We stayed pool facing and it was a good one. Need improvement in bathroom and toilet maintenance. Food is manageable. Near to Borobudur temple and good location. Parking is a bit cramped. Property overall is good.

Really love the ambience and surrounding area.

The interior itself really stunning. The food was great! All the staff are friendly and nice.

The only minor thing was the pool, it was good but can be better if it was clean regularly. Other than that it's a nice place to stay around borobudur.

We enjoyed our stay here very much. It is quite close to the temple but a bit of a walk in the heat. For younger people, no problem. The staff were very attentive, friendly and extremely polite. The proprietor organised our entry into Borobudur and two other day tours with guide and transport at a reasonable price...really enjoyed the tours. As it was very hot we enjoyed the swimming pool in the middle of the day and the large open sided restaurant/sitting room was comfortable and pleasant for relaxing.
The food at the restaurant was cheap but average. We ate here a couple of times because it was convenient but I would suggest you go elsewhere. My husband and I ordered a coke and a beer which they didn't have so one of the boys hopped on his bike and went down the road and bought them for us.
The rooms here are quaint but basic...little traditional bungalows, with a bathroom, a mattress on the floor and no other furniture, not even a chair as the rooms are tiny. They are new though and quite lovely but as we are in our 60s I didn't think I would be comfortable. Younger people might enjoy this experience. We were able to move to the one furnished room which suited us nicely.
We preferred this guest house to a larger, impersonal hotel and would recommend it...a very pleasant experience.

The Amrta Guest house is traditional Javanese style building(That is fresh and I felt even modern to me.)stands in the middle of rice field and 5 minutes walk distance from Borobudur temple.
The compact cozy room was very clean and the facilities are modern. The room doesn't have TV set, but who would like to watch TV in the peaceful and quiet country side? I enjoyed the sound of flog and insects in the night and woke up by the Koran in the morning.
Standing shower is available and basic shower amenities are provided. And I would like to say a swimming pool is very new!

Free coffee, tea and water are provided 24hours in the public place. The restaurant provides both of traditional indonesian and western food. It was not so expexsive. You don't need to walk around long time to find a nice restaurant in the unknown place.

I didn't have another information except Borobudur when I arrived at the guest house. But guest house staff friendly helped me guide well around this area.Borobudur from Punthuk Setumbu Hill. Sunrise and dawn bike riding in the rural country side was awesome! And the contemporary art gallery too. I could touch beautiful nature and local culture, besides Borobudur.

I could not experience this time, but this district has many worthy site and various activities.Small temples, the active volcano Merapi. Rafting and bike riding in the nature. I think the staff will help you if you stay at The Amrta Guest House!

Thank you very much for your great hospitality, Aan and Wendy and all staff!

To get there by public transportation from JOG airport
(The Amrta Guest house is also available to pick you up to the airport.)

1. Go to the bus terminal"Jonbor" by Trans Jogja by 5:00.
One ride of Trans Jogja takes Rp.3,000. You will miss the last bus if you can not reach Jonbor by 5:00.I used Trans Jogja A1 from the JOG airport to "Malioboro"(City center) , then changed to 2A for "Jonbor". 2hours is enough to reach Jonbor from the airport.

2. Catch the bus for Borobudur.
I had heard that the fare was Rp.7,600. But I was asked Rp.100,000 actually, and helplessly paid that price. But a girl next to me in bus was kindly whispered the fare for domestic is Rp.5,000. I don't know Rp.100,000 is proper for foreigners.
( I used taxi when I went.Because I missed the last bus. Taxi Rp.180,000)

3. Call on the guest house to pick you up to Borobudur bus terminal.( 5 minutes from this terminal)

*Borobudur opens at 6:00. The entrance fee was US $20. I hired an interpreter(Rp.50,000). That helped me so much to understand this temple.
*Entrance fee of the hill, Punthuk Setumbu is Rp.30,000.You can enjoy picturesque scene from there.

This is our 3rd visit to Borobudur. The previous visit was about 4 years ago and we stayed at the Manohara hotel. We liked the close proximity to Borobudur at Manohara hotel, but with the risen room rates and the old & dated rooms of Manohara, we decided to choose somewhere else to stay instead.
We chose Amrta because
1) we checked the map and found that it is close to the temple compound. We timed ourselves walking at a leisurely pace from Amrta Guesthouse entrance to the gate of Borobudur, and we took 9 minutes exactly. The route was a straight forward walk on paved way - simply turn right from the guesthouse and keep walking straight to reach the temple.
2) We read from the reviews here that the host of Amrta is a very helpful & hospitable man. He is Mr. A'an, and he truly is a warm and enthusiastic host who is also an avid nature and outdoor sports lover. He helped us to organise a cycling/sunrise trip to the Punthuk Setumbu hill - it was spectacular to view the sun rising above the Borobudur temple on a misty morning. Mr Jamal, our cycling guide is a very witty and cheerful man who knows the village round the temple by the fingers of his hand. Everywhere we cycled, locals were greeting him or calling out his name. The cycling & sunrise activity was very reasonably priced and it gave us a new perspective of Borobudur & its vicinity.
3) We enjoyed the stay in Mr A'an's carefully designed guesthouse - in fact, it was a nicely built local-styled stand-alone cottage with ensuite outdoor bathroom & separate toilet. There are only 3 cottages but the compound has a medium-sized pool good and very clean for a dip.
4) There is a main dining and sitting area that can accommodate at least 20+ people. We ordered our meals through Mr A'an, and we liked their Nasi Goreng Ayam (Chicken fried rice local style). Mr A'an & his family has their own family brand coffee powder, and we think it is one of the best local coffee that we have had in Java. The coffee, tea & water are free throughout the stay.
5) We arranged for a land transfer from Magelang(Borobudur) to Jogjakarta downtown and Mr A'an gave us a ride personally at a reasonable rate. We enjoyed chatting with this inspiring man throughout the journey.
It was a very enjoyable and relaxing stay, and we highly recommend Amrta Guesthouse to anyone who prefers a stay that gives you a personal touch and a chance to get closer to the locals of Borobudur/Magelang.

The goods

Very close to Borobudur Temple; friendly staff; unlimited tea, coffee and water in the public area; small swimming pool with pleasant outlook over rice fields; quiet aircon unit in the room and generally new feel about the en-suite; food is cheap but choices are limited; the room at the back faces the pool and you can open the shutters at the side to enjoy a view of the fields; wifi.

The not so goods

The rooms are small and basic - just a double mattress and some pegs - and quite dark; a few cockroaches shared our room; it’s on the main road into town so there’s road noise; the frogs in the rice fields can also be noisy at night so bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper.

We were the 1st guests to stay here after a problem with booking Rumah Darmah. We found the staff extremely helpful and the rooms very clean. Be prepared the mattress is on the floor and the room small but hey you dont spend much time in the room. The communal area is very relaxing typically Javenese and there is free tea and coffee at all times. Would Iwe stay here again? yes One must do is a tour with Jamaal on his bikes around the beautiful countryside. Special thanks to Aan and Wendy for their hospitality and wish them every sucess with The Amrta.

I can't say that we stayed at this hotel; only that I wish we had. We arranged to have lunch at the Amrta and were happy to have the engaging proprietor join us at our table and even invite me to take advantage of the swimming pool on site. A quick look at the artfully designed and cozy rooms made me despair that I was staying at the corporate-like hotel a few hundred yards up the road. The Amrta is an easy walk to the Borobudur temple and with a comfortable restaurant in the front and a beautiful pool nicely situated above the rice fields in the back, would have been exactly what was needed after exploring Borobudur.

Great location for an early start at Borobudur. Our rooms were ok, a bit tired. But the pool is immaculate with a nice view over paddy fields. There was building work going on which wasn't ideal but didn't affect us hugely, and I think once it's finished the new rooms will be fantastic. But by far the best thing was the owner, who must have been the most kind and generous person we met in our whole 6 week trip. He literally couldn't do enough for us - even insisted on driving each of the 4 of us, one at a time on the back of his scooter, at 4am, to the temple entrance. Then served us a huge breakfast on the terrace over looking the rice fields when we got back. Amazing.

"There are a few little Indonesian style bungalows with a bathroom, air con and a mattress on the floor....strictly for sleeping. Relax in the sitting area or by the pool. I would take the one farthest from the noisy road. We stayed in a small, furnished room upstairs in a brick building. The traffic noise died down at night and did not disturb our sleep."
