Detailed Reviews
I returned to Oneworld to do their 'Immerse Yourself in Bali' retreat lead by Wayan over the Christmas period. I had such a good time. Everything felt just perfect. The room, the resort, the food, the balance between doing and resting. It was all even more wonderful then I remembered it from last time (I did the 'escape the world' which was just lovely last time). Wayan is a really wonderful yoga and meditation instructor. It's not only the yoga though (although that's reason enough!), the Temple of Chi Sound bath was just amazing, the massages blissful, the Batik art class was fun and meditative at the same time, the volcano at sunrise was very special, and the fun and adventure of the bike ride back down the mountain. I learnt so much about Balinese culture and also received an amazing rest period that I sorely needed. I love the fact they make no fuss about it being Christmas, so you can just sail right through without any reminders of the Christmas chaos occurring back home! On the free day I used their free transport into Ubud and enjoyed shopping, the monkey forest and eating out. I also booked their additional 2 night tour after which was through Munduk, Booking it with Oneworld made it such an easy transition. Our driver Wayan (a different Wayan!), was so lovely to keep us company and look after us on the trip. I loved my whole stay there and am already thinking of my next one there. If you go, consider booking the extra night with a dinner at Bridges the night before. It's an amazing experience and such a nice way to settle right into your holiday.

Me and my wife attended the 'Immerse yourself in Bali' the whole experience was amazing.
Wayan and Desi are fantastic yoga teachers.
The location is perfect and relaxing, the food and staff are amazing.
The spa treatments were fantastic especially massage using the hot oils.
I reluctantly left after the week, but feeling very refreshed and relaxed.

I recently participated in the 'Escape the World' retreat at Oneworld Kumara and it was truly in a different class from other the retreat centres I have visited. The jungle setting is amazing and just walking into the retreat you start to feel relaxed by the beautiful tranquil surroundings. Yet you are not far from central Ubud and can stroll down into town in about 20 mins or the resort have a free shuttle.
The rooms are all wonderful and spacious with a lovely terrace and outdoor dining area for the day of silence. The rooms and the whole retreat have a very homely feel but the service is on a par with a 5* hotel. Every little detail has been thought about throughout the retreat. You get woken up in the morning and there is already lemon-ginger tea waiting on your terrace. Once the morning yoga session in the wonderful sala is complete your breakfast is already waiting for you. The addition of things such as watercolours and incense in the rooms really add to the immersive experience of the retreat.
The staff are so friendly and hard-working, there is no need to think about anything, just enjoy the wonderful experience. The food throughout the retreat is fantastic, all fresh, healthy, plentiful and most importantly delicious! They are also very good at catering to a whole range of dietary requirements. It's also a lovely touch that you are provided with most of the recipes to take home with you. Most people on the retreat, including myself, had travelled alone and it was fantastic to meet so many friendly, interesting and like-minded people to share conversations with over dinner.
The yoga sessions were expertly led by Iyan and assisted by Desy, who both have a wonderful energy. It is incredible how they are able to cater to such varied needs and abilities within the class whilst also keeping each session enjoyable and interesting. I felt so much stronger and more flexible by the end of week and am really missing going to the sala twice a day for those wonderful yoga classes.
The retreat also included some very special spiritual and cultural activities. The purification ritual was a real highlight as was the sunrise yoga overlooking the volcano. I thoroughly enjoyed the day of silence and found it a wonderful moment of self-discovery; the letting go ritual was also the perfect way to end the retreat.
Beyond all the wonderful yoga and activities I also spent many enjoyable moments in the resort spa. The treatments were very professional, of a high standard and represented really good value for money. In particular, I would recommend the Spa Mandi Treatment which culminated in the most beautiful flower bath. The spa also specialised in Ayurveda and having attended an Ayurvedic retreat in India I can confidently say that Oneworld provides an authentic experience.
Overall, Escape the World was a retreat that exceeded all my expectations and represented great value for money. If you are looking for a high quality holistic retreat with many genuine experiences and wonderful people then look no further! I will certainly be returning to Oneworld Kumara many times in the future.

Pros:
-close to Ubud
-spa and reception staff are gracious
Cons:
- saw a rat on the dining hall...gross
- LARGE cockroaches in my room - one even fell out of my closet as I was getting dressed...gross
- worst mattress I have ever slept on in my life - you can feel the metal springs (not very rejuvenating)
-not much menu choice; either eat what guests doing retreat are having or whatever is available that day...
- excursions which the hotel offers are charged at much higher rates than if you were to book them yourself
- hotel which I was sent to as an excursion had a terrible owner and terrible food (Nusa Lembongan)
- paid for a tour with OneWorld which I did not receive; was told by the owner "Claude" that this was because I didn't have enough money to shop (how would he or my driver know this??)
- hotel is currently expanding which takes away from charm of only having small number of rooms but is also quite noisey
- there is one pool lounger at this hotel in total; expect to lie on concrete
Apart from my personal frustrations with this hotel and select members of its management staff, I would put my bias aside and say its "ok". Do your research and don't believe everything you read on tripadvisor. There are a TON of lovely places to stay in Ubud which offer yoga retreats and/or spa lovely spa services. Please do not make my mistake and base your selection solely on the recommendations of trusted sites like tripadvisor.

I had the pleasure of attending a yoga retreat this May 2011. It was one of the best weeks of my life. For starters Kumara is beautiful. The moment you walk down towards the reception area you feel the magic. Everthing is green and lush with beautiful stone paths and stairways leading to the 10 or so rooms. The current constuction of another building was almost right beside our room and never were we bothered by any noise. Our room was perfect with a lovely view of the rice fields. We had a nice patio area with two big comfy chairs. My sister and I were early risers and we would sit out here while the sun came up sipping on fresh coffee. The beds were very comfortable as were the pillows (whew!), and they were made up fresh (and tight!) each day. The food was very very delicious and healthy and was always served with a smile. The yoga with Iyan and Wayan was a pleasure and I felt my abilities expanded well for the week. They also led us in some great day/night trips...we had many good laughs with them. The evening purification ritual was magical and will never be forgotten, as well as our last morning together...you will see, a real joy :)
Oh and the spa treatments were out of this world! I've never has such a physical (lots of yoga) yet pampered week...and I loved every moment of it. Oh and there is wireless internet here, but it is not always working well, but it's a holiday anyway and we didn't really mind.
It's true you can't believe everything you read on trip advisor, however when 99% say how wonderful a place is, the positive reviews speak for themselves. I would 100% return to Kumara and the Oneworld Retreat.

We stayed for 4 nights. In fact, as I write this review, I am still sitting at their patio 7.51am on Thursday.
Room is nice (albeit one visit by a giant cockroach that scared the heck out of me). Setting is nice -- all green and lush.
The only thing that tanked my review is at 6.30am today, the staff decided to spray pesticide around our room. They called o inform us last night, but I didn't think it would be THIS bad. Besides, what we were supposed to do? Leave the room? We closed our windows and still the toxic smell came in and I felt nauseated.
Question : why can't they do it in the afternoon or sometime that we can leave and go out? At 6.30am I don't think we could go anywhere.
One more thing : the yoga mats are cleaned once a week. No hanging to dry on the sun or at least wipe afte each use. To me, that's not very hygienic.

I unexpectedly went to Bali. What I mean by this, is that this country was not on my travel plans whilst I have been traveling SE Asia. Whilst exploring my travel options, Oneworld Retreat, Kumara Ubud, popped up in my consideration. There was a meditation retreat occurring, and I emailed, deciding if it was meant to be, there would be a space, and I received the positive news that one space was available.
And words can't adequately express what an amazing experience it was. For simplicity I will break it into the various categories, but I do need to state the whole is greater than the individual parts.
Accommodation: spacious, really big room with two desks for writing or even painting, since watercolour paints and paper are available. Bathroom is shower, toilet and wash basin area. Two big cupboards for storing clothes and safe. Outside of room on my patio was a day bed to sprawl and relax on, as well as table and chairs for gazing onto the rice paddies on the hillside. Incense sticks, and lighter are also provided. Rooms cleaned immacutely every day.
Food: delicious, tasty and wonderful. They accommodated to everyone's needs, be it gluten, lactose or whatever intolerance or allergy anyone had! And good substitutes were provided. Their coffee rocks!
Location: about a 20 fast walk from Ubud Palace, so close enough to do for enjoyment, or take the lazy route of having the retreat drop you off and fetch you. It's a service provided free of charge. You have the rice paddies around you and you can also walk to the river below on the property. There are two pools, one near the river which is the larger one, and another close to the eating area. One is also close to the rice paddy walk that can be done. Would recommend that you do this!
Wif: you can use the standalone computer at no cost in the little gift shop or you can simply log onto the wifi, with your own computer at no extra cost. Signal isn't very strong, but it works.
Staff: amazing, amazing people. They are so welcoming, friendly, accommodating and willing to assist and go the extra mile. They made this place from great to BRILLIANT.
Spa: Really experienced therapists and everyone did more than the program treatments since they were so good.
Retreat: in summary, beyond expectations, truly impactful, and soul reaching. Words can't say thank you enough to Margo, Wayan and Robert. A benefit of this retreat, is you gain an insight into the culture of the Balinese. The staff also share their own knowledge, so you can understand more.
A truly magical place, with amazing energy, people. If you want a truly relaxing, soul inspiring adventure for your heart and soul, I urge you go.

I read the reviews and expected an amazing restorative experience, a surprise anniversary adventure for my partner and I. Sadly I was very disappointed. The room was fabulous, view spectacular and bathroom - wow. We arrived to see glowing people en route to the airport as the retreat finished the day prior.
I pictured sitting by the pool overlooking the river and eating all the food that was raved about on tripadvisor, between naps and spa treatments. Retreat... Not so much!
The pool was 'broken' green and out of use. It seems the staff mostly left with the end of the retreat, (first breakfast was great, then the last of the retreat people left... So did the chef). Lunches and dinners were only available during retreat time, so lunch and dinner involved the sometime 15+ min trip to ubud. All the back and forth was NOT relaxing. We ended up walking around town some after lunch as it seemed easier than heading back to the 'retreat' and then back to ubud an few hours later.
So, I would say it would be a great place if you could get food and if the pool was open... But without these key features and bit being able to actually 'retreat'... It felt like a bit of a ripoff.
The spa staff were fantastic, but the spa treatments are better at their 'spa botanica' also in ubud. Apart from that we didn't really interact with the skeleton staff and in Bali I think that is a sad as they are such lovely people.
Note: I have been going regularly to Bali for 30 years and have been to ubud 4 times in the last 14 months. So I guess I have a realistic perspective and expectations.

Response from ONEWORLDretreats, Manager at Oneworld Retreats
Responded 11 Nov 2010
I am truly sorry and wish to ask for an apology! I totally understand your feelings and what happened to your experience was not our intention. The title of your message is so right! We will end the year with 45 retreats, and I suppose to come for a weekend would be disappointing after reading our retreat reviews. We have been planning to put together a menu for non retreat guests and this will soon happen, hopefully making a difference in the experience. I am glad you are enjoying our Bali Botanica Day Spa in Ubud, the therapists are all trained by the same trainers, there should not be too much difference in the quality of the treatments, but it is possible. As for the pool, it was a nightmare for us for more than one month that is how long it took to find the problem and fix it; it is now done and beautiful again. Glad we had a spare pool at the top of the hill! I feel bad that you had the feeling to get ripped off, if you are getting a copy of this message, send me an email (see Oneworld Retreats website) and contact me from there and I will make sure you get a nice treatment next time you are in Bali. Best from Bali, Claude, On behalf of The Team

Many people come to Ubud to "find themselves." I just came to find a good hotel at a moderate price point. If you are going to the hotel for a yoga retreat you do not need to read on as based on the journals in each room people seem to be having transcendant experiences and greet other guests with "Welcome to Paradise." The hotel looks beautiful with an enviable position cascading down to a river. HOWEVER, for me, this hotel is in dire need of a renovation. The rooms are large and well appointed but Mother Nature is taking over and winning. I found the rooms damp and smelling of it. The walls are stained, the closets need a paint job, everything felt old and tatty. Although most of the staff was nice I found some of the staff had a bad attitude which I have never found in any hotel in Bali and I have been there many times. Until the renovation happens I know you can find a much better value hotel elsewhere but if you are there for the retreats you probably will be levitating and won't notice anyway!!! Lastly, this hotel reminded me of the house in the film Sunset Boulevard which had suffered years of neglect as Nature was winning. I kept thinking I would see Gloria Swanson descend the stairs to the pool but in this case she porobably would be speaking with an Australian accent!!!

I picked up this place online as I was looking for a destination far away from home and close to nature. I had no idea what I was in for. Starting from the first step into the resort and until I left the place, my jaw kept dropping as I discovered this place. I was attending deepening the yoga practice retreat. Janet and wayan our retreat leader and yoga teachers made us experience heaven on earth. The place has magnificent energy that helps you draw closer to yourself and takes you away from the world. The retreat is designed very well and makes you experience the Balinese culture along with some great meditation locations. A personal yoga session is great to take the practice back home. The rooms are beautifully designed to help you relax. A bed in the verandah to enjoy nature and sounds. Food is great and it's quite a culinary journey throughout the retreat. Concept of raw food gives some surprising results. Yoga studio is right on the edge of cliff opening upto the jungle which makes it a great place. SPA-oh it's spectacular. I tried almost full menu. Ayurveda massage was included in our package and it was a great treat. Go in for male therapist they do a great job. Do not miss mandi treatment. I chose the flower bath. It's an amazing experience. You have a bathtub full of flowers in open paddy fields which makes you escape this world for sometime. There is nothing that can replace such pampering to your body. You find peace everywhere here and feel light. The staff here pampered me everyday. I felt so much at home. I never locked my room door during this whole weak. This place is really safe and becomes another home. I am leaving this place relaxed and feeling better while leaving than when I arrived. Just go for it.

Hi Celine ...
I was in December ...
sorry for my late answer
I hope you have an answer ..
Did you go to ubud in march ?
It was an amazing trip for me
🙏🏻
Hi Jessica,
