with a good, unique and very traditional concept, this hotel is very comfortable for me, starting from the very beautiful views that this hotel has. During my 3 days at this hotel I was very satisfied with the service they provided. Very friendly staff, bill boy can bring items to the room, there are many menus in the restaurant, the service is also satisfying, quick to serve many guests, has a unique spa, namely entering a cave and providing satisfying service, and has a swimming pool which is quite spacious and aesthetic. I hope that next time I will be able to stay again at this hotel.

This is a review for my family’s stay at Hotel Tjampuhan in Ubud, Bali. My family spent one month at Tjampuhan Hotel this winter and my wife and I have been staying there during our trips to Bali for the last 10 years.

The magical ingredient in Bali is the Balinese themselves. They are an intensely nature connected and spiritual people and being in their presence you will feel their happiness and your own. The staff of Hotel Tjampuhan radiate this quality. The other magical aspect is the grounds of Hotel Tjampuhan, which are simply amazing, perched overlooking the edge of a several hundred foot deep jungle ravine complete with a river. On the terraced side of the ravine sit dozens of small houses each housing one hotel room or more. Included is the artist residence of Walter Spies, built in the late 1920’s for the famous painter and which will house 4 or possibly more people.

Two swimming pools are available to facilitate cooling off during the day while enjoying the jungle views and the call of the birds. One is a natural spring pool and uses a minimal amount of chlorine, the other is located near the underground spa and is more modern. We had breakfast at the restaurant buffet each morning and my wife and daughter and I absolutely loved it. We became friends with the staff over time and in particular Tri, a smiley and kind manager came to be quite close to our daughter. The restaurant makes a wonderful mix of traditional Balinese cuisine along with fresh fruits and more modern cuisine as well. I am a bit picky about my food and I was very happy to be enjoying our breakfast each day with the wonderful view out into the treetops above the ravine. We had a few special experiences during our stay. One of them was having the staff and entire restaurant sing happy birthday to our daughter who turned 7 during our stay. Our daughter was absolutely delighted with both the singing and with the chocolate brownie decorated with her name along with candles and she will hopefully end up having this as a lifetime memory. Another special experience was the temple ceremony. One of the days we dressed with a respectful ceremonial sarong around our legs and attended the ceremony at the medium sized temple on the hotel grounds. The regional king of Ubud attended and we were treated with kindness and welcomed to watch all parts of their ceremony. Afterwards, Gusti the general manager of the hotel, kindly invited us to a traditional buffet with everyone from the ceremony and we felt honored to be included. The next evening we walked to the far end of the hotel grounds to watch the festivities continue in the much larger temple located further down the river. When we got to the bridge Gusti was there. He graciously told us about the ceremony and a lot of the history of the hotel. While we were talking the son of the king came over the bridge and Gusti introduced us. Gusti again made us feel very welcome and clearly went out of his way to honor us as guests. We were very grateful to be treated so kindly and given a small view into their ceremony, dress and customs. It is true that the hotel was built close to a 100 years ago and some areas are as you might expect a little dated. I see that as part of the charm…and know I will be disappointed if I go seeking perfection. Gusti, also informed us that they are renovating some of the rooms and while we were there we watched a team refurbishing a good percentage of the stone paths as well as performing updates on some of the rooms. The hotel also has a wonderfully ornate spa that is built into a cave of sorts…with columns carved out with spirits and jungle animals that peer down on you while you alternate between the hot waters and plunging into an icy bath. My advice…come stay in the hotel and learn about it’s history and witness the beauty of the grounds, learn about the Balinese and how their spirituality makes them so unique and enjoy the genuine kindness of the wonderful staff at Hotel Tjampuhan.

I have been to this hotel to stay and go to the spa on numerous occasions. This visit was for 13 days and the longest I have stayed. The spa is down many stairs along the river. My room was far from the front but the view was incredible. This is an older hotel. The rooms are not perfect. The bathrooms are a bit run down, however, for the price you pay and the location it is excellent. I loved the Indonesian sweets at the breakfast buffet. The pastries at the breakfast could be improved. However, the spring pool and the main pool are fabulous. This hotel served my needs and would return,

The oldest hotel in Ubud has a nice layout of thatched villas and apartment style accommodation set in tropical gardens on the side of the verdant ridge across from Tjampuhan temple. It is one of the closest hotels to central Ubud so you can walk back and forth easily without having to get taxis or shuttle buses. The breakfast was really excellent in taste and selection and served on the open balcony area with nice views across the valley. The restaurant is at the same location. We did not eat there in the evening this time but did last time in 2019 and it was fine. We stayed 5 nights - a couple of days set aside for Ubud and immediate area (the start of the ridge walk is nearby leading up to the pretty rice field area), some days trips by car around north and north-west Bali, and a chill out day of spa/massage before moving on to Lombok. We had a few things to sort out and the room manager Gusti Dwipayana helped us a lot for things both inside the hotel and around and about on our visits. All in all we felt relaxed in the natural setting (which is nice after the Main Street in Ubud can feel a bit crazy at times) and had a good time.
