It’s all about the View! Black Penny is perched on the side of a valley with spectacular views down to the river and rice paddies below. The reception / restaurant is located on the Top level and the villas cascade down the side of the valley with 2-3 villas on each level. Black Penny is not an option for anyone with disabilities.
As the name suggests the decor is very dark, based on the grey volcanic rock of Bali and the dark red hardwood. It is a style that works very well, and the villa’s ambiance matches the spectacular views of the lush tropical valley.
The furniture and lighting in our villa was very tasteful and the king bed was very comfortable. The sliding door in the bedroom opens up to a small deck, an infinity pool, and a SPECTACULAR garden framed view of the valley and river below. This is why you stay at Black Penny….the photos don’t lie!
Everything was clean, (but there were a few minor maintenance opportunities). The pool was crystal clear, the water was a tiny bit chilly at first, but very refreshing. The villa is a haven from the heat, and we spent the hottest part of the day lounging around our private pool enjoying the aircon.
It is tropical Bali. The doors don’t close properly, there are geckos, frogs and bugs, there is mould on the walls, the bathroom is outdoors….. this is all part of Bali’s relaxed casual beauty and charm. I wouldn’t change it for the world!
ALL the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful, and always met our requests with a smile. Breakfast was included in our rate, and served in the room if requested. The western breakfast was a little bland but passable. We only ate dinner once at the restaurant once, but it was nice and competitive price for a luxury villa.
Black Penny is a 10 minute (IDR60,000) taxi ride to/from Ubud Town centre and a Grab Taxi will be there within minutes, or sooner. We took the opportunity to walk in to Ubud one day visiting a number of Art Galleries on the way.
There are a number of very good and very cheap restaurants within a couple of minutes walk, try the BBQ Pork just up the road ….there are also a couple of Minimarts close by.
On the negative side, the “in villa” amenities could be improved. There are only come 2 small water bottles and sachet coffee with powdered creamer. It seems picky, but at this Top End price we felt the “low end motel” standard room amenities were a poor decision. Balinese coffee, a coffee plunger, and milk/cream would make a big difference. An opportunity for improvement!
Black Penny is a beautiful Ubud Balinese experience. Try it!

A truly relaxing villa! We stayed here for Christmas 2022 and we had a very peaceful and tranquil experience. The villa was beautiful: very comfortable, amazing views and private pool overlooking rice terraces and forest, large outdoor bathroom - we loved everything about the room. We recommend asking for Villa 9 or Villa 10 as these do not have any other villas below them and the view is of scenery only. Despite the hotel not organising any celebrations or special meal for Christmas Day celebrations, the staff were very accommodating and approachable. They helped us to book a scooter so that we couuld explore Ubud independently. We also booked a couples' massage (terapists came to the villa) which was INCREDIBLE and we would highly recommend. The villas were in a great location for us because they were far enough away from the crowds of central Ubud but also close enough to drive with a scooter. We would definitely stay here again.
Feedback for the hotel: 1) Offer the turn down service to guests and check they agree, don't just enter the room (assuming guests have left the room) and without notifying guests. 2) When guests apply the 'Do Not Disturb' sign on the villa door, don't call the room telephone. We used the laundry service and when they came to drop off the laundry they saw the 'Do Not Disturb' sign so they didn't knock, instead, they called the room phone. In our opinion, this did not respect the 'Do Not Disturb' sign. Despite the feedback above, we still thoroughly enjoyed out stay at the villas and we hope that the feedback will improve the experience of other guests in the future.

We stayed at river view villa, the view so amazing. From your private pool, you could see a beautiful valley with rice field and a river flowing naturally.
The breakfast was good, we ordered to be set up for a floating breakfast. The experience of having breakfast while soaking in the pool and seeing the stunning natural scenery is something worth to try. Another experience I recommend is the candle light dinner. The nuances of eating accompanied by candlelight under the shining stars, the sound of the river flowing, and the sound of the animals around are very reassuring. The 3 course dinner was also delicious

this is the coolest breakfast scene i've ever seen! Isn't it like a painting? especially when you wake up there is also a pond and green trees in Ubud, Bali! The villa staff was also very helpful when I arrived. The parking area is also quite spacious. The lobby has a stunning view! because the checkin desk was crowded, I checked in at this lounge. continue straight down the road to the villa. When you open the door, wow! the room is spacious and the view is even cooler than the photos on the internet! I'm so amazed! The bed is comfortable, there is a smartTV, a super large mirror, a wardrobe, a workdesk and a soft sofa. Semi-outdoor bathroom with toilet, shower, and bathtub in an elegant Balinese nuance. I ordered in villa dining, my best friend and I were satisfied with the dish. The next day, I woke up quite early because the morning atmosphere was too good to miss. The coolness of Ubud with this view. Lovely. Floating breakfast ready! I really enjoy it because the menu has a lot and everything is delicious! I'm not willing to check out, but I have to work. For sure I will come back to this villa again.

Been staying in Black Penny Villa and taking day use pool package idr 255net! Worth the price, nice accomodation, superclean, amazing pool with valley view even the food are delicious. The package is super worth it cz inclusion: 5 hours use for the room and pool, pizza banana crispy and softdrink. The staff was nice and friendly as well.. Hope to stay longer another time.. thanks for the hospitality

Black Penny Villas is THE BEST place to go in Ubud for couples especially on their honeymoon! We were warmly welcomed by their kind and very accommodating staff with their refreshingly delicious drinks, then ushered to our villas that has a breath taking view of Ubud’s rainforest. The afternoon tea time was a complementary to look forward to after a day’s adventure, it was reviving and paired with a sumptous snack. Indeed a worthwhile experience! Black Penny is truly a romantic, peaceful and relaxing place for couples to enjoy and celebrate love. Hoping to have a chance to comeback soon!

We arrived very late on a Saturday night, a driver was waiting for us at the airport, as we arrived to the villas a friendly greet us. The villas are very comfortable and private, there is a spa vive, our package included breakfast and we ate delicious meals every morning. Everyone was attentive and friendly. It really make us feel at home and we will definitely come back.

The staff was all very nice and easy ready to help at any minute. They helped us book our water rafting and helped answer any other questions we had. We were there for our honeymoon, so they really made it a special time with the honeymoon package that included romantic dinner, massages, cooking class and floating breakfast.

The villas are located on slope. There is no lift and only steps/stairs to each villa. Not recommend to bring big luggage. If to stay nearer to the river stream, need to prepare to walk a lot of stairs down. We stayed in villa no. 1 which is right below the recep lobby and it’s still peaceful and private.
Our villa comes with private pool which over look the greens. The pool is 1.4m deep.
Great view and peaceful place to stay in. Breakfast can be serve in the room or at the recep.
