terrace Bar Lounge is the funky trendy place to go and be seen in Galle. Great selection of cocktails, top brand spirits, tapas and fine cafe food. The new infinity pool overlooking the surf of Magalle Bay is a "must have experienced".
