After nearly four decades Poppies is still being discovered by those wishing to escape the glitz and glamour of grandiose hotels while expecting comfortable clean surroundings, friendly service, and Balinese charm. Spacious individual thatched cottages filled with collectors' antiques, Indonesian fabrics and a host of creature comforts nestle in beautifully kept gardens with ponds, waterfalls, towering coconut palms, and a stunning swimming pool built among rocks and sunbathing terraces, overhung with riotous bougainvillea.

After an extended family holiday in Bali, I finished the trip by treating myself to a couple of nights, solo, in this beautiful boutique property. I wish it had been longer. It was heavenly. Whilst being one of the oldest, original hotels in the area, it has retained all its charm and hospitality that Poppies is renowned for. The staff were absolutely charming and helpful. The gardens are lush and well maintained, the ambiance is tranquil. The pool is not large but was never crowded. The layout of the cottages are cleverly designed so that they all ensure privacy. The rooms themselves were quaint and thoughtfully appointed..Bar fridge, sound system, TV, safe, desk, hanging space and drawers, hairdryer, kettle. Huge outdoor bathroom with shower and bath recess to step into. It’s covered in netting to protect from bugs/insects. The aircon was sufficient with added ceiling fan but not icy cold. The roof is thatched and therefore has a certain straw smell which didn’t bother me at all but worth mentioning for others to consider. Breakfast was a la carte selection and beautifully presented, delivered to cottage patio or you can dine across the laneway at Poppies Restaurant, also delightful. For late departures, there are small change rooms available with shower/toilet facilities to freshen up before heading to the airport. Added bonus is free airport transfer. I would suggest that this place is ideal for couples or solo travellers wanting to enjoy the serenity, to relax and unwind. I can’t wait to go back again.

We liked everything about Poppies Bali and enjoyed our stay there very much. This is like a secret garden set behind a stone wall in the midst of Kuta chaos, yet totally away from it all. The very clean, comfortable Dutch-colonial-Bali style cottages are scattered about the garden to insure total privacy and quiet. I can only endorse all of the positive comments made in others reviews, and we experienced none of the negatives. The breakfast was remarkable, you can dine in the restaurant (fixed menu) or on your terrace, at the time you pick the food will magically appear. The location is in the heart of Kuta on a lane so narrow that in one direction only motorcycles and walkers can pass. The other direction is passable for cars and vans but very tricky. Most taxis will not drive to the hotel. Some people consider the difficult location a negative, to me it just added to the charm, like discovering a hidden treasure. To hail a taxi walk the short distance to Legian. There are many cabs that pass, use Bluebird or Ngur Rai (meter). There are many good restaurants and shopping within easy walking distance, including the hotel's Poppies restaurant. The hotel is only a few hundred meters from Kuta beach. The room rates are reasonable for the incredible experience. Communication prior to travel was excellent. For touring its more cost efficient for you to prearrange your own driver/van from outside.

A wonderful memory-lane trip to Kuta was based on this charming hotel with its delightfully old-fashioned service. This is not the five-star hermetically sealed westernised environment that many hotels in south Bali strive to provide, but something rather more in tune with the indigenous heritage of the island and the hotel's establishment in the 70s. The cottages are spacious and comfortable (and the slight smell of hay and the occasional mosquito that ignores the various repellents enhance the character of the rooms), whilst the equally spacious and well equipped bathrooms, with their open to the skies gardens, are all that one could need. Breakfasting on one's private verandah is a lovely way to start the day and the restaurant across the 'gang' offers an alternative, as well as for other meals and a bar. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff ... even loaning me bathroom scales to enable me to check the weight of my necessarily repacked hold luggage! Their friendly but courteous politeness was quite charming. A couple of tips: cottage 27 is in a private and quiet location (even allowing a cat to cautiously creep in and pinch unwanted warm milk from a finished breakfast!); and, book direct on Poppies own website to get a reasonable price but including the breakfasts and transport from and to the airport., all of which may be extra if the accommodation is booked through the discount sites.

We are all more than grateful for such an apt appraisal of what we have long aspired to offer our guests - a little bit of the Bali that was so much more prevalent in Kuta when the Poppies story began almost 50 years ago, and that we feel more than ever is so well worth preserving and showcasing.

We recently stayed at Poppies for 8 nights and had breakfast included in the stay. This was my first trip to Bali and it more than met my expectations! Poppies is stunningly gorgeous and feels like you are in the middle of paradise! It has a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere which is just what my partner and I needed. Attention to detail is exceptional, down to the evening ritual of staff replacing and lighting the mozzie coil on your veranda and giving you new strips for the plug in mozzie repellents in the rooms. Staff were extremely friendly, polite and welcoming. Sitting around the pool each day was the most relaxed we have felt in a long long time and there is no noise from outside the resort, unlike some of the other busier hotels we noted along Kuta and Seminyak. Poppies is perfectly situated in the heart of Kuta with all the liveliness that Kuta offers. We will certainly be spreading the word with our friends about Poppies - an absolute Bali treasure. Thank you so so much! Arls and Baz

Thank you Arls and Baz for such fantastic words of praise. Thank you for pointing out to the world at large the reasons why Poppies is the perfect place to stay in all of Kuta, and by implication perhaps, in all of Bali! Hope to welcome you back soon.

We are back from a 12-day trip to Bali. We spent it in Poppies Hotel, Cottage No. 20. It is a wonderful, very quiet complex right in the middle of busy Kuta. We had already asked the travel agent to be given one of the cottages at the back, as we had read that you could hear less of the street noise there. The hotel complied with this request. Thank you for that. The complex is beautifully laid out, you feel like you are in a little paradise. The gardeners do a really great job here. The pool area is also very beautifully laid out. There are only a few loungers available, but there were always enough for the number of guests who wanted to use the pool. Unfortunately, the pool staff showed little to no interest in taking orders for drinks or meals from guests. Guests had to go looking for something they wanted. The rooms were cleaned well every day and the towels were also changed daily. The air conditioning is a bigger problem, as it is aimed directly at the bed. My husband had a cold on the third day and unfortunately the cold didn't go away for the rest of his vacation. Another positive thing to mention is that you get two bananas per person every day. These are put on the table in front of the cottage before you get up in the morning. Now to why we have to deduct a point. Unfortunately, the breakfast is very monotonous and it is a bit borderline how limited you are in this hotel. To explain: There are 5 different categories when ordering and everyone can only choose one item from this category. This means that if you order toast, you don't get a croissant, or if you order an omelette, you don't get bacon or sausage, or if you order muesli, you don't get fruit salad. For this reason, we had to share the portions every day. We also contacted our tour guide about this. But unfortunately the hotel management is not prepared to compromise here. They actually believe that they have to educate their guests. The whole thing gave our vacation in this hotel a negative touch. We would recommend the hotel but would definitely not book it with breakfast. There are so many restaurants nearby that you have plenty of options for a decent breakfast.

My wife and I stayed at Poppies for 3 nights at the beginning of our holiday. We'd enjoyed a great evening at Poppies restaurant in 2016, so decided to return and stay at the hotel too, which looked like an ideal place to relax and unwind. Free pick up from the airport was great, our driver was on time and very friendly. If, like us, you are turned off by big resorts with generic rooms and loads of people hogging sun loungers and lining up for the buffet breakfast, then Poppies is the place for you. This hotel has the 'special character' that I crave. As others have said, the small resort is very well designed and set in beautiful grounds. We asked for a room near the pool and were given cottage 12 which was perfect, with it's own private access to the wonderful pool. The pool itself is just so lovely, 2.5 meters deep at one end and with little nooks to relax in and private areas for lounging. Despite being one of the oldest hotels in Kuta, the cottages are very well appointed, packed with charm and character, and as fresh and smart as the day they were built. The a-la-carte breakfast was very generous and a great selection, you choose 1 item from 5 categories, and they are all cooked to order. I'll give special mention to the freshly squeezed orange juice (from those unique green oranges I've only ever encountered in Bali) and to the delicious black rice pudding and the Nasi Goreng. We enjoyed breakfast over at Poppies Restaurant and on the last morning had it delivered to our room, as we were leaving early. The staff are all very friendly and the place is well run by people who are clearly proud of the service they provide. Poppies was the cheapest of the four places we stayed on this trip (Kuta, Ubud, Nusa Lembongan and Sanur) but it was also arguably the best. Best suited to couples looking for something low-key but stylish, we wish we had stayed longer at Poppies and can't wait to return.

We 3 people stayed at the Poppies Hotel at the end of August. At first the Kuta area was a bit of a culture shock. It was a lot of traffic, but as soon as we entered the Poppies, we thought we were in paradise. All beautifully landscaped and the small cottages quite enchanting. We found the service and staff very nice and have always tried to meet our wishes. We always had breakfast with us and twice we had two trips where we had to leave before breakfast. We then got nice packed lunches and I also asked if we could have 6 bananas, which was done at no additional fee. Also the small pool is very nicely landscaped. The prices are also great, we stayed afterwards in two other hotels with 5 stars, which were very expensive in terms of cocktails, drinks and food. In the Poppies restaurant and pool bar, the prices were very good. We would book the Poppies again anytime

Excellent value for money. By notifying in advance the hotel came to pick us up free of charge from the airport, driving time 20 minutes with traffic.
The welcome is warm, the swimming pool area very pleasant and calm. The receptionist will be happy to help you organize your trips in no time.
The room is pleasant with the shower area outside. Comfortable bed and impeccable cleanliness.
Very good restaurant, high price range for Bali but quality too.
Well done Poppies.

We arrived at Poppies last night. From airport pick up to hotel reception and room transfer, the service has been astoundingly friendly. Welcome cocktails and luggage transfer, plus pay at checkout, a warm reception. Upon entering the tatched roof hut, the room was cool and air conditioned. Having (straw? coconut?) roof, the hut does smell quite distinct, which we personally love. The outdoor garden bathroom is very spacious with insect screens installed on the roof.
Birds are singing in the morning. The garden and pool are very beautiful.
We can't wait to explore more of Poppies.

I have been staying at Poppies for more than a decade and love waking up each morning and being able to sit on the porch in my own private garden. Being a small property you are able to get to know the welcoming and friendly staff and feel part of the Poppies family. The pool is in a quiet, tropical setting and lacks the coldness of the pools in large resorts. Pool beds offer privacy and are thoughtfully arranged in groups of two/ three in the beautiful garden area. Cottages are spacious, perfect for one, two or a third can be accommodated. I love leaving the hustle and bustle of the Kuta streets, markets and street stalls and escaping into this serene piece of paradise. The well known Poppies restaurant is 20 metres down the lane, set in tropical gardens. I have eaten here for almost four decades. Prices are reasonable and the menu offers a range of cuisines, although I prefer to choose traditional Indonesian dishes. Poppies is a 10 minute walk down the lane to the beach, to enjoy walking, swimming or admiring the beautiful Bali sunsets. I love my holidays in Poppies, coming home relaxed after a peaceful getaway.

Never cold, but always refreshing. We have made it our habit to end every trip to Bali with a stay at Poppies. We don't like Kuta, but Poppies gives you immediate access to all the Kuta shopping , pubs and restaurants without compromising the quality of your stay.
There are more places to choose from in the Kuta area.
