My wife and I spent our honeymoon at Stone House and had a wonderful experience. The decor and privacy of the resort was the primary reason we enjoyed our stay in Bali. The staff was extraordinarily helpful in booking activities as well. Breakfast was also amazing, with a combination of amazing local fruits and the best English muffin I've ever had. I would go back in a heartbeat if I could.

The most magical place we have ever stayed. The staff were so kind and attentive, they were there but so quiet so that you felt like you had the place to yourself. We stayed in the tree house and were blown away by this special accomodation. The pool and surroundings were like a tropical oasis. The breakfast was a complete highlight, so fresh and delicious. We were suppose to head out to dinner but decided to have it at the Stone house . Wow the food was so incredible that we ate there every night we were there. We loved the Stone house that much that we have booked again in April. The Stone house is very very special and leaves a feeling in you that you want to hold on to for a very long time.

Bali has earned the title “Island of the Gods” and the hotels bring the magic to match. But one hotel stands head and shoulders above the rest: Stone House. I usually wait until the plane ride home at the end of the trip to write my reviews, but this hotel was so wonderful I am writing it immediately after check-out with a week left on the island. If you are like me and agonize over which hotels are the best because you want to make the most out of your precious vacation time, the plethora of gorgeous choices in Bali can feel overwhelming. I can confidently say that the search should end at Stone House. After a month-long visit and ten different hotels, I have gained a lot of perspective on the range of stays available here. What surprised me the most is figuring out that there is an immense gap between the quality of smaller boutique hotels and the huge chain brands. In many other destinations, boutique hotels are able to offer all of the same amenities just with a smaller property and more personal interactions. Boutique is often synonymous with privacy, an intimate environment and subtle luxury. However, in Bali, many of the small hotels seem to sit firmly on the “eco” or “rustic” boutique hotel side, using this as a reason to not provide amenities like cotton swabs or bars of soap. Then on the flip side, you have the big name hotels charging exorbitant prices in an otherwise affordable destination, which feels at odds with the entire experience of traveling here. Enter Stone House. They have it figured out. It offers everything you could possibly ask for in a hotel. Let’s start with location and zoom out before zooming in. It is located along one of the main roads that lead out of downtown Ubud. It is such a quick ride away to all the downtown shopping, restaurants, and museums. You will have no problem getting cars or scooters to pick you up any time you need. If you are like me and usually prefer your hotel choices to be within walking distance of everything, that is nearly impossible in Bali. People seldom walk due to the scooter culture so there are very few sidewalks except on the main streets. I was hesitant originally to be calling for cars and scooter rides constantly, but it quickly becomes second nature. Only a few hotels in Ubud are located in the center, and then you sacrifice so much of the peaceful nature that is the draw of the area. With Stone House you get views of rice fields, beautiful bird sounds, natural running streams, and clean air, all within a five minute ride from town. Next: the property. As soon as you pull into the discreet circular drive-way just on the side of the road, you know you’re in for a treat. The thatched roof and stone wall of the main building lines the side of the driveway, and an unlabeled large door blends in with the scenery. It has a secret garden feeling to it, and that continues as soon as you step inside. Immediately you are transported to another world. It is like the best of Ubud’s natural environment has been perfectly preserved and cultivated despite all the changes over the years. I do not think I’ve ever genuinely used the term “shambhala” before but it instantly came to mind. There are so many little wonders around every corner, tucked behind every tree. The six suites are strategically located so that each one offers privacy, whether it be by way of elevation differences, layout or foliage. Even the Java Suite, which is attached to the Great Room which serves as the dining space, reception and lounge area, is located off to the site and with enough curtain coverage that I didn’t notice it was there until the last day. Plus, when you are staying somewhere with only six suites, it hardly ever feels crowded. Now, my favorite part: the rooms! I was lucky enough to stay in two different suites during my stay. I stayed in the farmhouse for my first four nights and it was pure bliss. After so much time spent zooming around the island, I was looking forward to settling into one space and feeling a bit more at home. That is exactly what I got with this room. It is located the furthest from the Great Room, accessed by walking around the pool, down the stairs past the treehouse, across the stone bridge over the stream, and up the path leading to the front porch. Like out of a storybook. Don’t let the number of natural features included in that walk worry you; it is such a short walk but because Stone House is so dense with gems of nature, it’s all represented within a two-minute stroll. The large front porch looks out onto the gentle slope of a rice field which bathes in morning and evening golden sun. Step inside and you’re greeted with a traditional Balinese style house, with modern amenities. These include: an AC unit that worked so well I actually had to turn the temperature up which did not happen anywhere else on this trip, a mini fridge, multiple lighting zone options, plenty of hangers, a safe, mosquito net, drawing supplies, coffee table books, and much more. The bathroom honestly deserves its own review, that’s how impressive it was. A bamboo pole with rainfall showerhead rises from a copper barrel basin, while the surrounding walls are made up of organically-arranged bamboo. Next to the massive stone slab sink sits a basket containing all the bath essentials you could need and would usually expect, and then some (bamboo toothbrush, natural toothpaste, ear plugs). You also have two handmade batik bathrobe/kimonos, sandals, and a blow dryer. My favorite part of staying in the farmhouse was having my tea on the porch couch in the mornings, watching the birds fly in and out of the rice fields. For my final night I moved into the Treehouse. This is without question, the most architecturally stunning space I have ever stayed in, in my life. There are many villa companies offering elevated bamboo stays in Bali, and I wasn’t sure how to differentiate between them. But when I saw the one at Stonehouse, I knew without a shadow of a doubt that I had made the right choice. Enter through the 360 degree swivel circular door, and you’re struck by the design of it all. It’s like being in a bamboo hive which swirls all around and overhead. It almost felt like being inside the natural curves of a seashell; all so unpredictable yet perfectly mathematical. Then there’s the view. The view! The Treehouse has a view of that same rice field that the Farmhouse looks out on, just at a different angle and elevation. Add in the copper tub on the porch and the net suspended on the edge over the babbling brook, and you’re in actual heaven on earth. The bed is a whimsical circular structure with bamboo arches stretching up and circling above, further emphasized by the of the walls. Then there’s the bathroom which is again, shocking in the best way. You have an indoor/outdoor shower that offers privacy by way of curtains and bamboo walls up to neck height, and a narrowing bamboo tunnel on the other side of the sink leading to the toilet. There is no door to the bathroom in case this is important to couples traveling together. You can find all the same amenities as Farmhouse here, so you will want for nothing. One difference to note: due to the open-air layout, the air conditioning does not circulate through the entire room. It is cleverly pumped through funnels built into the headboard, which is a structurally astounding feat. When you have the curtains drawn around the bed, you will be perfectly cold in bed (and I run very warm). This is also a good time to mention that there are indeed bugs and lizards present in the spaces of Stone House! It did not detract at all from my stay, and you adapt very quickly. I did not see anything beyond mosquitos, ants, moths, and geckos, even though I visited during the rainy season. The curtains keep you protected in bed, and the rooms have bottles of natural bug spray that packs a punch. If that isn’t enough, they even equip each room with electric racket zappers, which I discovered is a highly effective method of bug elimination. Zooming in even further: the experience. This includes the staff, meals, and unexpected extras. The most important part of this entire stay by far was the Stone House team. I feel so lucky to have been surrounded by such kind human beings for the week and it would not have been the same without them. Anything you need, they will happily arrange it. Flower baths, a driver to town, an in-room massage, dinner cooked just for you; you name it, you’ve got it. Plus, they put you in a What’s App chat group upon check-in, which allows for consistent and readily available communication. The meals that I had were some of the best of my entire trip. I had one dinner served in the great room, which was essentially like a private chef experience. The ingredients are bought fresh from the market every day, so in the morning you just select what you want off the menu for that night. There are so many options prepared with delicious Indonesian flavors, and they will customize it to suit your needs (I am a vegetarian and I could eat many dishes on the menu). I had another dinner served on the table in the treehouse, so I could enjoy my meal while staring out at the fields and watching the sun set. Unexpected extras! Everyone loves a surprise, and this was where Stone House really hit it out of the park. Upon entrance you are given a fresh coconut to enjoy while you check-in. They also offer complimentary coconut water served cold in a pitcher with breakfast and dinner. This was such a nice treat especially considering the natural dehydration that occurs in such a warm environment. A fresh fruit plate is replenished in your room daily, featuring local fruits like mangosteen, snakeskin fruit, and passion fruit. My favorite surprise of all? Bedtime cookies! Each night they would bring a wooden tray with a frangipani flower, a literary quote related to sleep, and a jar of two cookies. Each night there was a different flavor. What could be better than that? All of this goes to say; Stone House is an extremely special place. I will never forget the kind souls that greeted me every morning with smiles on their faces. I hope to one day bring my mom here, because this is the kind of happiness that should be shared with loved ones. I will forever be grateful for my time in this Eden, which managed to feel just like home when I was halfway across the world. I stumbled across Stone House while researching boutique hotels in Ubud. What a find! When I arrived and stepped into the property off the street, I felt like I found a secret oasis. You would never think this beautiful oasis is tucked away behind the big wooden doors. Less than 10 minutes from the center of Ubud, but you feel like you are far, far away amongst the lush garden, tall trees, and gurgling fish ponds. I had such a nice time that I ended up extending my stay. First I stayed in Farmhouse and then moved to downstairs Sky View. They are all so different, each filled with the owner's treasures found while traveling. No two rooms are alike, which gives this small hotel lots of character. Did I mention that the owner is a furniture designer? All the furniture is unique to this property and you don’t feel like it’s the typical hotel with cookie-cutter rooms. I think one of the best things about staying here is the staff. They are all so warm and friendly, they go out of their way to make you feel at home. I was traveling by myself and felt so comfortable staying there. A big thanks to the wonderful team at Stone House! I will be back one day.

As a travel writer, I have traveled the world multiple times and stayed at beautiful hotels all around the globe. But Stone House Ubud blew me away completely and totally. What a unique place. The energy. The architecture, the interior design. Everything about it I just instantly absolutely loved. This boutique haven, nestled within the vibrant heart of Ubud's jungle, is a hidden treasure that perfectly blends African and Asian influences and art, crafting an atmosphere of unparalleled sophistication and charm, with the best of those both worlds. Owned by the lovely American couple, Wendy and Walker, Stone House is a display of their discerning taste and commitment to creating a space that transcends the ordinary. The individually curated rooms showcase art and antiques, subtle stylish luxury, with attention to every little detail— a fusion of elegance with a funky touch of quirkiness, and most important ingredient: a whole lot of love. Already booked my next stay to come back, and can't wait. See you soon again stunning piece of paradise! <3

A superb place to stay in Ubud. We stayed in the Farm House room, which is the most secluded of the seven rooms, and we loved it. The small inn is the perfect size and provides a delightful retreat from the many activities in Ubud and the surrounding area. We had the excellent breakfast every day and one equally excellent dinner. Wendy and Erna and the staff go out of their way to make sure you have the best experience. They arranged all of our transportation, which made things so much easier. We look forward to our next visit!

We have traveled to 85 countries and stayed at many different hotels and Stonehouse is definitely one of our favorites! Wendy and Erna went above and beyond to make sure we got the most out of our visit! They anticipate your every need. They know Ubud intimately and all of their advice was spot on! Erna arranged wonderful tour guides and drivers during our stay and was also quick to arrange for last minute pickups! The rooms, location and staff are all first class. Stonehouse also has an amazing kitchen and breakfast was included with the room. You will not leave hungry. This is the only place we will ever stay in Ubud! Thanks for an amazing stay!
